Alternative Assessment can develop values and attitudes

Auni Nadiah Binti Mohd Shahrin Tesl D

Alternative assessment can develop values and attitudes in students ● Introduction Alternative assessment has been widely used in teaching and learning in primary schools. Through this type of assessment, students' skill in a subject is measured rather than their level of knowledge. The main objective of alternative assessment is to give students the chance to show off their skills and complete assignments. This is because alternative assessment is firmly based on an individual's capacity to act using recently acquired knowledge. It is also known as a performance exam or authentic assessment. The student will be required to complete meaningful tasks that demonstrate a thorough comprehension of the teaching and learning objectives as part of the assessment. In contrast with traditional assessment strategies, which solely measure a student's knowledge, alternative assessment encourages a student to put on their thinking skills and use that information in an innovative manner to solve an issue. There are so many examples of alternative assessment strategies which include peer assessment, project, interviews, oral presentation, observation, scrapbook, written assignments and more. In this essay, I will evaluate whether alternative assessments can develop the values and attitudes or not for students. ● Alternative assessments provide students opportunities to real-life settings Many school teachers have begun to use the alternative assessment strategies in the classroom because it is very important to the students in order to enhance their performance in learning. This is because it provides the students with an opportunity to address practical challenges and apply their knowledge to real-life settings. For example, using interview as an alternative assessment can give students the gist of how to deal with real interview questions when they apply for a job. Thus, students must use their knowledge and abilities in a real-world context during interviews. This real-world application aids in strengthening their comprehension of the lessons they have studied in class. Other than that, through interviewing, students 6 C’s which are communication skills, such as their ability to communicate both verbally and nonverbally, listen intently, and express themselves clearly, are enhanced. These are essential abilities for success in a variety of real-world scenarios, including meetings, presentations, and job interviews. Furthermore, interviews can improve student’s critical thinking due to the involvement of bloom taxonomy which are creating, evaluating, analysing, applying, understanding and remembering. This fosters critical thinking skills. Therefore, this strategy allows students to assess information critically and make informed decisions, which is valuable in real-life problem-solving scenarios. ● Alternative assessments can be time constraints for teachers Alternative assessment is one of the engaging methods that can be applied by a teacher in a classroom. This is due to the various types of alternatives assessment that students can learn from. In addition to typical tests or quizzes, alternative assessments come in a variety of forms, including projects, portfolios, interviews ,self-assessment, presentations, and hands-on learning

exercises. This range accommodates various learning preferences and methods, enabling students to highlight their interests and strengths in ways that speak to them. Thus, when the students are able to pick their interest through alternative assessment, it will make them more creative and innovative. This is because students are frequently encouraged to exhibit creativity, originality, and invention in their work through alternative assessments. Students are also free to explore ideas, try out solutions, and think creatively through projects, presentations, performances, or other creative assignments that pique their curiosity and imagination. However in one interview session with a year 4 teacher said that alternative assessment can cause time constraints. The majority of educators stated that the planning, designing, reporting, and recording of the data and evidence gathered from the assessment done requires a significant amount of their time when using alternative assessments. Teachers must provide content that is appropriate for the various requirements and skill levels of their students in order to create an assessment tool, which is a time-consuming procedure. “I feel it is a challenge for me to design the assessment instrument that is tally with the students’ proficiency. You know what, we only been given a week to design the assessment and I found it is ridiculous” Therefore, teachers should receive cascading training on a more regular basis. As a matter of fact, the most important factor in raising the professionalism of teachers when they apply the new assessment method is regular training to guarantee that the knowledge and information can be conveyed to the micro implementers, this is extremely important. It might be a struggle to use alternative assessment for the first time in the classroom, but teachers must slowly adapt and adopt the method as it will benefit the students in the future. ● Alternative assessment can develop values and attitudes Alternative assessment can develop values and attitudes in students. This is because during the assessment, students will examine their own work and make improvement goals. For instance, students are prompted to consider their own work in light of that of their peers when they participate in peer assessment. They become more self-aware and can pinpoint areas for growth thanks to this self-reflection. Students get better at goal-setting, tracking their progress, and taking responsibility for their own learning as they grow in their ability to evaluate their own work. Thus, students will gain self-awareness, self-efficacy, and a growth mentality via this process. Other than that, students will persevere in the face of difficulties, and never stop trying to get better. These encounters can foster virtues like self-control, resiliency, and an openness to receiving criticism. One of the C in 6 C’s which is character can also be developed through alternative assessment when students are able to assess their peers. ● Alternative assessment better in improving teaching and learning processes Alternative assessment might have a minor problem in order to excel in it. However, it has been proven that teachers are better able to recognize and assist students who require additional guidance, which improves the effectiveness of the teaching and learning processes. Compared

to traditional evaluations, alternative assessments give teachers important information about students' abilities in a more comprehensive and varied way. For example, alternative assessments frequently include interactive exercises or group projects that call on students to actively connect with the subject matter, collaborate with classmates, and express their opinions. Therefore, teachers can evaluate students' capabilities in collaboration, communication, problem-solving, and leadership through observation and interaction throughout these activities. Projects are one of the examples for alternative assessment which can enhance students' leadership, problem solving and communication skills. For instance, in project based learning, students will be divided into groups and they will appoint one person in the group as the leader. Next, they are required to discuss how to separate the task evenly through communication. Finally, they will work together in order to solve the problem which is the project itself. This example clearly illustrates that alternative assessment can help students in improving their skills in life and allow teachers to guide students who need extra guidance. In conclusion, alternative assessment might have the advantages and disadvantages for the teacher or the students. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of alternative assessment clearly can be seen through the students' performance in the classroom. They will have more opportunities to show their abilities in real life situations and at the same time improve teaching and learning process. Teachers might face challenges while using the strategies yet it will be beneficial for both teacher and students in a long period of time.

ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT (AUTHENTIC) Alternative assessment are direct and authentic because it provides direct evidence of application of knowledge, skills, and attitudes Perform a task. For example by doing project task by creating a historical newspaper front page reporting on a significant event from World War II Real life experience. For example an interview session conducted in the classroom. This scenario can be the examples for students during a job interview in the future. Focuses on inquiry (higher-level Bloom’s) analyse, evaluate, create Assumes knowledge has multiple meaning. Alternative assessments recognize that learners have diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. By offering a range of assessment methods such as projects, presentations, portfolios, and performances, they acknowledge that individuals may approach and understand concepts differently. Student-centered Alternative assessments frequently provide students with opportunities to make choices about the topics they study, the tasks they complete, or the methods they use to demonstrate their understanding. This autonomy allows students to pursue their interests, strengths, and learning preferences, fostering a sense of ownership and agency over their learning process. ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT V

TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENT Traditional assessments are indirect and inauthentic focus on memorization and recall Select a respond. By answering a objective question in exam Contrived by the instructor Teacher will create a question which can not be experienced by the students and the teacher itself Focuses on bits of information (lower-level Bloom’s) apply, understand, remember Assumes knowledge has a single meaning. Traditional assessments commonly feature closed-ended questions, such as multiple-choice, true/false, or fill-in-theblank questions. These formats typically offer limited response options, with only one correct answer predetermined by the test creator. This implies that there is a single correct interpretation or understanding of the content being assessed. Teacher-centered. Traditional assessments are often designed according to predefined standards or learning objectives established by the teacher or curriculum guidelines. The focus is on assessing students' mastery of specific content knowledge or skills deemed important by the teacher or educational authority. VS TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENT
