Lessons From the Parsha…

"Look heavenward and count the stars, if you are able to count them. And He said to him, "So will be your
children."
Rav Meir Shapiro miLublin , whose yartzeit was this week, says that the רבונו של עולםwas
portraying before Avraham Avinu one of the great virtues that his children, כלל ישראל, will possess:
Although you know that the stars are uncountable, you will still try to count them anyway. Why? Because
the רבונו של עולםasked you to! Avraham Avinu does not refuse any request as being ‘impossible’. Why
not? Because his will to please Hashem is so fierce, he will at least ‘try’. Only if, in the end, it will become
clear that he is incapable of accomplishing it, will he then discontinue.
The רבונו של עולםthus bentched him: " " ֹכּה ִי ְהֶיה ַזְר ֶעָך- Your children will be the same: They will
not measure their will by their ability, but rather their abilities will be measured by the extent of
their will. When you really want to accomplish something, you will find strengths and abilities that
you never knew existed within you. You will then surprise everyone, even yourself, by what you are
truly capable of doing!
This is a lesson for all of us. All too often, it is not that we ‘can’t’ do a Mitzvah. What is
lacking is the true will to do it, for when there is a ‘will’, there is a ‘way’.

If one is unsure whether he recited “Retzeh” on Shabbos or “Yaleh V’Yavo” on Yom Tov, should Bircas Hamazon be
repeated?
If one has concluded “bentching” on Shabbos and is unsure whether he recited “Retzeh”, Bircas Hamazon should be repeated since
it is not said habitually during the week and it is assumed that it was most likely forgotten.
However, if one generally does not wash for bread during the week but rather only on Shabbos, and is therefore accustomed to
recite “Retzeh” during “bentching” he should not repeat Bircas Hamazon, as it is assumed that he did remember.
On Yom Tov, if one is unsure whether “Yaleh V’Yavo” was recited, Bircas Hamazon should be repeated.
Notes:
The requirement to repeat Bircas Hamazon when “Retzeh” or “Yaleh V’Yavo” was omitted (even when one is unsure)
applies only to the first two seudos of Shabbos or Yom Tov. In the case of Shalosh Seudos or any additional meal, as well
as any meal on Rosh Chodesh, Chol Ha’Moed and Rosh HaShana, one is not required to repeat.
The above Halachos apply to men. Regarding women, it is questionable whether Bircas Hamazon should be repeated if
“Yaleh V’Yavo” was omitted on Yom Tov.
In all cases (both men and women, whenever “Retzeh” or “Yaleh V’Yavo” is recited) if one realizes his/her omission after
concluding the brocha of “BonehYerushalayim” and before the next brocha is begun, the brocha printed in siddurim
specifically for the omission of “Retzeh” or “Yaleh V’Yavo” should be recited.
If the mention of Shabbos or Yom Tov was forgotten while reciting “Al Hamichya” on either Shabbos or Yom Tov, the
brocha should not be repeated.
Additional notes regarding Bircas Hamazon:
The Mishna Brura writes that one should preferably recite Bircas Hamazon with a bencher.
During davening, “bentching” or the reciting of any brocha, one should not be within seven feet of a baby wearing a soiled
diaper, and one should not directly face the baby. One is not obligated to check if the diaper is soiled unless the baby is not
wearing any clothing covering the diaper; in that case, one should check prior to davening, “bentching” or reciting a
brocha. This halacha pertains to the diapers of babies over the age of three months, when children are capable of eating
grain.
