“This proud
Yorkshireman is now
very much an
adopted St Helener!”
As he prepares to celebrate his tenth season in the
red vee Alex Walmsley can survey a distinguished
record of four Super League titles, one Challenge
Cup and three Dream Team selections.
At 31, with 225 appearances under his belt, Big Al retains the same
dedication, ambition and enthusiasm he had on the day he
signed.
And the 6ft 5 front rower is still at the peak of his powers, with his
defence-scattering go-forward and leadership being an integral
part of the Saints trophy-winning machine.
Saints had high hopes when they plucked the
Championship's young player of the year from Batley
Bulldogs – Big Al being a rough diamond and a
relatively late stater to the pro game after
playing at Dewsbury Celtic.
But never in a million years would
Saints have expected to strike
such gold – with Big Al going
from 'a project' to one of
the best prop forwards in
the world of rugby
league, overcoming a
career-threatening
broken neck in the
process.
Within two years he
was running around
Old Trafford with
his first Grand Final
ring, and a year
later he was in the
Dream Team and
fielding offers from
the NRL for the first
time.
But despite the lure of
Down Under, Big Al
has remained loyal to
the Saints – becoming a
key component of the
club's success. And
dovetailing with that, this
proud Yorkshireman is
now very much an
adopted St Helener!
The tributes set out in this
brochure from past and
present teammates, coaches
and opponents testify how
hugely respected Big Al is as he
sets out on this landmark year of
ten years in the red vee.

Big Al, startled giraffe, sorry I mean Alex...
Here it is, the year you've always longed
for- everything being about you, you and
more you...
No in all serious my mate, it deserves to
be about you. Seven years playing at
Saints together, winning the 2014 Grand
Final together and both back then and
still now there is no doubt in my mind of
how unbelievable a player you are. A key
part in Saints' victories and a more than
worthy England International. A wrecking
ball is an understatement.
Not only that, but off the field you've
always been a good mate and still are
today.
Quality nights out and in, our families

Looking forward to the future I know that

you and your family and maybe a hair

Enjoy this year mate- you deserve it.
