Taking a few drinks every once in a while, is not a problem. In fact, it is a great way to
help you relax, let loose and have fun. However, taking alcohol in excess not only
harms your mind and body but also wreaks havoc on your relationships. Indulging too
much in alcohol results in alcohol abuse and dependence, which is a fancy way of
saying you get addicted to it.

Alcoholism is among the most common type of addiction most adults have, and its
most significant and adverse effects affect intimacy, marriage, and partnership. That's
why alcohol and marriage are a complicated pairing that is so difficult to handle
without professional guidance.

Here are ways alcoholism can harm your marriage.

Intimacy is the cornerstone of a healthy marriage and is what distinguishes a

romantic relationship from a platonic one. The extra level of physical and emotional

closeness helps develop trust, stability, affection, commitment, respect, expectations,

and shared values.

We often express this intimacy through hugs, cuddles, sex, and telling each other
how you feel. However, when alcoholism comes in, you become preoccupied,
emotionally unavailable, and unable to perform sexually, which erodes this
closeness.

Physical and Mental health issues

It's not surprising that alcohol abuse can lead to health issues. It affects your
digestive system, weight and puts you at risk of getting certain types of cancer.
Additionally, beneath the changes in attitude, more serious issues might be at play.
Alcohol dependence causes anxiety and depression and can worsen these
conditions if they are already present. Similarly, your physical and mental health is
affected because you also don't eat or sleep well.

Financial issues

Alcohol addiction is an expensive habit to have. Because you crave drinking alcohol
every day, you prioritize it above all else, and you are willing to spend all your money
to get your next drink. Additionally, you become unreliable, especially at work,
meaning you could either make less money or lose your job altogether, which would,
in turn, continue to drain your finances.

Increased chances of violence

Alcohol consumption significantly contributes to violence in a relationship, whether
physical, sexual, or psychological. Persons suffering from alcohol abuse are more
secretive, anxious, and irritable, meaning they can become violent when they feel
confronted.

Fertility issues

Excessive drinking can affect your ability to reproduce. For women, it makes it harder
to get pregnant, while for men, it affects sperm quality and causes a reduction in
sperm production. In fact, a study found that chances of a miscarriage increase
anywhere between 24 times if both partners drank during the conception.

You reinforce each other's drinking problems

Another report found that if one partner started drinking, their partner is 23 times
more likely to start drinking or increase their intake in response. This can make it
harder to cut back or quit altogether, and since both partners are indulging, the
problems mentioned above also get worse. Sometimes even leads to divorce.

That said, dealing with alcoholism is possible, and the same study men몭oned above also indicates
that if one partner decides to drink less or give up alcohol altogether, they can posi몭vely influence
their partner. While this is a good place to start, it's not enough. You need professional help to

overcome your addic몭on, and drug rehab centers in Arizona can help you do that.   3 Views
