Lessons From the Parsha…

We read in ‫ ּפרק ד משנה א‬,‫ּפרקי אבות‬, .‫" ֶּבן זֹו ָמא אֹו ֵמר ֵאיֶּזהּו ָח ָכם? ַהלֹו ֵמד ִמ ָכל ָאָדם‬
‫ ֶּשֶּנ ֱא ַמר ִמ ָכל ְמ ַל ְמַדי ִה ְש ַכ ְל ִתי‬--‫ בן זומא‬says: Who is wise? He who learns from every person. As
it says: 'From all my teachers I grew wise' " )‫צ"ט‬:‫(תהלים קיט‬. In this ‫משנה‬, ‫ ֶּב ֶֶּן זֹו ָמא‬teaches
us the true definition of wisdom. It is not merely one's knowledge or intellectual status, but
rather his constant search for knowledge, which defines a true ‫חכם‬.

As simple as this teaching sounds, it is often difficult to implement. One who
feels he has reached a certain level of maturity and understanding may find it difficult to
admit that he can learn something from someone who is far below his own level of
knowledge. Yet truly great people, who have a constant thirst for truth and knowledge, will
learn from anyone--even from young children.

One ‫ שבת‬afternoon, after he had finished eating the ‫שבת סעודה‬, the Tshebiner
Rav (R' Dov Berish Weidenfeld, 1879-1965) went to lie down for a little while. He had been
resting only a short time when he heard a knock at the door. He decided to disregard it
because he was truly exhausted. But the knocking persisted.

He thought to himself, "Maybe it is an emergency. Whoever is there is not going
away. Perhaps I should get up to see who it is." And so, as tired as he was, he got out of
bed and went to the door. When he opened it, he saw that it was a little nine-year-old boy
holding a ‫גמרא‬. (Most areas in ‫ ירושלים‬are within the confines an ‫עירוב‬, thus allowing the
child to carry on ‫שבת‬.)

"‫גוט שבת‬," the ‫ רב‬said. "What is it that you want?" The little boy looked up at this
great ‫ תלמיד חכם‬and said, "I just finished learning ‫( המפקיד‬the third ‫ ּפרק‬in ‫מסכת בבא‬
‫)מציעא‬, and I would like the ‫ רב‬to give me a farher (test)."

The elderly ‫ רב‬asked the boy to come in, and sat down with him at the dining
room table. "My child, I will listen to you say the ‫גמרא‬," said the ‫רב‬, "but I would just like to
explain something to you first. If you come to a ‫'רב‬s house on a ‫ שבת‬afternoon, and you
knock on the door and there is no answer, and you knock again and still there is no
answer, then you have to think that perhaps the ‫ רב‬may have been somewhat tired and
went to rest for a little while."

The little boy's face turned pale as he looked up at the Tshebiner ‫ רב‬and said, with
purity and innocence, "I never thought that a ‫ רב‬sleeps on ‫שבת‬."

In the child's mind, a man as holy as a ‫ רב‬would, on a ‫ שבת‬afternoon, either be
studying ‫ תורה‬or busy answering people's ‫( שאלות‬religious questions). Sleeping on ‫ שבת‬was for
mere mortals, not ‫רבנים‬.

The Tshebiner ‫ רב‬was so taken aback by this child's perception of a ‫רב‬, that from
then on he never again slept on ‫ שבת‬afternoon!

Is it permissible to position a cabinet door handle guard in place or to
remove an existing one, if it generally remains in place for a long period TREATS!

cabinet door on Shabbos.
Is it permissible to allow an automatic sprinkler to water the lawn on
Shabbos?
This is permissible. However, to prevent a zilzul of Shabbos it is preferable
to have the sprinkler system’s automatic clock switch on the sprinkler
during the very late nighttime or very early in the morning, when there are
few or no passersby and it will not be seen.
Is it permissible for a non-Jewish babysitter take a child for a walk in a
carriage outside an eruv?
A child should not be taken for a walk in a carriage outside an eruv, even by
a non-Jewish babysitter.
Is it permissible to take Tums on Shabbos?
It is not permissible to take Tums for heartburn. It is permissible to take
Tums as a preventive measure to avoid the occurrence of heartburn,
provided that a forthcoming heartburn is not assured.
Note: Eating five almonds has the same effect as eating a Tums, and they
are permitted to be eaten for heartburn.

‫ ב"ה‬the talmidim are really ‫ שטייגינג‬from day to day. At
this point we are about to complete ‫פרשת תולדות – ויצא‬
and planning a double ‫ סיום‬next week Monday ‫אי"ה‬. It is
such a ‫ נחת‬to see the great accomplishments of the year.

We took a trip this week to the Living Torah
Museum. We also had our Chinese Auction

on ‫ראש חודש תמוז‬.

We had a beautiful ‫ סיום‬and outing to celebrate the
completion of ‫ מסכת ברכות‬and ‫פרשת וארא‬. Thank you to

STEINWURZEL We completed ‫ פרשת וארא‬and are planning a ‫ סיום‬for next
week upon our finishing ‫מסכת ברכות‬. Many boys tested
‫ ! מזל טוב‬We finished ‫ פ' שמיני‬and this week on ‫ !משניות בעל פה‬Some have said more than
had a great ‫סיום‬. We anticipated half of the ‫ מסכת‬by heart with the ‫ טייטש‬of each ‫משנה‬.
‫ אי"ה‬next week to finish '‫משניות מס‬
‫ יומא‬and ‫ פ' תזריע & אחרי מות‬and Chumash award certificates and prizes were distributed to
also to finish ‫ ספר יהושע‬in ‫נביא‬. We
those boys who excelled on our cumulative test.
