Dear Parents,
For more than a יובל, Torah Temimah has proven to have חינוך הבניםdown to a “science”. The “formula” for satisfied
accomplished בני תורהhas been “invented” בכותלי ישיבתנו.
Our Science Fair was an informative and interactive event. We can appreciate the positive “energy” of parent-son
interactions in preparation of the creative projects. Thank you Rabbi Pearl and Rabbi Silver for arranging and coordination the
Science Fair. Thank you Mr. Berman, building manager who practically “at the speed of light” transformed our lunch room.
Congratulations to this week’s PET Project Winners. They are surely מתלמידיו של אברהם אביו. Wishing you נחתfrom
our talmidim and may we see the fulfillment of וצויתי את ברכתו.

Lessons From the Parsha…
By: HaRav Elozer Yosef Silver
פרשת בהרbegins with the of שמיטה. The פסוקpoints out that these laws were said on
הר סיני. רש"יasks “” - what is the relationship between the laws of
שמיטהand הר סיני. רש"יanswers, that just as these laws were said on הר סיני, so too all of the
laws of the Torah were said on הר סיני. Rav Moshe Feinstein זצ"לexplains, surely the פסוקis
not only discussing the מצוותwhich were said specifically on הר סיניbut even things, like
Shabbos and , that were commanded before הר סיני. How are they included if
they were said before? Rav Moshe explains, although the original command was earlier, still
our obligation is to fulfill the command because of that which it was commanded on הר סיני.
The רמב"םin Hilchos Melachim (8;11) takes this a step further, even בני נחmust fulfill their
seven commands because they were commanded to Moshe at הר סיני.
Why should it make any difference whether one is fulfilling this because of what
was commanded from Moshe at הר סיניor from Hashem before that, either way it is from
Hashem? Rav Moshe explains that there is a major difference. The original command was to
fulfill these laws out of the understanding that this is the proper way to live and function in
society, not because Hashem commanded it. This approach does not fester continuity, as we
find that although had a Yeshiva, we don't find great generations of people coming
from them. So too Avraham made many converts to ' אמונת הand yet only from the children of
the אבותwas כלל ישראלformed! The reason for this, explains Rav Moshe, is that people don't
understand reasons of laws similarly from generation to generation, and therefore, once their
personal desires are taken into account, they find reasons why certain rules don't apply to them.
By הר סיניwe were commanded that we must keep the מצוותonly because ' הcommanded
them to Moshe at הר סיני. There are no loopholes. Each Mitzvah must be fulfilled because this
is what Hashem said, and it does not change. The Mitzvah of שמיטהis a מצוהwithout a
reason. How can a person leave their field without work every seventh year? Furthermore, one
also lets anyone come in and take whatever produce which does grow. If one keeps this it is
only because the person understands that this is what Hashem said, and therefore there is no
discussion .
With this understanding we can better understand the connection between פרשיות
בהר ובחקתיand פרשת בחקותיbegins, “- if you will go
in my חוקים, laws which have no reason ... I will give the rains at their proper times. The
proper fulfillment of the מצוותare shown when we fulfill specifically the חוקים. This shows
that we are doing the מצוותspecifically because Hashem commanded and as such merit his
ברכה. May we keep all the מצוותbecause of the understanding that Hashem commanded them
at הר סיניand merit the wonderful ברכותpromised.

If a cup of coffee or tea cooled off, is it permissible to add hot water to make it hot again?
If the coffee or tea contains any ingredients that were not precooked (such as saccharin or
Splenda), then one should not add an amount of hot water directly from an urn that will cause
the cooled drink to become heated. Furthermore, since there are Poskim who are stringent even
in the case of precooked ingredients, it is preferable to refrain from adding hot water directly
from an urn to any cool drink, even if the drink was previously cooked directly from an urn.
Rather, the hot water should be poured from the urn into an empty cup, and from there into the
cooled drink.
If a bowl of soup or cholent has cooled, is it permissible to pour the contents back into the
pot of hot soup or cholent?
There are a number of points to bear in mind:
If the pot is on a heating element:
All foods, including solids or hot liquids, may not be returned to the pot
If the pot is not on a heating element:
Both solid foods and liquids that are still warm may be returned to the pot
Liquids that have cooled are subject to the prohibition of re-cooking. Therefore, it
is not permissible to pour soup that has completely cooled back into a hot pot.
Similarly, cholent that contains a significant amount of liquid should not be poured
back into a hot pot as well.
Is it permissible to blow a candy whistle?
It is not permissible to blow whistles; candy whistles are included in this prohibition.
Is it permissible to prepare the meal early enough to have time to go to shul or to meet
one’s husband walking home?
If the preparation includes any sorting, peeling, or cutting fruits/vegetables into small pieces, it
may only be done in the time frame necessary to be ready for the expected start time of the
meal. One may not plan on doing something else (such as walking to shul to accompany
someone home) after these preparations are done and before the meal begins.
Any food that will be eaten during the meal may be prepared prior to the meal; for example, one
may prepare dessert prior to the meal even though it will not be eaten for a few hours.
