Lessons From the Parsha…

By: HaRav Elozor Yosef Silver

In ,  were told about the  which sustained them for forty years in the . The  tells us" ‫ַו ִי ְל ְקטּו אֹותֹו‬
‫ " ַבבֹּ ֶקר ַבבֹּ ֶקר‬--and they gathered it every morning." () The  in  asks, why didn't  make the  fall
once a year? Why did  have to go collect the  each morning?

The  answers that this can be compared to a king who gave his son all that he needed once a year. The son therefore found no
reason to come visit his father, and he would only come once a year, when he needed food. The king then began to give his son only enough
food to last one day. From then on, his son came to visit each and every day.

Similarly, when were in the , they would go to sleep every night with nothing to eat in their tents. They could have
worried that they would starve, but they had that  would send the  again the next morning. In this way,  was sure that 
would not forget Him for even one day. For each night, as they went to sleep without any leftover food, they would think about the  which
 would send the next day, and their  would be further strengthened.

As long as  were in the , the served as a daily reminder that  was the One who provided for them each day.
However, from the time  entered until this very day, we have not had such an obvious reminder. Even so, any food that
we grow, or any money which we earn in order to buy our food, comes directly from . Although it is not as easy to remember this as it was
in the , we must constantly remind ourselves of this.

As we earn our money and enjoy our food, let us not forget the lesson of the . Let us remember that  is the One who sustains us,
and if we will put our full trust in  as  did in the , will He continue to sustain us.

Is it permissible to feed animals? ‫ – תפילה‬Don Yitzchok Mikhli
Animals may not be fed on Shabbos unless they are
owned by a Jew or the food is necessary for their ‫הר' זילבער‬
sustenance.1 Therefore, if one wishes to put out bread Moshe Dovid Farkas
for birds on “Shabbos Shira,” the bread should be put
out before Shabbos. ‫הר' לימון‬
Is it permissible to handle an outdoor garbage can? Zushe Rabinowitch
Garbage cans that contained garbage at the onset of
Shabbos are Muktze and may not be handled even if the ‫ ברכות‬CONTEST
garbage was collected.
Is it permissible to look through garbage to find a Over 80 talmidim from

It is permissible to look through garbage to find a returning their
utensil. However, since this is an act of sorting it is only
permissible to remove the utensil from the garbage if it completed ‫ ברכות‬cards!
is taken out with the intention to immediately rinse it off
and use it. Additionally, since many objects in the
garbage are most likely Muktze, looking through the
garbage should be done with the use of a utensil or in a
backhanded fashion rather than by moving the garbage
with one’s hand.
Is it permissible to untie or rip open a knot of a tied
garbage bag to find an item that may have been
disposed of?
It is not permissible to untie a garbage bag that was tied
with a knot (prior to Shabbos) to look for an item that
may have been inadvertently disposed of. It is not even
permissible to tear the knot open without untying it.
Is it permissible to move a household garbage can on
Shabbos to bring it close to the table to facilitate
clearing off? Is it permissible to open a drawer
housing a garbage can?
In many instances a garbage can and garbage drawer are
Muktze and may not be handled since at the onset of
Shabbos they were a Bosis (base) for Muktze. To avoid
this problem, one should leave empty garbage bags at
the bottom of the can or drawer to prevent them from
becoming a Bosis.
