As we approach the Shabbos before ‫שבועות‬, known as ‫שבת דרך ארץ‬, we are proud of our PET project participants. The

talmidim are approaching ‫ קבלת התורה‬with an increased awareness of appropriate and correct interactions ‫בין אדם לחבירו‬.

Thank you Rabbi Silver for this program, and many other initiatives beyond the regular classroom curriculum. We would like to
express our gratitude to the Rebbeim that give our talmidim the geshmak of ‫ לימוד התורה‬and ‫ מדות טובות‬on a daily basis. They
are partnering in our goal to inculcate our talmidim with a true understanding of ‫טוב לי תורת פיך מאלפי זהב וכסף‬, as is
referenced in this week’s ‫ פרקי אבות‬.

Lessons From the Parsha…

When the ‫ בני ישראל‬arrived in ‫ מדבר סיני‬to receive the ‫ תורה‬the ‫פסוק‬
describes it by saying "‫ "ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר‬and the Yidden camped near the
mountain. ‫ רש"י‬comments on the fact that ‫ ויחן‬which is ‫– לשון יחיד‬and he camped-
is used by the ‫ פסוק‬to describe the camping of the ‫ בני ישראל‬as opposed to other
campings that the ‫ בני ישראל‬made that the ‫ פסוק‬describes them with the word
‫ ויחנו‬which is ‫ לשון רבים‬-and they camped . ‫ רש"י‬says the Torah changed its normal
way of describing the Yiddens’ campings to point out that this camping was
different than other campings in that the Yidden were ‫ – כאיש אחד בלב אחד‬as one
person with one heart i.e. getting along in peace and happiness.

We can explore this further and ask is the Torah just telling us that there
was an isolated incident of increased peace and harmony among all of the ‫ אידן‬or is
this connected in a deeper way to the giving of the Torah.

‫ מפרשים‬explain that not only is there a connection between the fact that
the ‫ אידן‬were at peace with each other and the giving of the Torah but the
existence of harmony among all of the the ‫ אידן‬was in fact a precondition to the
‫ אידן‬receiving the Torah. And that without this dynamic of unity among the ‫אידן‬
receiving the Torah would have been entirely impossible. This is because the ‫אידן‬
are different than other nations of the world in that in the other nations it is each
man for himself. The ‫ אידן‬are not this way. The ‫ אידן‬are in truth like one person
united in their firm and unwavering dedication to the service of '‫ ה‬. Lack of peace
between a man and his friend is antithetical to the fundamental makeup of the ‫אידן‬
–one man with one heart. Hashem wanted to give the ‫ אידן‬the Torah in their true
and most optimal state as which can only be when the ‫ אידן‬are getting along with
one another and are caring for each other unselfishly and graciously. When the
Yidden aren’t getting along with each other ‫ כלל ישראל‬does not exist in its true
form.

May '‫ ה‬help us to have the love and caring for each and every ‫ איד‬no
matter how unimportant or unlikable we may think he is . This way we can be ‫זוכה‬
to receive the Torah on the ‫ יום טוב‬of Shavuos "‫ "כאיש אחד בלב אחד‬.

Erev Yom Tov on Shabbos

When Erev Yom Tov is Shabbos, when should Seudas Shlishis be eaten?
It is preferable that the third meal be eaten before the end of the 9th hour of the day 1.
When Erev Yom Tov is Shabbos, when may one begin preparing for Yom Tov?
One may not begin preparations for Yom Tov until either “Vatodianu” is said in
Maariv or “Boruch Hamavdil bein kodesh l’kodesh” is said.
How may one prepare a candle for reciting “Borei Meorei Ha’aish” during
Havdala?
Some have the custom not to combine fires to make a torch when Motzai Shabbos
falls out on Yom Tov.
It is questionable if a candle may be lit merely for the purpose of having a torch for
“Borei Meorei Ha’aish”. One should consult their Rav if it is necessary.
When combining two flames for “Borei Meorei Ha’aish”, the wax and wicks should
be kept separate, and only the flames should touch.
Is it permissible to melt some wax on the bottom of candles so they will fit
tightly in their holders prior to candle lighting on the second day of Yom Tov?
No.

Is it permissible to place flowers into water on Yom Tov?
It is preferable to place flowers into water before Yom Tov. If one neglected to do so, it is
permissible to place the flowers into water that was prepared for them before Yom Tov. Note
that this only applies to flowers that have fully budded; if the flowers have not yet fully
budded, it is forbidden to place them or return them into water on Yom Tov.
This halacha applies to Shabbos as well. There is an additional leniency on Yom Tov which
allows one to add fresh water to the water that was prepared prior to Yom Tov.

‫ארץ קדמה לתורה‬, the class completed a 4 week learned about ‫ אהבת התורה‬,‫התמדה בתורה‬
Middos Contest. Many new ideas and concepts ‫ & קבלת התורה‬along with ‫ מדרשים‬and ‫חז"ל‬
and stories of ‫גדולי ישראל‬. We learned part
were initiated and thousands of ‫ חסדים‬were
performed. The class performed beautifully. Prizes of the ‫ אקדמות‬which the talmidim sang
beautifully in it’s special ‫ניגון‬.

We enjoyed an inspiring Kumzitz. We celebrated our Siyum this week!

CHOCOLATE CRANBERRY COOKIES

3/4 cup oil
1 cup brown sugar

½ cup sugar
2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract
1 ¾ cup flour

1 tsp baking soda
Pinch kosher salt
1 ½ cups chocolate chunks
1 cup dried cranberries
Mix all ingredients. Refrigerate batter for 45 minutes.
Bake at 350 for 12-14 minutes.

DAIRY CHOCOLATE CHUNK COOKIES

3 pckgs chocolate chunks
2/3 cup butter
2/3 cup flour

½ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt

2 cups sugar
4 eggs at room temperature

2 cups chocolate chips
1 (3.5 oz) white chocolate chopped into small pieces

Melt chocolate chunks and butter. Let cool. Set aside.
Mix rest of ingredients. Add cooled melted chocolate.
Stir until blended. Stir in chocolate chips and chopped

white chocolate. Refrigerate batter for an hour.
Preheat oven to 350. Bake for 15 minutes.

Our Squanto celebration!! We completed the chapter book
Squanto! The boys worked in groups summarizing the story by
identifying the main events of the story and filling them into their
beautifully decorated sequence charts!! We then had an Indian
feast of animal (crackers) and corn with our very own Indian
headdress and tepee. Reading and understanding has taken on a

new dimension!
