PHS COUNSELINGDEPT. SPARTAN COUNSELOR'S MISSION

Dean of Instruction - The mission of the Porter High School counseling department is to provide a
Loree Munro comprehensive counseling program addressing the academic, career, and social
development of our students. With the partnership of our educators,
House of Engineering - parents/ guardians, and the community, Porter High School Counselors will

successful, responsible and productive members of the global community.

House of Business - PARENT NIGHTS

Porter High School Counselors hosted various parent nights for each grade
House of Arts - level. Parents were informed about graduation requirements, endorsements,
Susie Velis testing information, and much more. Freshman/ Sophomore parent night took
place on January 14. Junior parent night took place on January 19.

LONESTAR MENTORSHIP GROUP DEPARTMENT EVENTS

Every month, Mr. Alfred Dorsey, Director of the Men's Center at Lone Star March 24 - TSI Testing
Community College Kingwood meets with 10 of our Freshmen Spartans who are March 29 - English 1 EOC
in the EAGLES program. March 30 - TSI Testing
March 31 - English 2 EOC
April 1 - EOC Retest
April 5 - ZAPS
April 9 - ACT @ PHS
April 29 - Honors Breakfast

This program focuses on making good choices, understanding success, and being a
successful student. In May, a few professors from Lone Star will visit Porter and meet
with the students about their future!

STEM DAY

On February 12, a group of PHS students attended STEM day at Lone Star College Kingwood
campus. The students participated in a variety of small group activities that revolved around STEM
careers. Students built circuits, looked at blood splatter, and amoeba, studied the sky, moon and
stars, then the Earth and all its layers. The group then created video a game and learned the art of
graphic design. The students had a great time and are excited to go back next year.

HIGH SCHOOL HIGH TECH

The first High School High tech meeting was held on February 19. PHS students are learning job
skills to help them transition from high school to their next step in life. They covered
introduction sessions to professional communication such as email correspondence, cover
letters, and thank you letters, resumes. The next meeting will take place in April.

COUNSELOR CORNER!

On Thursdays, everybody's favorite
counselors sit in the cafe during
lunches and make information
available to students. Students are
welcome to use that time to come
and ask any questions they may
have about academics, college
admissions or scholarships!

DRUGAWARENESS PRESENTATIONS

Ms. White from Tri-County Youth Prevention Services visited the freshman class on February 22/ 23 t o
discuss the topic of Alcohol Abuse. Students actively participated in activities and learned about the
long lasting effects of alcoholism on the brain.

PSAT INFORMATION PRESENTATIONS

PHS Counselors held an information session on February 16 & 17th as students received their PSAT
scores. Students created accounts on College Board and Khan Academy where they will be able to study
their weak areas to become stronger for the next time they take the test.

COURSE REQUESTS

During the month of February, the counselors met with every student individually to help them select
courses for next year. Students were able to select advanced or on-level core classes. They were also
able to choose their electives for the upcoming year.

NACACCOLLEGE FAIR

On February 9, PHS Juniors and
counselors attended a college fair by
NACAC, the National Association for
College Admission Counseling.
Students spoke to representatives
from universities nationwide.
