winter does not wane. In every classroom and at every level our Rabbeim
and teachers continue to make the lessons of the פרשהand the לימודים
come alive with creativity and שמחה. We are gratified to witness our
talmidim continue to make great strides in their development as בני תורה.

Lessons From the Parsha…

As אברהם אבינוwas on the way to the מקום העקידה, he turned to Eliezer and Yishmoel and told them: "שבו
"לכם פה עם החמור ואני והנער נלכה עד כה. Wait here with the donkey, while I and the child will go until ""כה. What is
?כהThroughout תנ"ך, the word כהis literally used in conjunction with the special connection between Bnei Yisroel
and 'ה. From the original " "כה יהיה זרעךto ""כה תברכו את בני ישראל, to the preamble to most "כה אמר ה'" – נבואות
this מדהrepresents Hashem’s love and guidance for us. Not insignificantly, our declaration of acceptance of
Hashem’s sovereignty – the פסוקof שמע ישראלcontains 25 letters which is the ' גמטריof כה. And at times when we
find it difficult to sense Hashem’s presence we utter the time worn lament of ""איכה, which is a contraction of the
words – אי כהWhere is the ?כהWhere is that special closeness between us and our ?אבינו שבשמיםThis relationship
is something we inherited from our אבות הקדושיםand was achieved in its fullest at the moment of the עקידה. At that
time, as אברהםreached the principal of his עבודה, the culmination of his עשרה נסיונות, ' הwas able to declare "עתה
"ידעתי כי ירא אלקים אני. Our relationship is perfect, you withheld nothing from me. This is what אברהםmeant when
he said ""אני והנער נלכה עד כה. My son and I are on our way to achieve the level of כה, the unbreakable connection
with ' הwhich we will pass on to our descendants forever.
There is an important lesson to us from the formulation of this פסוק. As אברהםprepared himself and יצחקfor
this momentous step, he prefaced it with instruction to Eliezer and Yishmoel. ""שבו לכם פה עד החמור. You wait here
with the donkey.
As we raise our children to appreciate and live up to their status as Bnei Torah, there are times that we have
to demonstrate to them that we are special. We don’t was associated with just anybody. What’s good enough for
the man on the street is not okay for us. We have a job to do, places to go, מדרגותto reach and ideals to represent.
We must be willing to look at the " – "חמריותthe influences in our lives and say, “You remain with the donkey. My
son and I will ascend.”
May we be זוכהto raise our children to the highest levels of 'דביקות & ידיעות ה.

A person drank wine or grape juice from a cup and left some over. Is it permissible for someone else to use the
remainder for Kiddush or Havdalah?
The liquid remaining in a cup that has been drunk from is considered “pagum” (damaged). In order to re-qualify it for
Kiddush, it is preferable that a small amount of wine or water should be added to the cup, and the entire cup poured
back into the original bottle.1 Bidieved, even just one of the above actions (adding wine or water or pouring the wine
back into the bottle) is enough.
Additional notes pertaining to Kavod and Oneg Shabbos
Seuda. The Shabbos table should preferably be set prior to the onset of Shabbos, and prior to the arrival home from
Shul on Shabbos morning. Kiddush should be made shortly after davening on Shabbos night in order to be mekadesh
Shabbos as close to its onset as possible; one may wait to increase one’s appetite. The Seuda should immediately follow
Kiddush. The Mishna Brura writes that one should learn prior to the morning seuda.
Neiros.. The candles should be lit in the place where they will remain and should be moved to another location only in
the case of necessity. In all cases, the candles should be lit in a room that will be in use on Shabbos. It is preferable
for the husband to prepare the Shabbos candles.
Kiddush, Havdalla. If one recites Kiddush for others and he himself has already been yotzai the Hagafen (either by
his own Kiddush or another’s) and has not yet recited the bracha achrona, someone who is being yotzai with this
Hagafen should drink some wine/grape juice. Wine is preferable to grape juice for Kiddush and Havdalla. Whether
one’s minhag is to stand or sit during Kiddush, the drinking of the kos should be done while sitting. During Kiddush
and Havdalla the kos should be held in the right hand; it should be switched to the left hand during the bracha of “Borei
Minei Besamim” so that the besamim can be held in the right hand.
