Lessons From the Parsha…

)‫ כב‬.‫”ָנשׂא ֶאת רֹאשׁ בְֵּני ֵג ְרשׁוֹן גַּם ֵהם“ (ד‬
After the ‫ בני קהת‬were counted at the end of last week’s
‫פרשה‬, the Torah commanded here that the ‫ בני גרשון‬also be
counted. Why, though, does the ‫ פסוק‬say “‫ ”גַּם ֵהם‬- count also
them?
Rav Moshe Feinstein says that there is an important
lesson to be learned from here. The ‫ יצר הרע‬has a trick that he
plays on people to persuade them not to learn Torah or do
Mitzvos. He tries to convince them that their learning or their
Mitzvos will be so insignificant, that it doesn’t even worth trying.
‘Why should I bother learning if I won’t grow up to be a big ‫תלמיד‬
‫ חכם‬anyway?’ ‘Why should I bother giving for a ‫ צדקה‬if I can’t give
that much anyway?’
That is why, when it came to the ‫בני גרשון‬, the Torah
states: “‫”גַּם ֵהם‬. They might have thought that their carrying of
the curtains and boards of the ‫ משכן‬is insignificant in comparison
to the work of the ‫בני קהת‬, who carried the ‫ כלים‬of the ‫משכן‬. The
Torah therefore says “‫”גַּם ֵהם‬: Their work is just as important, for
everyone was needed to successfully transport the ‫משכן‬. As long
as one joins along to serve Hashem ‫לשם שמים‬, it does not make
a difference as to what level his job is. The Torah and ‫ עבודה‬of
every yid is important and necessary to reach the ultimate
goal of '‫עבודת ה‬.

Is it permissible to place a swing or hammock on hooks that are attached to a tree?
Although it is permissible to use a swing that is attached to hooks on a tree, it is not
permissible to place a swing on the hooks on Shabbos, since this is generally a permanent
attachment.

Is it permissible to attach a garden house to an outdoor spigot, or a portable sink to an
outdoor faucet?
One should not attach a hose to an outdoor spigot or a portable sink to an outdoor faucet.
One should also not replace a piece of a gutter that became disconnected.

Is it permissible replace or tighten an air conditioning vent? Is it permissible to
replace or reposition a ceiling tile or spot light??
One should not replace an air conditioning vent that became displaced. Similarly, one
should not reposition an air conditioning vent that became loose, or to tighten a loose
screw.
A ceiling tile or plastic tile beneath a light bulb should not be replaced if it came out of its
frame. Loose spot lights should similarly not be pushed repositioned.

Is it permissible to replace a link of a necklace or bracelet if it became detached on
Shabbos?
It is not permissible to be replaced.
Note: It is not permissible to attach a pendant to a necklace for the first time (i.e. the
pendant was not previously on this necklace).

Is it permissible to take apart the bottom of a cardboard box (that is taped or glued on
the bottom) for the purpose of disposal?
An empty cardboard box (e.g. from a grocery delivery or a box of cereal etc.) should not be
ripped open in order to tear or fold the box for the purpose of disposing it.

When our boys ask good ‫ קשיות‬besides for posting them
outside our classroom we also print each ‫ קשיא‬on a

postcard sized piece of paper with magnets on back so

that their parents can ‫ שעפ נחת‬too each time that

they see these wonderful refrigerator magnets!
