Lessons From the Parsha…
By: HaRav Meir Sternheim,
) כא,"ויעתר יצחק לה' – פרש"י הרבה והפציר בתפלה" (תולדות כה
Our Parsha begins with one of the pillars of Yiddishkeit, תפילה. Having waited ten long years for children, Yitzchok and
Rivka turned to the tried and true method that always yields results. What happened next is to be expected, Rivka bears
children. But the nature of these children and the total opposite paths they would take is quite startling. While still pregnant, 'ה
already informed Rivka that they would be very different. And we see this quite obviously as they grow up and head different
ways, Yaakov to be the יושב אהליםand עשוto become the איש ידע ציד.
Later on in the Parsha we find the beginnings of שנאת ישראלas the פלשתיםargue with Yitzchok over ownership of two
wells dug by the servants of Yitzchok. Only when Yitzchok moved further away and dug a third well did the פלשתיםleave him
alone. The רמב"ןexplains that the first two wells correspond to the two בתי מקדשthat were destroyed by the גויםand the third
well is symbolic of the third בית המקדשwhich will remain forever without any argument or fighting.
All of the above is extremely applicable in our day and age. We live in a generation which makes it very challenging to
instill true Torah values in our children the גמראin . תענית דף זcompares תורהto מים. Just as then the פלשתיםseeked to close
down the source of water, so too today does the world culture try to poison our water, the תורה הקדושהwith its vast array of
temptations. It is so persistent and overwhelming that one can almost not be blamed for feeling helpless against it. But no,
there is one weapon, one guaranteed way to succeed. תפילה. And more תפילה. Only through תפילהcan we raise a Torah true
generation.
The Brisker Rav was asked how he succeeded in raising children so dedicated and loyal to ' הand his Torah. He
answered, “with תהליםand tears.”
Let us all be מחזקourselves in building this very important relationship between us and הקב"ה, by davening to Him that
our most precious possession, our kinderlach grow up to be יושב אהלים, loyal and proud Yidden. After all, תהליםand tears is the
only way.

Is it permissible to sweep the floor on Shabbos?
Sweeping indoors is permissible. However, sweeping outdoors is not permissible even on a paved surface.
Is it permissible to rake leaves on Shabbos?
Raking is not permitted.
Are candles Muktze?
Candles are Muktze. If the candles were lit at the onset of Shabbos, they may not be handled for any purpose, even after
the flames are no longer burning. Candles that have not been lit may be moved for the use of their place in cases of
necessity.
Is it permissible to move a table that has a leichter (candelabra) on it?
If candles are on the table at the onset of Shabbos, then the table itself becomes Muktze and may not be moved, unless
there was another item on the table that will be used on Shabbos as well (for example, challah or cutlery).
What is the permissible method of removing a leichter from a table in order to remove the tablecloth beneath it?
If it is necessary to remove a leichter in order to remove the tablecloth beneath it, one may do so if the following steps are
taken:
Before Shabbos, the leichter should be placed onto a tray that is not specifically designated for candles.
An additional item that has a use on Shabbos should be placed on the tray before Shabbos.
When these two conditions are met, the tray with the leichter on it may be moved on Shabbos for the purpose of
removing the tablecloth.
Special Meet and
Greet with Morah
Hindy Hilman and the
Pe-School Morohs
We love partnering with our pre-school parents in
the chinuch of our youngest (and cutest!)
talmidim. We were encouraged by the overflow
crowd of mothers who came to meet Morah Hindy
and our terrific Pre-School Division staff, at the
home of Mrs. Michelle Goldschmied this past
Tuesday. During this informative and enjoyable
evening, we heard from Morah Hindy, viewed a
unique multimedia presentation featuring our
talmidim, shared ideas and enjoyed delicious
refreshments. Thank you to Mrs. Goldschmied for
opening her home for this evening and to all the
mothers involved in setting up the elegant event!

The students observed and
participated in a hand on lesson
on sound waves. They learned
how vibration causes sound and
that air molecules play an
important part in our hearing. A
thunderstorm wouldn’t ever reach
our ears if it weren’t for vibration
and air molecules! The students
were amazed to see how vibration
causes sound by using a thunder
tube! The students were able to
imitate real thunder sounds using
the tube and the attached spring!

identifying why we feel different emotions and
the circumstances surrounding them. Labeling
how we feel helps us express our emotions
verbally and leads to optimal social-emotional
