Temimah that challenge is accepted with vigor as our talmidim in every grade are

Lessons From the Parsha…

‫ שבת חנוכה‬falls out when we lein ‫פרשת מקץ‬. The question is why is that? Let us analyze a little bit of
the story of Yosef to understand the connection. When Yosef was in jail, it looked like there was no hope
for him. He would be lost forever. But, really Hashem had already set the stage for ‫יציאת מצרים‬. From the
darkest point was really the beginning of the light to come. There is a famous vort from Rav Mottel
Pogramansky that the caravan that was taking Yosef to Mizrayim was carrying ‫ בשמים‬specifically to show
Yosef that ‫ הקב"ה‬still loves him and things will be good. During the times of the ‫יונים‬, the Yidden lived for
52 years under the harsh decrees of the ‫יונים‬. When ‫ מתתיהו‬and his sons started a revolt, we can imagine
the feeling of ‫כלל ישראל‬. They probably felt like things could only get worse. But, from that darkest time is
where the ‫ גאולה‬began. Consequently, we light the ‫ מנורה‬to prove this point. All we need is a little bit of
light to push away a lot of the darkness. We have been in ‫ גלות‬for 2,000 years amidst much ‫ צרות‬and
hardship. It looks like it can’t get worse. But, ‫ בעזהי"ת‬let us be ‫ זוכה‬to see how this as well is really the
beginning of the ‫גאולה העתידה‬.

Is it permissible to move a table or tray on Shabbos if a menorah is resting on it?
A table or tray on which menorah is resting may only be moved on Shabbos under certain conditions.

 The table or tray is not specifically designed for a menorah or candles
 Either an item of greater value than the menorah or an item that will be used on Shabbos had to have been placed on the table or tray

prior to Shabbos so that it is not considered a “bossis”.
 The intention to move the table or tray is only for the purpose of its place (i.e. not for the purpose of preventing the menorah from

falling)
Notes pertaining to Neiros Chanuka on Erev Shabbos:

 It is preferable to daven Mincha prior to before lighting the menorah if an earlier minyan is available.
 It is preferable to light the menorah shortly before being mekabel Shabbos.
 It is preferable for the one lighting the menorah as well as other family members to see the neiros Chanukah on leil Shabbos within the

first half hour after nightfall; they should therefore be seen prior to the seuda.
 Neiros Chanuka should be lit before neiros Shabbos; at a minimum, at least one ner of the Chanuka neiros should be lit before the neiros

Shabbbos.
Notes pertaining to neiros Chanuka on Motzai Shabbos:
There are differing minhagim whether neiros Chanuka should be lit on Motzai Shabbos before or after Havdala. The general minhag for anyone
who does not have a specific minhag is to recite Havdala first, followed by lighting neiros Chanuka. It is preferable that the neiros Chanuka be lit as
soon after Shabbos as possible, and certainly within one half hour of the conclusion of Shabbos.
If one is going away on any day of Chanuka or for Shabbos Chanuka, where should neiros Chanuka be lit?
Throughout Chanuka, if one will be eating a meal outside of one’s home, it is preferable to wait until one returns home to light neiros Chanuka. In
this case, one should set an alarm or appoint a shomer to be reminded to light upon his return home.
If one is going away for Shabbos, neiros Chanuka should be lit on Erev Shabbos in the home in which he will be staying. On Motzai Shabbos, if one
will not be home at the proper z’man of hadlakas neiros, he should light where he is. In this case, it is preferable to eat Melave Malka in the house in
which he lit to be yotzai other Poskim.
If one is going away for Shabbos and is sleeping in one house but eating the Seudos Shabbos in another, it is preferable to light neiros Chanuka in
the place where most of Shabbos will be spent (excluding eating and sleeping). One may light in either house as necessary.
General Halachos pertaining to Chanuka:

 According to the Mishna Brura, it is preferable to light neiros Chanuka in front of a window rather than the door inside the house so that
the neiros will be seen by passersby outside. However, if there is no window within twenty amos of people outside of ones home, or if the
window is blocked and not visible at all to passersby, the neiros should be lit by the door on the opposite side of the mezuzah.

 If one’s home features a glass door that is visible to the street, it is preferable to light there to accomplish both goals of having the neiros
seen from the outside as well as being placed by the door.

 It is questionable whether wax candles can be lit directly on a sheet of silver foil and not contained within a vessel; this should therefore
be avoided.

 According to minhag, women should refrain from performing melachos (those that are prohibited on Chol HaMoed) during z’man hadlaka
(the first half hour after the neiros are lit).

 In a situation where one cannot light neiros Chanukah (e.g. in a hospital or while on a necessary overnight flight), incandescent lights or
flashlights should be lit without a bracha.
