Lessons From the Parsha…

:‫ ַוִּי ְׁש ַלח ִּי ְׁש ָר ֵאל ֶאת ְׁי ִּמינֹו ַוָי ֶשת ַעל רֹאש ֶא ְׁפ ַרִּים ְׁוהּוא ַה ָצ ִּעיר ְׁו ֶאת ְׁשמֹאלֹו ַעל רֹאש ְׁמַנ ֶשה ִּש ֵכל ֶאת ָי ָדיו ִּכי ְׁמַנ ֶשה ַה ְׁבכֹור‬:)‫ (יד‬,‫בראשית פרק מח‬

Many ask an obvious question, why did ‫ יעקב אבינו‬need to switch his arms in order to Bensch ‫ אפרים ומנשה‬placing his right hand
upon ‫‘ אפרים‬s head. He could have simply realigned the children so that ‫ אפרים‬truly was on his right, and Bensch them
normally?
Some suggest a politically correct answer. Don’t ever move the child. If need be modifying your own self to them. You shift
yourself, never adjust them. It sounds good, but as many of such notions it is so short sighted. Ultimately, how will the child on
the right feel when he sees himself so cunningly by-passed? Far worse, we would imagine.
Let’s see what our Gedolim of Old teach us. The Netziv of Volozhin writes: indeed, both ‫מנשה ואפרים‬, each child was blessed by
‫‘ יעקב אבינו‬s right. ‫ אפרים‬stood under his right arm, and ‫ מנשה‬remained staunchly all the while by his right leg, by his right side.
Each one would have his mission -his ‫ – תפקיד‬if you will, his purpose, his ‫עבודה‬. And each one would know that his Brochoh

from the ‫ אבות‬came from their right side, the aspect of Middas HaChesed, from the Birchas HaTorah of ‫מימינו אשדת למו‬.

In Yeshiva we always try. We always try discover the “right” aspect of each and every situation to place the Talmid just there.
No, a Talmid isn’t always right, but he always deserves to be on the “right” … on the right side of his parents … on the right
side of his Rebbi, and Gebensht by ‫ מימינו אשדת למו‬..

Is it permissible to straighten a paper clip or a hanger in order to use it for example to have a thin piece of metal to
pick a lock?
It is not permissible to straighten a paper clip or hanger to use it to pick a lock.

Is it permissible to replace the stick of a broom if it became detached from the brush on Shabbos?
It is not permissible to reattach the broom stick to the broom. In addition, it is prohibited to tighten the stick if it became
loose.1
The broom stick itself that has become detached is Muktze, as well as the brush itself (unless it was used without the stick
before Shabbos), since Chazal were concerned one may come to repair it.

Is it permissible to sharpen a knife?
It is not permissible to sharpen a knife.

Is it permissible to shine silver?
It is not permissible to shine silver even by merely wiping it with a shining cloth.

If a part of an object broke off on Shabbos (e.g. a wheel fell off a stroller or a handle fell off a knife), what is the
halacha?
In the case where it is possible for the object to be fixed in a permanent fashion, then both the object and the broken piece
(e.g. the stroller and the wheel, or the knife and the handle) are Muktze. The reason for this is that Chazal were concerned
that one may come to permanently fix an object that is not currently easy to use.

If the broken object (e.g. the stroller, knife) cannot be fixed by the owner, it is not Muktze (since there is no concern that one
will fix it). However, the piece that broke off and is currently unusable (e.g. the wheel, handle), is Muktze and should not be
handled. Additionally, using the examples of the stroller wheel and knife handle, if by reattaching the wheel or handle it will
still be loose and the fix will be temporary, then it may be put back on and the parts would not be considered Muktze.

If an armrest of a chair fell off, it may not be fixed on Shabbos. However, the chair is not Muktze since it has a regular
function without the armrest, and there is no concern that one will come to fix it on Shabbos.

Metzios, the hardest of them all! The boys have already
mastered the first 11, and are working diligently on this
one.
On a regular basis, we’ve been learning Shmiras HaLashon
from phenomenal sheets prepared by the Chofetz Chaim

Heritage Foundation. This week we had the honor of having
Rabbi Orenstein from the CCHF speak to us about the
importance of being careful with one’s words.
We also learned this week in Parshas Kedoshim about the

Issur of Shatnez. This was visually explained to is by a great film
from the Chicago Shatnez Lab.

We made edible cells as a great science review!
The boys asking their classmates their survey question and then transferring the

data into various graphs!
