evening a resounding success. Our office is a hive of activity as our dedicated staff tends to
every detail of this massive event. Our dedicated fathers and mothers have been manning REBBE!
our Phones calling each fellow parent for their participation. Our talmidim are
enthusiastically practicing for the choir performance or enjoying the videotaped activities
for the feature presentation.

This will truly be OUR DINNER and is a celebration of our collective
accomplishments. It will be a personal pleasure to greet each and every parent. I am

Lessons From the Parsha…

In this week’s ‫ פרשת כי תשא‬we find twice the theme of giving, but in very different ways. First, ‫ בני ישראל‬are commanded to each give a ‫מחצית‬
‫ השקל‬when we are to be counted. “Don’t count the Yidden themselves,” ‫ הקב"ה‬tells ‫משה רבינו‬, as this will cause ‫עין הרע‬. Rather, ‫ונתנו איש כופר נפשו‬
)‫י"ב‬,‫ (שמות ל‬- let each person donate a half coin as an atonement for his ‫נשמה‬, and through counting these coins will the census be taken.

The ‫ בעל הטורים‬on this ‫ פסוק‬points out that the word ‫ ונתנו‬- and they should give, is a palindrome, meaning it can be read both forward and
backward. This is to teach us that giving of our own to ‫ צדקה‬doesn’t cause any loss at all. It all comes back. And if you take into consideration that the
giver receives a ‫ מצוה‬with ‫ שכר‬as well, then the final tally states - giving is really getting!

Yet later in the ‫ פרשה‬another act of giving takes place. When the ‫ עגל הזהב‬- golden calf is being formed, many Yidden step forward to give.
So hastily did they donate their jewelry that they literally ripped off their earrings without taking the time to open them, causing immense pain and
bleeding. For what? For a false illusion of what seemed right. All kinds of ‫ חשבונות‬and calculations were made to justify building this ‫עבודה זרה‬, and
truthfully their intentions were not evil. Yet they made one tragic mistake; If ‫ הקב"ה‬says NO, then no shtikel Torah can justify violating his command.
Being a true '‫ עבד ה‬means bending our will before His, no matter how right it may seem.

In our daily lives, we too are faced constantly with this same challenge. Should we use our hard earned dollars for ‫ צדקה‬and supporting ‫תורת‬
'‫ה‬, or do we squander it on all sorts of ‫ גשמיות‬which we convince ourselves are necessary for our health and well being, though in reality they are really
superfluous.
Sandwiched in the ‫ פרשה‬between these two ‘givings’ lies the ‫ מצוה‬of ‫קטורת‬. ‫ חז"ל‬tell us that the ‫ קטורת‬brought great wealth to the ‫ כהן‬who offered it.
Perhaps the lesson is that if we learn to give properly, fulfilling the will of '‫ה‬, then He will increase our wealth, giving us more opportunities to fulfill His
desire.

May we always merit to heed the call of ‫ מי לה' אלי‬and be from the givers, not the takers. But let us make sure that the type of giving we do is
of the ‫ ונתנו‬sort, that entitles us to be getting through our giving.
