the culmination of their mastery of ‫ קריאה‬and the beginning of ‫חומש‬. Noteworthy is their knowledge of
the proper rules and their fluency. We thank our P1A Rebbe, Rabbi Rapaport for teaching these lifelong
skills with such ‫געשמאק‬. It is a pleasure to hear them daven and recite ‫תהילים‬. May our ‫ תלמידים‬go ‫מחיל‬
‫אל חיל‬.

Lessons From the Parsha… ‫פ' שלח‬

The central story of this week’s ‫ פרשה‬is, of course, the story of the
‫ מרגלים‬the twelve spies sent by ‫ משה רבינו‬to bring him a report about ‫ארץ‬
‫ישראל‬.

The ‫ תורה‬describes all the ‫ מרגלים‬as great people. Yet, they sinned.
They returned to ‫ כלל ישראל‬with a bad report, and caused the Yidden to
refuse to go to the ‫ הייליגע‬land.

How could such great people bring about such a terrible tragedy?
The Chofetz Chaim clarifies the situation for us. The ‫ מרגלים‬knew
that '‫ ה‬had promised ‫ ארץ ישראל‬to the Yidden. But they thought that the
Yidden must be deserving so that ‫ ה'ס‬promise be fulfilled.
Because the Yidden had sinned many times in the ‫מדבר‬, the ‫מרגלים‬
thought that the Jewish nation was not on the level needed for ‫ה'ס‬
promise to be fulfilled. And if that is the case, it would be better that they
stay in the desert, rather than enter ‫ארץ ישראל‬. Better to be alive in the
‫מדבר‬, than to enter the land and be slaughtered by its inhabitants.
Therefore, they spoke badly of ‫ארץ ישראל‬, hoping the YIdden would refuse
to go. And that is exactly what happened.
But they were all wrong.
True, perhaps the Yidden were not deserving.
But '‫ ה‬is ‫ – רב חסד‬full of loving kindness.
He will grant them ‫ארץ ישראל‬, as He had promised, even if they
don’t deserve it.
Even when people are weak in some area of ‫אידישקייט‬, Hashem will
give them opportunities to improve. He will continue to treat us all with His
loving-kindness and give us a chance to improve ourselves. We should
never despair; never give up hope. For '‫ ה‬is with us all the way.

Is it permissible to stay in a hotel on Shabbos that has an energy saving system utilizing sensors?
Many hotels have energy saving systems that utilize sensors to switch on the air conditioner,
lights and other electronics upon the entrance of a person into the room, which the person
entering the room may not be aware of. It would be prohibited to enter a room equipped with
this type of sensor on Shabbos unless the system is turned off.
Is it permissible to receive an item from a non-Jew, or give an item to a non-Jew, in an area that
is not enclosed in an eruv?
If a non-Jew brings an item to one’s home on Shabbos, the item may not be taken directly from
the non-Jew. Rather, the item should be put down by the non-Jew. In addition, one should
specifically have in mind not to be koneh the item until after Shabbos.
If a non-Jew is in your home, it is forbidden to hand an item to him, or to even place an item in
front of him, if he will take it outside an area enclosed by an eruv. One may give a non-Jew an
amount of food that he would normally eat, even if he may decide to take it outside. In the
situation where the non-Jew would become offended or upset, it is permissible to place the item
in front of him, but one should refrain from actually handing the item to him.
When holding an item in one’s hand while in a private domain, one may not extend the item into
a public domain (or vice versa, from a public domain into a private domain) even if one does not
put the item down.
Notes regarding to Shabbos clothing: Clothing worn on Shabbos should be freshly laundered.
Therefore, one should not wear the same shirt for a number Shabbosim in succession without
laundering, or on multiple days of Yom Tov if the clothing aren’t still clean. Poskim write that one
should refrain from wearing Shabbos clothes on an ordinary weekday, since this detracts from the
honor of Shabbos.

‫שרשים‬. We also reviewed ‫ אותיות השימוש‬prefixes and suffixes. enjoying the ‫ שמיטה‬booklet created by Rabbi
We discussed about refraining from ‫לשון הרע‬, always thinking
Shimon Grama. We are looking forward to
