Lessons From the Parsha…
By: HaRav Yossi Lieman
Yaakov Avinu, on his way to לבן, detoured to learn in the Yeshiva of שם ועברfor 14 years. שםwas no longer living and the Yeshiva
was run by his grandson עבר. Surely, learning Torah is of paramount importance. No Mitzva is greater. Buy why at this specific juncture of his
life is Yaakov going there? For the first fifteen years of his life, Yaakov Avinu knew and learned Torah by his Zayde, Avrohom Avinu.
Subsequently, until he was sixty-three, he continued delving into Torah with his father, Yitzchak. Now, he has been sent by his father
and his mother to go to לבןand to find a wife. Is this the time to find another Rebbi? Can’t it wait until after he fulfills the instructions of his
father and mother?
Furthermore, despite the greatness of his Torah learning at that time, does it free him from his responsibility to obey his parents? If a
father sends his son to the store to buy something and the son decides that he will first go to Bais Medrash to learn is he properly fulfilling his
?כבוד אבCertainly not, for learning Torah is set aside for a מצוהthat cannot be done by others!
Yet, Yaakov is ultimately held accountable for not fulfilling his כבוד אבonly for the twenty-two years that he was by ;לבןwhile his
years at Yeshiva seem to be approved. Why is this?
Rav Yaakov Kamenetzki, זצ"לresolves this issue by focusing on the type of learning that Yakov was doing by שם ועבר'סYeshiva. שם
lived through the generation of the evil-doers at the time of the מבול. He succeeded in maintaining a high level of קדושהand טהרהdespite
the negative influences of his time. Similarly, עברexperienced the rebellious ideas of נמרודand his cohorts at the time of the דור הפלגהwith
the construction of the famous tower that was to invade the heavenly abode. עברsaw them, heard them and refused to succumb to their ideas
and ideals. He retained his exalted status and carried on with his 'עבודת ה.
This theme of living in trying times and not succumb to the negative influences of the outside world, was the syllabus in the Yeshiva
of שם ועבר. This was the place where Yaakov would learn how to combat the evil of לבןand his ilk. It was a necessary preparation for fulfilling
the instructions of his parents and it was the right thing for Yaakov to do before arriving in חרן. This is comparable to one who is sent by his
father to purchase an אתרוגand לולבand detours to learn what qualities he must seek in finding the best specimens. And Yaakov succeeded in
his quest for direction. His success was aptly described in the words he uttered when returning from לבןtwenty –two years later:
“I lived with לבןand fulfilled the six hundred thirteen מצותand was not influenced by his evil deeds.” Yaakov Avinu succeeded at
maintaining and improving his ' עבודת הin the most trying of times and places. May the רבש"עassist us in following his lead in combating the
negative influences that are so rampant in our world today.

What is the method of cleaning hard surfaces with water?
Although there is no prohibition in cleaning a hard surface and rubbing it with water, it is prohibited to wet a cloth or squeeze liquid out of
a cloth or paper towel. Therefore, the method of cleaning soiled or sticky surfaces (including a kitchen counter, table, eyeglasses etc.) is to
apply water to the soiled/sticky area and then wipe the water off using a dry paper napkin.
Is it permissible to clean soft plastic such as a tablecloth?
Cleaning soft plastic may involve laundering when rubbing is done vigorously. Therefore, one may not rub water vigorously on a plastic
tablecloth to clean it.
What is the proper method of wiping a spill of water?
It is prohibited to wipe a large spill of water by using a garment that does not usually become wet, since there is concern that one will
squeeze the garment to remove the water. However, it is permissible to use a rag or a towel that one would not be concerned if it were to
remain wet, and would therefore not be inclined to squeeze it dry; in this case, the use of paper towel is preferable to a rag or towel when
feasible. One must always be careful not to squeeze out any water while wiping a spill.
Washcloths designated for cleaning are Muktze and may only be moved for their use or use of their place.
Is it permissible to use glass or counter spray?
One should not spray a substance for the purpose of shining glass or a counter. Spraying for the sole purpose of cleaning is permitted.
If a colored liquid spilled (e.g. orange juice, grape juice, or colored ices), is it permissible to wipe the spill?
It is best to wipe up spills such as these with rags or paper towels, rather than with fabric towels to avoid a question of the prohibition of
dyeing (Tzoveya).1 If these items are not available, a towel may be used. It is preferable to use a white or light-colored towel that will
become stained in the process, rather than a colored one whose color will get deepened.1
Mesivta Testing & Applications have begun
This past Sunday, our eighth graders reached a key
milestone in the transition from elementary school boys to
מתיבתא בחוריםbochurim. They took the first part of their מתיבתא
entrance בחינה, administered by the מתיבתא מנהל, Rabbi Yaakov
Choueka . Their Rebbeim looked on with pride, as תלמידים
answered the questions posed with enthusiasm and details that
were truly impressive.
On Tuesday evening, members of our מתיבתא הנהלהand
staff held an open house to inform parents firsthand about the
current initiatives and innovations in our מתיבתא. The parents of
our eighth grade תלמידיםwere joined by many neighborhood
parents of eighth graders in other Yeshivos . This was a standing-
room only crowd and the enthusiasm among the parents
regarding Torah Temimah’s Mesivta was extraordinary.
We thank the Goldshmied’s for once again opening their
home for this important meeting.
