Example: The way people form social circles has changed, causing more people to feel lonely. 1 People have an instinct to form ________________. 2 ________________ language is a part of face-to-face communication. 3 People moving between countries can lose the ________________ of family and friends. 4 Culture shock can happen when _______________ is unknown to you. 5 Even if you are with people, understanding, helpfulness, and ________________ is necessary. 6 Loneliness and aloneness ________________ the same. 7 The writer thinks people should ________________ to lonely people. 14 Loneliness A recent study has shown that people are lonelier. One of the biggest reasons why more and more people are describing themselves as lonely is the fact that digital technology has changed the way people develop a social circle. We are social beings. Humans have a group instinct and most individuals are most comfortable when they are with other people. This means physical contact and face-to-face communication. So many people, especially young people, spend a lot of time chatting online to virtual friends on social media, instead of making friends in the real world. Although it can be very satisfying to have hundreds of virtual friends all around the world, we need the ‘human touch’ to deal with the ups and downs of life; especially the downs. Sometimes, people just don’t have someone to turn to when they need someone to hold or someone to talk to face to face. Real communication involves body language and you cannot get authentic body language online. Migration of people has also resulted in loss of family and friends as a support network. Humans need to understand their habitat and this can be difficult in a strange culture. When everyone and everything is different to what you knew before, you can feel lonely. This is called ‘culture shock’ and is an important reason why people who are new to a country can feel lonely. Being alone and loneliness are not the same thing. You can live alone and not be lonely if you have a social circle, and you can be lonely living with people if you don’t communicate and try to understand and help each other. We must all reach out to people who seem lonely and try to make the world a better place.

Name:_______________________________ Unit test 2 © Oxford University Press 1 Listen to Jess talking about a trip she’s planning with her friend and then decide which sentences are true (T) or false (F). Example: Jess and Margie are going to Iceland for a fortnight. T 1 They chose a flight at midnight because it’s cheaper. ___ 2 They’re planning to go swimming at the Blue Lagoon often. ___ 3 Jess doesn’t think she’ll enjoy swimming at the Blue Lagoon. ___ 4 They’ve organized a bus tour of nearby areas. ___ 5 Jess’s cousins have horses. ___ 6 Jess hopes they’ll see wild horses. ___ 7 This’ll be Jess’s first time in Iceland. ___ 14 2 Read the text about the future. Correct the mistakes in the sentences. 1 There won’t be any cars in cities. ___________________________________ 2 Planes will be faster and more comfortable. ___________________________________ 3 Train travel will become common again by the end of the century. ___________________________________ 4 Experts agree about the sizes of classes in future schools. ___________________________________ 5 Schools will be smaller in the future. ___________________________________ 6 There will be more school libraries. ___________________________________ 7 The writer predicts that there won’t be any badly behaved students in the future. 14 No one can predict the distant future accurately, but experts can give us a good idea of what changes will take place in the next 20- or 30-years’ time. They tell us how our towns and cities will change. For example, there will be more tall buildings and fewer individual houses. There will be solar panels on all buildings to produce electricity. We also have a good idea of what transport will be like. It’s likely that there will be fewer cars, especially in cities, because of pollution and the cost of fuel. Trains will become the main form of transport. They will be faster and more comfortable and reliable than they are today. Fewer people will travel by plane as the cost of fuel goes up, but by the end of the century new forms of cheap, clean fuel will make intercontinental flights common again. Experts don’t agree about how education might change. Some say that in the future, classes will be smaller. Others say that classes will be bigger, with two teachers in the same class – an interesting idea because the teachers can teach together and learn from each other, and students will learn more from two teachers. Some experts say that students will have more homework; others say they will have less! But most agree that schools in the future will be much bigger and there won’t be as many as there are today. Some classes won’t have teachers at all because teaching will happen online. All students will have their own tablets. School timetables will be different and students won’t study at the same time. Some students will come to school earlier in the morning and leave at lunchtime, while other students will have classes in the afternoon. Another prediction is that there won’t be any school libraries in the future because all books will be online. There is one thing that few experts tell us about – how discipline and punishments will change! What will happen to naughty students? Will all students behave well in the future? No, bad behaviour at school is one thing that I think will stay the same!

We all know that science has been very successful in human advancement, so we can assume that the scientific method works. The results show that it does. Something that many people don’t know is that the scientific method can work in any area of life, not just science. For example, if you have a problem in your everyday life, the scientific method can be used to identify the problem and find a logical solution. It’s also true for problems in social, family, health, or even school lives. There are six main steps in the scientific method. First, you need to make an observation or ask a question. The next stage is research – you need to look at the facts. After you have understood the research, you can make a hypothesis and make predictions. The next steps are to test your prediction and then finally reach a conclusion. In real life, for example, if you have a problem with your mobile phone, first you might ask a question like: ‘Why can’t I see my social media updates?’ Then you should do some research: check if your friends have had any updates – maybe there really were no updates in the last ten minutes! Now you are ready to make a hypothesis and then a prediction: ‘There might be a problem with the wi-fi connection in my school. If I go to the library, I can use their wi-fi and then I might be able to see my updates.’ With a science problem, the next step would be to do an experiment. This could involve having the right equipment and following the correct procedure in a laboratory, but in your situation, you just have to get to the library to test your prediction. Once you have done the ‘experiment’, it’s time to analyse the data and findings and reach a conclusion: it was just the wi-fi at school – you really should spend more time in the library. 1 How do we know that the scientific method works? ______________________________________ 2 What is the last step of the scientific method? ______________________________________ 3 Why does the writer suggest talking to your friends? ______________________________________ 4 What stage of the scientific process does the writer think of going to the library? ______________________________________ 5 Why is it a good idea to go to the library? ______________________________________ 6 What do scientists need to test their predictions? ______________________________________ 7 What did the writer find after ‘analysing the data’? ______________________________________ 14

The tomb is where Enchalot, the most powerful magician of his time, died hundreds of years ago. This magician went to Nepal to learn and spent more than three years all alone in a cave with only one small opening to receive food and water and remove waste. The local people looked after him but he never saw or spoke to anyone in all the time he was alone in the cave. He used the time to study magic and meditation. When he left the cave, he surprised the local people because he knew about their lives even though he had not been with them. He returned to his home town but, at first, no one recognized him because his hair was much longer and he was so thin. At home, he still liked to go away to a cabin high in the mountains for long periods and when he returned, he told people about his travels to other countries during meditation but no one believed him. Anyway, I went to the tomb and just stood there thinking about the greatest magician with no one else around. Then I heard, ‘I see you are a true believer.’ There was a man next to me! I said, ‘Yes, I think so.’ The man said, ‘Well, I’m here, ask me what you want to know.’ I turned to look more closely at him and I realized that he was Enchalot, the magician! I was a bit scared but strangely I felt relaxed with him. I asked him many questions about himself and his studies until the sun went down, and then he simply disappeared. It was the strangest experience in my life and it has changed my understanding of reality.

There was plastic waste floating on the sea everywhere and he decided to do something about it. When he returned home to Sydney in the same year, he organized a special event called Clean Up Sydney Harbour Day. Over 40,000 volunteers cleared away old cars, glass bottles, and plastic of all kinds. It was so successful that he started Clean Up Australia in 1990, and then three years later, the Clean Up the World (CUW) project was founded. CUW is a campaign that inspires and encourages people worldwide to clean up and protect their environment. The organization’s main annual event is Clean up the World Weekend in September each year. During the weekend, over 600 groups from every continent clear waste from beaches, river banks, and streets. Around 35 million people in 120 countries now participate in the project, making it one of the largest community-based environmental campaigns in the world. Volunteers do things like collecting and recycling waste, planting trees, organizing exhibitions, competitions, and educational events. Today, many volunteers continue their activities all year round. If you want to organise a CUW event in your community, there are a lot of ideas for activities on the website and you can read about other people’s activities. For example, volunteer divers collected underwater rubbish from the Red Sea while hundreds of local volunteers and tourists cleaned up the beaches. The divers have continued their activities and they have re-introduced coral to the cleaned-up areas. In Kenya, 200 students planted trees while 300 volunteers collected eight tonnes of waste. The waste was sold for recycling and the money was given to the community to help build schools.

Most men like it because they hate going to shops. And although many women love walking around shops and trying on clothes, they are also changing their shopping habits and buying online – they realize that the best prices are found on the internet. And shopping online means you don’t have to park the car, which is great because car parks are expensive! There are other advantages, too. Nobody tries to sell you something that you don’t want to buy, and you never meet a rude shop assistant in an online shop. Sometimes, badly designed websites are difficult to use, but most sites are very good, and that makes internet shopping a relaxing and pleasant experience. The main reason most people buy from online shops is that they get the best deals there. Price comparison sites tell you where to get the cheapest prices for electronic goods, jewellery, clothes, or anything else you want. Are there any problems with online shopping? Of course there are. You can read about the things that you want to buy, but you can’t see them or touch them. So you could buy something and find it’s not what you really wanted. One way to solve this problem is to visit a real shop, look at the thing you want, and then buy it on the internet. A lot of people do this, but it’s unfair for the shop. Another problem with internet shopping is that the things you buy are not always delivered quickly. Websites often promise next day delivery, but sometimes you have to wait for two weeks for your new TV or computer. And then, what happens if your new TV or computer doesn’t work? It’s harder to exchange goods that you bought on the internet or get a refund. The thing that worries most people about online shopping is that they might be cheated. They hear stories of people sending money and never receiving their goods, or they worry that their bank information will be stolen. This happens occasionally, but not as often as media reports suggest.

Unit test 1 audio script © Oxford University Press Audio script My aunt Jill decided to do some research into our family’s origins and some of the things she’s discovered have been very interesting. She’s found out that my great-grandmother, who has always been a mystery to the family, was from Ethiopia! I didn’t know that I had any African blood in me but now I know that I do. In fact, we all have African blood if you think about it because humans originally came from the African continent. Anyway, aunt Jill also discovered that our family has Norwegian blood quite far back in my ancestry. However, most of my more recent family links are to Ireland. In fact, probably about 45 per cent of my DNA is Irish. My aunt thought we had French blood, but we don’t. Other than finding out about DNA, my aunt’s research has made a lot of things clearer about my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, and more distant relatives. Now I know facts about their births and deaths, and sometimes even some information about their adventures. There are a few characteristics that many people in our family share; for example, many of our family members were able to predict the future! Research into your ancestry provides information about genetic heritage which can be useful for health reasons, too. If many people in your family suffered from certain diseases or disabilities, you can make sure you look after those areas of health. In my family, it looks like heart problems are quite common so I know I need to take care of my diet and exercise. There is one whole side of the family that none of us knew about. It seems like one of my distant relatives had a secret family. He was married so he kept this other family secret but my aunt found out about them. I don’t know how she did, but she did! All in all, I am very glad my aunt has discovered all these things. Most importantly, it has helped me understand my family better.

Unit test 2 audio script © Oxford University Press Audio script My friend Margie and I are planning to go to Iceland for two weeks at Christmas. We’re going to stay with Margie’s grandparents who live in Iceland. They have already agreed that we can stay with them. We fly out from Gatwick Airport on the 20th December at 11.00 p.m. It’s a late flight but we chose it because it’s a lot cheaper. I suppose not many people want to fly at that time. We’re going to catch a bus from the airport out to the countryside where Margie’s grandparents have a small house. I’m not sure whether I’ll like the cold but Margie promises me that we’ll have a fantastic time. Her grandparents live near the Blue Lagoon – glacial lakes that are heated by natural underground heating because of the volcanoes in Iceland. We’re planning to go swimming at the Blue Lagoon as often as we can. Margie says that it’s magical swimming in lakes when there’s snow and ice but you’re feeling warm because the water is heated. I know I’ll love that! We’re hoping to go on a bus tour of other areas in Iceland but we haven’t organized that yet because Margie’s grandparents asked us to wait and see if they’ll be able to come with us. If they can come then we’ll go in their car rather than the bus. Margie says we’ll see wild horses. In fact, we’re going to stay one night with her cousins who have horses. I’m looking forward to seeing the wild ones and the ones her cousins have because horses are my favourite animals. Iceland is a land of fire and ice because there are volcanoes and glaciers; hot and cold. I’m going to enjoy every day we have there because I’ve always wanted to go to Iceland.

Unit test 3 audio script © Oxford University Press Audio script Sue I really like this project about saving the local park environment. There’s too much rubbish everywhere. Jed Yeah, you’re right. The fact that we’re going to use social media to raise awareness and set up a website to get people involved is excellent. And I also like the idea of a petition, so we can take our findings about rubbish in the park to the council. Sue There is a problem, though. I have no idea how to set up a website. Do you know? Jed Hmm … I don’t know a lot about setting up sites, but hey! It doesn’t have to be a problem. We can research how to do it. Sue Maybe we could ask Paul to work with us. He’s really good at online stuff. Jed We can only work in pairs so we can’t involve Paul. I think we should start by writing a petition. That’s something we can do now. We just need to collect data about rubbish in the park. Sue OK. Well, you go to the park and start collecting facts about the amount of rubbish. I think divide it into types of rubbish, such as plastic, cardboard, glass, fast food wrappings, and so on. Jed And what will you be doing? Sue I’ll do some research in the library about what the park was like a few decades ago to compare plant and animal life, water sources, general state of the environment then and now. Jed Good idea. Also try to find some photos of the park as it used to be. Sue Will do. Jed Right. Well, first we get the information but then we will need to put forward some possible solutions if we want people to take us seriously. Sue True. Research and data collection. We sound like scientists! Jed We are. This is a school science project so we need to act like proper scientists. Our question is – How can we save the park? We’re researching the types of rubbish that are spoiling the park, making a hypothesis that raising public awareness will help, which we’ll test using the methods we’ve suggested. After that, we analyse the findings and write a report. Sue I wonder if we’ll be able to do everything – the petition, a website, getting people motivated on social media. Jed Think positive. We have two months to do it in. We also need to write up a report describing the methods we’ve used and giving some conclusions as to which methods worked best and why. Sue Sure. But first things first – get our information! Jed OK. Let’s get on with it. See you later.

Unit test 4 audio script © Oxford University Press Audio script I’m sure that lots of people like to plan their travelling very carefully, with itineraries and reservations and routes all organized in advance. Some people would make sure there were never surprises if they could. Limited time, a budget, and a list of particular sightseeing sites in mind mean many people plan everything in advance. There’s no doubt that, in certain situations, planning everything in advance is essential. For certain kinds of personalities, such as control freaks or very organized people, it is the only way they want to do things. For myself, though, I prefer the unknown and the idea of planning is unpleasant. If I could have my idea of perfect travelling I would just go to the airport and catch the first plane available to somewhere I have never been. Then, when I arrived at my destination, I would just go where my feet lead me. When I tell friends this, they say that it’s bound to be a disaster if I travel that way but I disagree. I think that only if you do things with a spontaneous attitude and a spirit of adventure can you find the hidden places that are off the beaten track. I don’t want to stand around with crowds of people looking at sites just because everyone says they are important or historic. I want to find the unexpected sites, the forgotten places in the middle of nowhere where I can stand alone and absorb the atmosphere. Later, I can research the place if I want to but the most important thing for me is to feel the place. You can tell a lot about a place by standing silently within it and just letting the place in. For me, travel plans, schedules, tours and day trips with other tourists leave me cold. I want the rush of just walking or cycling in a place, following a path and seeing where it takes me!

Unit test 5 audio script © Oxford University Press Audio script F = Francis M = Maureen F My grandfather asked me an interesting question the other day. Is life today better than it was in the past? It got me thinking. M I certainly believe that from a medical point of view, we are better off these days. People are living longer and medical advances have done much to improve our lives. F It really depends on what you mean by ‘better’. We may be living longer, but it’s a question of quality over quantity for me. Are people happier? M Happiness is a very difficult thing to compare. We definitely have more physical things and can travel more and learn more. I think we are better off now. There’s much more variety in business and entertainment, for example. F But you’re talking about quantity again. We have more but more of what? I don’t think we have more fresh air or more wildlife. In fact, I think we have less natural world but more people, more pollution, and more traffic. We are destroying our planet. M We have very different opinions. I think that things are better now and you don’t. F In the world today, things seem to matter more than they should – gadgets, devices, consumer goods. Advertising and social media are turning people into greedy, shallow creatures. Some people have too many things and some don’t have enough. A ‘better’ world would be one where everyone had what they need. Even if you just consider physical things it’s not a better world. Then, if you consider other things like communication, there are many more ways to communicate these days and we can communicate globally. But is the communication better? Some would say that text speak and online communication are damaging the quality of language. M Okay, I see what you mean. Still, however, you forget just how poor the quality of life for many people was in the past. We are not yet perfect, but I think we are better. F Well, I think we are greedy, gadget-obsessed consumers in danger of forgetting the simple and fulfilling things that cost nothing. M And I think we are lucky to have the choices and opportunities we have.

Unit test 6 audio script © Oxford University Press Audio script My aunt, Gina, decided to go on a television show that does make overs – you know, changes peoples’ appearances with new hairstyles, clothes, and things like that. She said she wanted to try something different and also, it was a chance to be on a TV show! There were three women and three men having make overs. They all stayed in the same house while the show was filmed. She says it was great fun and she liked the other people a lot. Gina, who is a bit of a tomboy, likes to wear comfortable clothes and do things that guys usually do. She plays rugby and is very tough and sporty, so she was interested to see how she would look with another style. She wanted to surprise her friends at the party at the end of the show, when the people on the show would meet all their friends and family with a new look. The first thing they did was change her hairstyle and hair colour. Gina went in with long, straight, light brown hair that was messy and came out with shoulder length hair that was styled into long waves. Her hair was highlighted so that it glinted golden. It looked really nice and suited her face shape and eyes. Already, she looked very different. It’s amazing what a change in hairstyle can do to a face! Next, they put make up on her face. Not a lot because Gina doesn’t like make up very much, but enough to highlight her best features. She looked like a million dollars! She looked stunning. Usually, Gina wears tracksuits and trainers so the show’s stylist gave her a choice of different clothes to try on and decide which she thought suited her best. Gina liked a dress that really showed her slim waist and her toned legs from all the sport she does. She chose a lovely golden colour that brought out the gold in her hair. Some jewellery to go with the dress and a pair of high heeled shoes were added to complete her new look. Everyone was amazed to see Gina looking so different. The very next day, Gina was back to her sporty look and on the field playing a rugby game. She still has the dress and things from the show and she says it was fun to be on TV, but she likes being the way she is.
