OnFriday12January2018,IdecidedtobravetheweatherandtakeatripdowntoAnnottoBayfrom Castleton.
Wehadbeenhavingseeminglynon-stoprainsandattimesstormyconditionsforaboutaweeknow.Nightsfoundmewearing
socks,bonnetandevenascarf!Watchingtherainsoakrightthroughmyconcretewallsandroofandtakingintoaccountthe
reportsIhadgottenbothfrom establishednewssourcesaswellasfromtravelersleftmewonderingifthiswasreallytheend
oftheJunction.

Takingmy‘house’anland’umbrellawiththehopethatitcouldindeedholdupagainstthelashingrain,Igingerlydescendedthe
slopeonwhichIlive,side-steppingthenumerousstreamsthattookoverthepath.Arrivingatthemainroadonmyfeetinsteadof
onmybutt,Igavethanks.IwasfortunateenoughtonothavetocrosstheWagWaterRivertogettotransportationbutsadly,this
isnotthestoryformany.Icrossedtheroadandlookeddownatthechurningchocolateyragingriverwhichflowsfrom thegreat
BlueMountains.Man,wassheangry!Ilookedfurtherdownriverandshookmyheadinsorrow,thinkingoftheforgottenpeopleof
Chesterfield.
Thefootbridgewhichwascommencedbyresidentshopingtolinkthecommunityof
ChesterfieldtotheJunctionmainroadisyettobecompleted,leavingthem towalk
formilestosafelycrosstheragingWagWaterriverorundress,riskselfandproperty
tocrossatvariouspoints.

LabourPartyAndrewHolnesspromisedcitizens...abridgeintheircommunity,
followinghisbarefootedwalkacrosstheWagWaterRiverinsearchofvotesfor

whothencontinuedbysayingthat“theJunctionRoadselecteditselfforrepairasthestateoftheroaddeservesattention;the
Governmentiscommittedtoinfrastructuredevelopmentandimprovingconnectivityamongmajorhubsinthecountry”.

thepowerofthevoteisimportantandnotthepeoplethemselves.

TheextremelyheavyrainsthathavebatteredSouthEastSt.Marysincethestartof2018haveresultedinevenmoredeplorable
roadandlivingconditionsalongtheintegralJunctionroute,especiallyintheGeorgia/Anchovyareawheretheroadhasbeen
brokenand deeplysunkenfrom aseriesofheavyrainsoccurredinlate2016.Asthebusscrapedandrockedthroughthisarea,
mymouthdroppedwideopen.Theroadhadsunkdownatleastagood4feetinsomeplaces.Somelowvehicleswereforcedto
regurgitatetheirpassengersintherain,descendintothebowlanddragthemselvesupontheothersidebeforegobblingthem up
again.

ThoughthepollsshowedamajorityvotingfortheJamaicaLabourPartyintheOctober2017by-elections,it’sthewordsofthe
People'sNationalPartycaretakerforSouthEastStMary,DrShaneAlexis,thatnowreflectthepleaoftheinhabitantsofthearea:
“TheJunctionmainroad...hadseverallandslidesand"waterfalls"from thehillsides,resultinginmoredamagetoastrategic
corridorforstudents,farmersandbusinesses.Beforetheincreasedrainfall(it)posedahazardtopublicsafety&nowevenmore

Jamaica’sfourteenparishesaregroupedintothreecounties.TheparishesofKingston,St.Andrew,PortlandandSt.Thomasarein
Surrey:St.Mary,St.Ann,Manchester,ClarendonandSt.CatherineareinMiddlesex;Hanover,St.James,Trelawny,St.Elizabeth
andWestmorelandareinCornwall.
TheJunctionrouteliesmostlyinSt.Mary,aparishthathasalandAreaof611.3sqkm(236.0sqmi)andapopulationof114,227.
ThecapitalofSt.MaryisPortMaria.St.MaryisborderedbyPortlandintheEast,St.AnnintheWest,andpartsofSt.Catherine
andSt.AndrewintheSouth.Itismostlymountainous,risinguptoalmost4000feetatthehighestpointwithjustunder13per
centofitsareahavingslopesbelow10degrees.Therearethree(3)mainriversinSt.Mary:theRioNuevoRiver,WagWaterand
WhiteRivers.Theseriversareoftenslow,andattimescreateswampsinthesurroundingarea.

St.MaryiswellknownforbeingoneofthefirstsectionsoftheislandtobeoccupiedbytheSpaniards.In1655,aftertheEnglish
capturedJamaicafromtheSpanish,theareaaroundthetownofPuertoSantaMariabecameknownasSt.Mary.PortMaria,the
currentcapitaloftheparishwasthesecondtownbuiltbytheSpaniardsontheisland.Today,thisparishincludestheformerparish
ofMetcalfeandpartoftheformerparishofSt.George.Numerousnationalmonumentsstillstandintheparishsuchasthetownof
RioNuevowhichholdshistoricalsignificanceforbeingthesiteofthelastbattlebetweentheinvadingEnglishandthedefending
SpaniardswhoeventuallyhadtofleetoCuba.

In1760,themostseriousrebellioninJamaica’shistorybrokeoutaroundPortMaria,eventuallyspreadingtoalmosttheentire
island.TheleaderofthisrebellionwasaCoromanteeslavecalledTacky,whobelongedtotheFrontierEstate.FortHaldane,now
GraysCharity,wasseizedandammunitiontaken.Therebelsthenmovedinland.Manywhiteswerekilled.

AfterEmancipation,freevillageswereformedinSt.Marybuttheparishstillbasicallyremainedonewithbigestates.Atthebegin-
ningofthe19thcenturytherewere63sugarfactoriesintheparishbutbytheendofthecenturyonlythreeexisted.

Withthedeclineofsugar,bananacultivationtookitsplace.Inthelate1930s,St.Maryplayedaprominentroleinthecreationof
JamaicaProducer’sAssociationwhichwassetuptopreventthecontinuationofthemonopolyonbananasheldbytheUnitedFruit
Companyandotherpurchasingorganisations.UndertheumbrellaoftheAssociation,theJamaicabananagrowersbandedtogether
toshipandmarkettheirownproduce.

Maintowns
PortMaria,thecapitaloftheparish,ishometoseveralbuildingswhichsurvivedfromPortMaria’sgoldendaysofbeingabusyport,
suchastheStMaryParishChurchandtheoldcourthouse.

OracabessaislocatedwestofPortMariaonthemainroadleadingtotheneighbouringparishofSt.Ann.ThenameOracabessais
thoughttohavebeenderivedfromtheSpanish‘orodecabeza’meaningGoldenHead.Oracabessaisafarmingtown.

AnnottoBayisaseacoasttownonthewesternsideofthemouthoftheWagWaterRiver,oneofSt.Mary’smanyrivers.Inits
heyday,AnnottoBayboastedarichsugarestate,GraysInn,butthissugarfactorynolongerfunctionssincebananahasreplaced
sugarasthemaincrop.Therustingsmokestacksthatoncebillowedforthlifeonthisestatenowstandidle.

from December’sfestivitiesandwipetheslateclean.Wesaywe’llexercisemore,eatmorevegetables,
stopdrinkingsoda,maybeevengetsomemoresleep.Wemaywritethem downorevenbetter,post
them tosocialmedia!YetsomewherebetweenFebruaryandMarchwefindourselvesfloundering.
Infact,researchhasitthatabout80% ofuswillfailbythesecondweekofFebruary.

Butdon’tletthatdiscourageyou,thisiswheretheskillsofaHealthPsychologistplayacriticalrole.
Yes,healthpsychologyisanotherareaofspecializationinpsychology.
Healthpsychologyspecificallylooksathow biological,psychologicalandsocialfactorsimpactour
healthhabitsandhow wehandleillness.
HealthpsychologistsstudybehaviourssuchaswhywehittheSNOOZEbuttoninsteadofwakingup
andgettingsomeexercise.Theyalsostudyfactorslikefinances,personalbeliefsandaccessibility
tohealthcaretobetterunderstandandhelpindividualslivehealthierlives.

Domesticviolenceisnotamaritalissue;itisaCRIMEandmustbetreatedassuch.
IfIwentuptoacompletestrangerandpunchedtheminthenose,Iwouldbearrestedandchargedtothefullextentof

thelaw.Yetvictimsofabuseareshamedandtoldtosweepitundertherugtoavoidfurtherembarrassment.
Theysuffertwiceover,withnolightattheendoftheirdarktunnel.

Andevenafterfinallymanagingtodragthemselvesawayfromtheneglect,theverbalabuse,thephysicalabuse,thesexualabuse,
thereproductivecoercion,thepsychologicalabuse,manywomen-likemyself-stillendureeconomicabusefromthesameabuser.

Fathersrefusetomaintainthechild(ren)orcontributeverylittle;someevengoasfarasdamagingthewoman’semployment
prospectsviaslanderingofcharacter,forcingthewomentobecome/remainunemployed,sotheyhavetousetheirlastresources

andthuscanneverbecometrulyindependentorbetterthemselves.

Goingfrom ‘tweentoteenisquiteaninterestingtime.Thisperiodislabelledas’puberty’.
Pubertyistypicallyviewedasaveryhardtime,bothforthoselivingitaswellasforparents
whohavedifficultiesexplainingit.However,thisdoesn’thavetobethecaseandthemost
canbemadeofthesemoments,resultingincloserparent-childrelationshipsaswellasabetter
graspofScienceonthewhole.

Everyone’sexperienceofpubertyisunique.Forsomeitbeginsatasyoungastheageof8;
otherswaittileventheageof16yearstobegin.Despitethis,theendresultisthesame:
transitioningfrom beingachildtobeinganadult.Yourbodychanges;yourfeelingsandpers-
pectiveschange;yourrelationshipswiththosearoundyouchange.
AwholelothappensthatmanypersonsFEARorareembarrassedabout.Sadly,infearingand
inbeingself-conscious,theymissoutontheFUN oflearningBiologyfirsthand!

Wealldon’tmindspeakingoftheeggtothelarvatothepupatothebutterfly...
