3.6.5 Population Characteristics: According to Population and Housing Census 2011, the total
population of the upazila is 222376 of which 110663 are males and 111713 are females. The sex ratio
of the upazila is 99 which has remarkably decreased in 2011 as against 104 in 2001.
• Growth Rate: The decadal population growth rate for the upazila is 13.71% and the annual
compound growth rate is 1.27%. The decadal growth rates over the last half-century are
shown in table 6.1.

• Literacy: In Kahaloo Upazila, it is found that 52.1% populations aged 7 years and over are

Table 6.2 shows that the literacy rate of Kahaloo Upazila in 2011 is 52.1% for both sex,
54.9% for male and 49.2% for female. It shows an increase of 4.2, 1.7 and 6.8 percent point
in 2011 over 2001 for both sex, male and female respectively. In the upazila, the literacy is
the highest i.e. 88.5% in Ward No. 04 of Kahloo Paurashava and the lowest i.e. 43.9% in
Paikar Union.

3.7.1 Background: Nandigram Upazila came into existence as a thana in 1932 following elevation
of it from a police outpost set up there much earlier when it was originally a part of Singra Upazila in
Natore Zila. It was upgraded to a upazila in 1983. Nothing is definitely known about the origin of the
upazila name. It is said that during the reign of Raja Dashrat, the king of Ajaddya, Nandini, the
brother of second queen of Raja, lived in the place of present upazila headquarters. It is generally
believed that the upazila name has come as an onomastic transformation from the name Nandini.
3.7.2 Area and Location: The upazila occupies an area of 265.22 sq. km.. It is located between
24°35' and 24°48' north latitudes and between 89°08' and 89°21' east longitudes. It is bounded on the
north by Kahaloo Upazila and Sajahanpur Upazila and east by Sherpur Upazila. On other flank,
Singra Upazila of Natore Zila boarders its south and Raninagar Upazila of Naogaon Zila and
Adamdighi Upazila surround its west.
3.7.3 Administrative/Geographic Unit: The upazila consists of 1 paurashava, 9 wards, 22
mahallas, 5 unions, 221 populated mauzas and 228 villages. The average size of population of each
ward and mahalla are 2055 and 841 respectively. On the other hand, the average size of population
of each union, mauza and village are 32461, 734, and 712 respectively.
3.7.4 Housing and Household Characteristics: In the upazila, there are 45853 households.
Distribution of household by type shows that there are 99.84% general unit, 0.07% institutional and
0.09% other unit.
• Household Size: The average household size (General) for the upazila is 3.9 persons, for
rural area the size is also 3.9 and for urban area the size is slightly higher i.e. 4.0.
• Type of Housing Structure: In the upazila, 2.6% general households live in pucca house,
8.2% in semi-pucca house, 86.9% in kutcha house and the remaining 2.3% live in jhupri
which is shown in a pie-chart in figure 7.1.

• Source of Drinking Water: In Nandigram Upazila, 97.5% general households get the facility
of drinking water from tube-well, 0.8% from tap and the remaining 1.7% household get water
from other sources.
• Sanitation: In the upazila, 67.6% general households use sanitary latrine, 22.7% non-
sanitary latrine and the remaining 9.7% have no toilet facility.
• Access to Electricity: All the 5 unions of the upazila have brought under the Rural
Electrification Program. However, a total of 45.2% general households reported to have
electricity connection in the entire upazila in 2011 as against 23.2% in 2001.

51.7 for male and 43.4% for female. It shows an increase of 5.3, 3.3 and 7.7 percent point in
2011 over 2001 for both sex, male and female respectively. In the upazila, the literacy is the
highest i.e. 70.2% in Ward No. 09 of Nandigram Paurashava and the lowest i.e. 36.5% in
Ward No 02 of the same Paurashava .

3.8.1 Background: Sariakandi, the biggest upazila of Bogra Zila in respect of area came into
existence as a thana on March 20, 1886 and upgraded to upazila in 1984. Long before that the thana,
name was Naukhila. Once a fateful land erosion caused the thana precincts and surroundings to
disappear in river Bangali. Thereafter, the thana was moved to Sariakandi village and became known
by the name of this village. It is generally believed that the upazila might have derived its name from
the name of the village where its headquarters is located.
3.8.2 Area and location: The upazila occupies an area of 408.50 sq. km.. including 2.10 sq km.
forest area. It is located between 24°44' and 25°04' north latitudes and 89°31' and 88°45' east
longitudes. It is bounded on the north by Saghatta Upazila of Gaibandha Zila and Sonatala Upazila and
the east by Islampur Upazila, Madarganj Upazila and Sarishabari Upazila of Jamalpur Zila. On other
flank, Kazipur Upazila of Sirajganj Zila and Dhunat Upazila boarder its south and Gabtali Upazila and
Sonatola Upazila skirts its west.
3.8.3 Administrative/Geographic Unit: The upazila consists of 1 paurashava, 9 wards, 17
mahallas, 12 unions, 117 populated mauzas and 173 villages. The average size of population of each
ward and mahalla are 2060 and 1091 respectively. On the other hand, the average size of population
of each union, mauza and village are 21015, 2155 and 1458 respectively.
3.8.4 Housing and Household Characteristics: In the upazila, there are 75614 households.
Distribution of household by type shows that there are 99.86% general unit, .01% institutional and
0.13% other unit.
• Household Size: The average household size (General) for the upazila is 3.6 persons, for
both rural and urban areas the size is also same i.e. 3.6.
• Type of Housing Structure: In the upazila, 1.0% general households live in pucca house,
6.3% in semi-pucca house, 92.0% in kutcha house and the remaining 0.7% live in jhupri
which is shown in a pie-chart in figure 8.1.

3.9.1 Background: Shajahanpur Upazila came into existence on 3 June 2002. Before in caption as
an independent upazila it was a part it of Bogra Sadar Upazila. It is said that during Mughal period
emperor Shahjahan sent some soldiers to build a check post for protecting the area from robbers. In
consequence of which the area became popularly known as Shahjahanpur. The upazila was
declared as Majhira Upazila in 3 June 2001. It was renamed as Shahjahanpur on 2 March 2005.
3.9.2 Area and location: This upazila occupies an area of 221.69 sq. km.. It is located between
24o41' and 24o50' north latitudes and between 89o16' and 89o30' east longitudes. It is bounded on the
north by Bogra Sadar Upazila, south by Sherpur Upazila and Nandigram Upazila, east by Gabtali
Upazila and Dhunat Upazila and west by Nandigram Upazila and Kahaloo Upazila.
3.9.3 Administrative/Geographic Unit: The upazila consists of 1 full and 2 (part) wards of Bogra
Paurashava and 16 mahallas, 9 unions, 120 populated mauzas and 166 villages. The average size of
population of each ward and mahalla are 16862 and 2810 respectively. On the other hand, the
average size of population of each union, mauza and village are 20697, 1897 and 1371 respectively.
3.9.4 Housing and Household Characteristics: In the upazila, there are 72685 households.
Distribution of household by type shows that there are 99.50% general unit, 0.15% institutional and
0.35% other unit.
• Household Size: The average household size (General) for the upazila is 3.9 persons, for
rural area the size is slightly lower i.e. 3.8 and for urban area the size is slightly higher i.e. 4.0.
• Type of Housing Structure: In the upazila, 7.5% general households live in pucca house,
26.7% in semi-pucca house, 64.3% in kutcha house and the remaining 1.5% live in jhupri

literacy rate for male is 60.5% and for female is 54.7%. In the upazila, the literacy rate is the
highest i.e. 65.8% in Aria Bazar Union and the lowest i.e. 43.7% in Gohail Union.

3.10.1 Background: Sherpur, the third largest upazila of Bogra Zila in respect of both area and
population, situated on the bank of the river Korotoya, came into existence as a thana on August 12,
1870 and upgraded to upazila in 1983. Nothing is definitely known about the origin of the upazila
name. However, Sherpur town is an ancient place of historical significance. It is said that during the
reign of Sher Shah, the then Pathan sultan of Delhi, a military camp was set up at Sherpur which
became well-kown thereafter. It is believed that the upazila might have derived its name from the
name of the place where its headquarters is located.
3.10.2 Area and Location: The upazila occupies an area of 295.93 sq. km.. It is located between
24º32' and 24º44'north latitudes and 89º20' and 89º32' east longitudes. It is bounded on the north by
Sajahanpur Upazila and east by Dhunat Upazila. On the other hand, Royganj Upazila and Tarash
Upazila of Sirajganj Zila are bounded south and Singra Upazila of Natore Zila and Nandigram Upazila
surround its west.
3.10.3 Administrative/Geographic Unit: The upazila consists of 1 paurashava, 9 wards, 19
mahallas, 10 unions, 223 populated mauzas and 322 villages. The average size of population of each
ward and mahalla are 2795 and 1324 respectively. On the other hand, the average size of population
of each union, mauza and village are 30767, 1380 and 956 respectively.
3.10.4 Housing and Household Characteristics: In the upazila, there are 81753 households.
Distribution of household by type shows that there are 99.86% general unit,, 0.03% institutional and
0.11% other unit.
• Household Size: The average household size (General) for the upazila is 4.1 persons, for
rural area the size is 4.0 and for urban area the size is slightly higher i.e. 4.4.
• Type of Housing Structure: In the upazila, 3.1% general households live in pucca house,
21.8% in semi-pucca house, 71.8% in kutcha house and the remaining 3.3% live in jhupri
which is shown in a pie-chart in figure 10.1.

• Source of Drinking Water: In Sherpur Upazila, 93.7% general households get the facility of
drinking water from tube-well, 3.8% from tap and the remaining 2.5% household get water
from other sources.
• Sanitation: In the upazila, 71.3% general households use sanitary latrine, 21.8% non-
sanitary latrine and the remaining 6.9% have no toilet facility.
• Access to Electricity: All the 10 unions of the upazila have brought under the Rural
Electrification Program. However, a total of 43.4% general households reported to have
electricity connection in the entire upazila in 2011 as against 19.8% in 2001.

3.10.5 Population Characteristics: According to Population and Housing Census 2011, the total
population of the upazila is 332825 of which 165527 are males and 167298 are females. The sex ratio
of the upazila is 99 in 2011 as against 103 in 2001.
• Growth Rate: The decadal population growth rate for the upazila is 16.25% and the annual
compound growth rate is 1.49%. The decadal growth rates over the last half-century are
shown in table 10.1.

• Literacy: In Sherpur Upazila, it is found that 44.1% population aged 7 years and over are

Table 10.2 shows that the literacy rate of Sherpur Upazila in 2011 is 44.1% for both sex,
47.9% for male and 40.2% for female. It shows an increase of 7.8, 6.4, and 9.2 percent point
in 2011 over 2001 for both sex, male and female respectively. In the upazila, the literacy is
the highest i.e. 90.5% in Ward No.08 of Sherpur Paurashava and the lowest i.e. 37.3% in
Bishalpur Union.

3.11.1 Background: Shibganj, the second largest upazila of Bogra Zila in respect of both area and
population came into existence as a thana from a police outpost and set up at Chandunia Bara Bazar
in 1897. It was upgraded to upazila in 1984. Nothing is definitely known about the origin of the upazila
name. It is said that Mohammad Khilze conquered Bengal in 12th century. At that time the people of
Hindu community kept nearly 360 idols of gods and goddesses for worship at the village Bhuraghat.
One big wooden idol of Lord Shiva was brought to Chandunia Bara Bazar for worship. Subsequently
the name of the place changed as Shibganj. It is believed that the upazila might have derived its
name from the name of the place where its headquarters is located.
3.11.2 Area and Location: The upazila occupies an area of 314.92 sq. km.. It is located between
24055' and 25007' north latitudes and 89011' and 89028' east longitudes. It is bounded on the north by
Gabindaganj Upazila of Gaibandha Zila and east by Sonatola Upazila, Gabtali Upazila and Bogra
Sadar Upazila. On the other hand, Bogra Sadar Upazila, Kahaloo Upazila and Dhubchanchia Upazila
are bounded south and Kalai Upazila and Khetlal Upazila of Joypurhat Zila surround its west.
3.11.3 Administrative/Geographic Unit: The upazila consists of 1 paurashava, 9 wards, 31
mahallas, 12 unions, 237 populated mauzas and 409 villages. The average size of population of each
ward and mahalla are 2405 and 698 respectively. On the other hand, the average size of population
of each union, mauza and village are 29755, 1507 and 873 respectively.
3.11.4 Housing and Household Characteristics: In the upazila, there are 99242 households.
Distribution of household by type shows that there are 99.88% general unit, 0.03% institutional and
0.09% other unit.
• Household Size: The average household size (General) for the upazila is 3.8 persons, for
rural area the size is also 3.8 and for urban area the size is slightly higher i.e. 3.9.
• Type of Housing Structure: In the upazila, 2.9% general households live in pucca house,
24.8% in semi-pucca house, 71.2% in kutcha house and the remaining 1.1% live in jhupri
which is shown in a pie-chart in figure 11.1.

• Access to Electricity: All the 12 unions of the upazila have brought under the Rural
Electrification Program. However, a total of 45.8% general households reported to have
electricity connection in the entire upazila in 2011 as against 17.5% in 2001.

3.11.5 Population Characteristics: According to Population and Housing Census 2011, the total
population of the upazila is 378700 of which 190376 are males and 188324 are females. The sex ratio
of the upazila is 101 which has remarkably decreased in 2011 as against 106 in 2001.
• Growth Rate: The decadal population growth rate for the upazila is 7.46% and the annual
compound growth rate is 0.71%. The decadal growth rates over the last half-century are
shown in table 11.1.

47.9% for male and 40.2% for female. It shows an increase of 8.1, 6.0 and 10.4 percent point
in 2011 over 2001 for both sex, male and female respectively. In the upazila, the literacy is
the highest i.e. 68.6% in Ward No.07 of Sibganj Paurashava and the lowest i.e.39.2% in
Maidanhata Union.

3.12.1 Background: Sonatola, the smallest upazila of Bogra Zila in respect of area came into
existence as a thana on January 25, 1981 and upgraded to upazila in 1984. Nothing is definitely
known about origin of the upazila name. It is generally believed that the upazila might have been
name after the name of mauza Sonatola wherein its headquarters is located.
3.12.2 Area and location: The upazila occupies an area of 156.75 sq. km.. It is located between
24°55' and 25°04' north latitudes and 89°26' and 89°41' east longitudes. It is bounded on the north by
Sughatta Upazila and Gobindaganj Upazila of Gaibandha Zila and the east by Sariakandi Upazila. On
other flank, Sariakandi Upazila and Gabtali Upazila boarder its south and Shibganj Upazila and
Gabtali Upazila surround its west.
3.12.3 Administrative/Geographic Unit: The upazila consists of 1 paurashava, wards, 9 mahallas,
7 unions, 94 populated mauzas and 125 villages. The average size of population of each ward and
mahalla are 2747 and 263 respectively. On the other hand, the average size of population of each
union, mauza and village are 23151, 1724 and 1296 respectively.
3.12.4 Housing and Household Characteristics: In the upazila, there are 48569 households.
Distribution of household by type shows that there are 99.86% general unit, 0.02% institutional and
0.12% other unit.
• Household Size: The average household size (General) for the upazila is 3.8 persons, for
both rura and urban area the size is also 3.8.
• Type of Housing Structure: In the upazila, 2.5% general households live in pucca house,
17.0% in semi-pucca house, 79.8% in kutcha house and the remaining 0.7% live in jhupri
which is shown in a pie-chart in figure 12.1.
