share our precious ‫ מסורה‬in the spirit of ‫בכל יום יהיו בעיניך כחדשות‬. With INSIDE:
creativity, innovation and overflowing ‫ אהבת התורה‬the ‫ תלמידים‬are imbued

EVENT
The Yeshiva and administration is encouraged by the eager spirit of
‫ נעשה ונשמע‬displayed by our parents as OUR DINNER campaign gets into full ‫שחרית מנין‬
swing. At our kickoff event this week, the attendees reaffirmed their
commitment to the ‫ חינוך‬of their children and the success of the yeshiva as
active partners in our endeavors. To join this group, please call Rabbi Lieberman

Lessons From the Parsha…

“You shall not oppress any widow or orphan” By: HaRav Yitzchok Steinbeg

)‫ כא‬.‫"כָּל ַא ְל ָמָנה ְוָיתוֹם לֹא ְת ַענּוּן" (כב‬

The Talmidim of Rav Yisrael Salanter noted that his yartzeit, ‫כ"ה שבט‬, always falls out during the week

of Parshas Mishpotim (This year on Thursday). They took this as symbolic of their Rebbi’s constant emphasis on

the way in which we deal with other people.

There is a famous incident told over about Rav Yisrael Salanter. One year, before Pesach, he had to travel

away from the city. His Talmidim, who thus had to assume the responsibility of the baking of the Matzos, asked him

as to what, in particular, they must be careful with in regard to the baking. He instructed them not to yell at the

women kneading the dough, for most often they are ‫אלמנות‬, widows, whom the Torah forbids us to oppress. He

then remarked: Matzos don’t become ‫ כשר למהדרין‬merely by following the rules of Hilchos Pesach. One must be

careful as well in the laws of how we go about dealing with others!

What is the proper method of peeling fresh fruits and vegetables on Shabbos?

Fresh fruits and vegetables are subject to the prohibition of sorting (Borer) whether the peels are edible or not, and may therefore
only be peeled immediately prior to eating. This applies whether the peel is edible (e.g. an apple) or not (e.g. an orange). If the
peeled fruit will be used for a Shabbos meal, it may be peeled before the meal in the time frame necessary for the meal’s
preparation.
Note: The use of a peeler on Shabbos is a machlokes; one should consult one’s Rav.
Is it permissible to remove seeds from fruits or vegetables?
Seeds of a cantaloupe or similar melons are considered the same as a peel and may be removed immediately prior to eating, or
immediately prior to the meal in which it will be served (within the time frame of the meal preparation). If one intends to serve or
eat only half the melon or use it for a design, one may not remove the seeds or peel from the second half.
The leniency allowing the peeling of fruits/vegetables is because peeling is the way to reach the inner fruit. The pit of a peach or
similar fruit (e.g. apricot, nectarine) should preferably not be removed even prior to eating, since the common way to eat these fruits
is to bite the fruit around the pit without removing it. Therefore, according to some Poskim this type of pit is not considered a peel,
and the leniency of a peel which permits taking the ‘bad’ from the ‘good’ would not apply. If one wishes to separate the fruit from
the pit prior to eating, the fruit should preferably be cut away from the pit rather than the pit from the fruit.
Is it permissible to remove a candy wrapper or other food wrappers?

A wrapper that is stuck to a candy is considered like a peel, and may only be removed immediately prior to eating. If the wrapper is
not stuck onto the candy, it may be removed at any time. This ruling applies to all food packaging which the wrapper is stuck to the
food. For example, the paper between slices of cheese, the paper encasing a roll of kishka, a cupcake holder, or if a piece of
aluminum foil became stuck to challah, they may only be removed immediately prior to eating or within the preparation time
needed before the meal in which it will be served.

special song in conjunction with our ‫ משכן‬project.
