Lessons From the Parsha…

)‫ ה‬.‫"ַו ִתּ ְשׁ ַלח ֶאת ֲא ָמ ָתהּ ַו ִתּ ָקּ ֶח ָה" (ב‬
‫ רש"י‬brings from ‫ חז"ל‬that '‫ בתי‬stretched out her hand in order to grab the basket in which Moshe was, and,
miraculously, her hand grew many ‫ אמות‬until she was able to reach it.
There was once a gathering of ‫ רבנים‬and ‫ כלל‬leaders in the city of Lublin, discussing an issue that dealt with
saving the lives of Yidden. An idea came up to solve the problem. One of the ‫ עסקנים‬declared that the idea
mentioned would be too difficult to carry out.
Rav Meir Shapiro protested emotionally: We find that '‫ בתי‬tried with all of her strength to reach the basket
of Moshe, until a ‫ נס‬happened and her arm stretched. The question arises: What was she thinking when she
stretched her arm out? How was she expecting to reach it? Was she really expecting a ‫ נס‬to happen?
What the ‫ פרשה‬here is teaching us, said Rav Meir Shapiro, is that whenever we have a lofty goal to reach, it is
up to us to put in every ounce of strength that we can muster in order to achieve that goal, even if it seems
unattainable to us. We have no right to give up! We must do our utmost, and then leave the rest to the ‫רבונו של‬
‫עולם‬.
We, too, said Rav Meir Shapiro, must try with all of our strength to succeed, and then, '‫בעזרת ה‬, we will!

Is it permissible to inflate items?
It is not permissible to blow up inflatable items (e.g. mattresses, inflatable couches etc.) for the first time on Shabbos. If
an item has already been inflated, it is permitted to re-inflate it provided that it is not done so permanently. Use of a
manual pump is permitted as well.
Is it permissible to assemble a new item?
It is not permissible to assemble a new item for first-time use (e.g. a toy that is sold unassembled).
Is Tevilas Keilim permitted on Shabbos?
A new utensil that definitely requires tevila should not be toiveled on Shabbos.
Is it permissible to move beds and furniture to another room on Shabbos?
Moving or transporting beds or any heavy furniture should be avoided on Shabbos unless it is necessary for
accommodating guests.
Is it permissible to replace the following items: a knob that fell off a door, a handle that fell off a drawer, or a
window handle that is used to crank open a window? Is it permissible to use the knob or handle to open and close
the door, drawer, or window?
One is not permitted to replace a doorknob or handle that fell off in a permanent fashion. Merely tightening it is not
permissible as well. If the knob or handle fell off before Shabbos and there was intention before Shabbos to use the knob
or handle in a temporary fashion without repairing it, it is permissible to do so. In the absence of prior intention, the
broken knob/handle is Muktze.

‫לשון התורה‬. We are focusing on the ‫ מדה‬of ‫סבלנות‬.

interesting stories about how ‫גדולי ישראל‬
excelled in the ‫ מדה‬of ‫ רחמנות‬even in their

youth.

We just began ‫פרשת תצוה‬. We are now
looking forward to our ‫ משכן‬projects to display Special treats from Rabbi
