Dear Parents עמו"ש,
What an amazing week at Torah Temimah. Despite the wet and dreary פרשת אמור
weather, inside the mood was upbeat and cheerful. With energetic learning so many 7:49 זמן הדלקת נרות
exciting projects going on, the air is suffused with feelings of accomplishment. Our
preschool is busily getting ready for their graduations and קבלת חומשand our eighth
and 12th Grade graduation plans are being finalized. The approach of the Regents and
Finals add a level of serious study to the לימודי חולdepartment.
The parenting workshop this week was once again enjoyed by all and we were INSIDE:
all proud to learn about the special mention our Yeshiva received at the Torah
Umesorah convention last week.
Wishing you a good Shabbos. PARENTING

Making Our Days Count
ְת ִמימֹת ִת ְהֶּייָנה--and you shall count for yourselves from the day after Shabbos, seven complete weeks it shall be." (טו:)ויקרא כג
Rav Shlomo Yosef Zevin זצ"לwrites that when one counts something, it shows that he feels the object is special. For
example, Hashem counted בני ישראלseveral times because of His love for them. Similarly, we are commanded to count the days
between פסחand שבועות. This teaches us that we should treasure each and every day of our lives, for each is an opportunity to
fulfill the מצוותof Hashem and learn תורה. Time is precious. Once it passes, it can never be brought back.
Rav Zevin also notes that the תורהspecifically says, "וספרתם לכם--you should count for yourselves." When one counts
something that belongs to him, for example money, he does so with excitement. This is not so when he counts something that
belongs to someone else. We should show that we value the special gift of life which Hashem has given us, by
dedicating our days to His service. We should be sure during ספירת העמרthat we not only count our days, but also
that we make every day count.

What is the proper method of selecting a shirt from a pile of shirts or from a closet filled with shirts?
If the pile or closet includes shirts that are not wearable (i.e. they are not the correct size, they are missing buttons or are
stained) then the person selecting the shirt should preferably first determine if the shirt is a good choice before removing it
from the pile or closet. This is in contrast to randomly removing a shirt and then inspecting it. Moreover, selecting an
appropriate shirt may only be done immediately prior to wearing it.
This method of selection applies to all garments (not only shirts) and items that are combined in a mixture, when the mixture
includes unusable garments or items. In all situations such as this, a usable garment/item should preferably be identified before
removing it from the mixture and immediately prior to its use.
If a mixture of peanuts and shells and/or skins is piled together, is it permissible to blow on the pile so that the
shells/skins will separate from the pile and only the peanuts will remain?
No, this is not permissible.
What is the proper method of separating liquids from solids?
Large-sized solids immersed in liquid (such as pickles in water) are not considered a mixture and may be separated. However,
small-sized items (such as noodles in soup, corn tidbits in a can with liquid, or liquid in cholent) are considered a mixture.
Therefore, if the liquid is not desired it may not be removed. Rather, one may pour out part of the liquid, leaving the solids
with some remaining liquid. Alternatively, one may pour out liquid together with some of the solid pieces.
Is it permissible to drain the liquid from a salad with one’s spoon while eating?
One eating salad may not drain the liquid accumulated in the spoon by placing the spoon against the bowl, unless some liquid
is left inside the spoon. This would also apply if one wishes to eat vegetables from soup without the liquid. One should
therefore refrain from eating with a slotted spoon in these situations, since all the juice will inevitably be drained out.
This week’s workshop was once again a resounding success, as a sizeable crowd enjoyed the dynamic
and practical חינוךand parenting session. Our very own Rabbi Chanoch Posy opened the evening with
דברי פתיחהcentered on the personal connection of שבת. He was followed by Rabbi Shlomo Goldberg,
who delivered a riveting presentation on the importance of setting limits with love.
The atmosphere was once again suffused with positivity and enthusiasm. Parents wanted to be there,
and were delighted to spend time together with their sons’ Rabbeim. There was a feeling of –אחדותthe
Yeshiva, the Rebbeim, and the parents collaborating, working together toward a common goal. This
event was a testament our wonderful parent body – a sentiment echoed by the featured speakers and
the delegation from Torah Umesorah.

This week we experimented with
“Rattlesnake Eggs!” Now these
“rattlesnake eggs” were merely a rubber
band energy motor attached to a washer
and metal stick. The rubber band was
twisted which created potential energy
and when let go was released into kinetic
energy which created a loud rattlesnake
sound since it banged against the envelope
it was in. The students learned about the
different types of energy all while jumping
back after opening the envelope to
discover that this rattlesnake was made of
metal and rubber.
