After 72 years of Independence,
Are we still free?

Ann mary cecil II Bcom CA

This question is a question of relevance nowadays. On looking back to the histo-
ry of India I came to the realization that India is not really free even after 72 years
of independence. We have our own government whom we elect and we are the
largest democratic country in the world. But are we experiencing that democracy
in our lives? Well no, we are not experiencing that democracy, people are selfish.
This selfishness makes them to do things for themselves and not for others, and when
that selfishness comes into political fields, people will not get any benefits; rather the
politicians will use people’s money for their own welfare or benefit.

The Constitution of India provides every Indian citizen with 6 basic
rights.

They are:
1. Right to freedom
2. Right to education
3. Right against exploitation
4. Right to equality
5. Right to freedom of religion
6. Right to constitutional remedies

All these things are only in papers, not in the real world. People in rural and urban
areas are in captivity from our own people. Right to equality? There is no equality,
the rich are becoming more richer and the poor people are becoming poorer.
There still prevails reservation system even from education to jobs.

We are free from a foreign rule, but not from ourselves. We are full of bitterness
towards other religion. People should never peck their nose into others freedom.
We are not free from communal taboos and terrorism. We don’t have complete
freedom of speech. India is free but Indians are in chains created by them. We are
really not independent; but it is not said:” The youth of today are future citizens of
tomorrow.” May the youth of today be able to provide freedom to citizens in its real
sense.

But they didn’t hear her cry…….!

She wanted to learn
And grow up to earn
But what can she do?
Since she was born a girl.
She never did want this
But knew better her silence for granted
And forced her to do their desire….

She had to keep quiet
And keep her mouth shut
And never go out
Cause she was born a girl….

She was forced to say inside
Knot up clothes or clean the dishes
While her brothers were out
Down the pane, flying kites….
But still, they say all are equal…

Door to SuccessShilpatonyIIIBscCS

Look around you. You see the physical world. If you
make a close observation, you can see so
many doors. These locked doors sepa-
rate you from another part of the world.
As you know, you will need a key or a com-
bination of keys to unlock these doors and then
you can reach where you want.

Now, look into yourself. You can see your life.
Your life also has so many doors. Locked behind
them are your dreams and goals. The door
to success has a five-combination lock.
It can be unlocked with a set of self-
made keys. That key combination
includes dedication, skills, atti-
tude, desire and positive atti-
tude without losing your de-
sire. Then, success is yours.

You, of course, have an
alternative; an alternative
to use a duplicate key. You
can use the key combination
of others and try to unlock the
doors to success. But you will
not succeed if you are cheat-
ing yourself as well as others. And
no one can cheat anyone for a
long time. Don’t apply pressure on the
door. If you do so, you will break the door and you will become an intruder. You will
not be accepted because you know where an intruder belongs to.

Life is yours. You have complete command over it. The doors might look like block-
ing your path to success, but actually, it is not. It safeguards what you need. There
are no shortcuts to success. The pure and uncompromising effort of yours can only
lead you to success.

When we were all busy with our own lives.
When we thought everything we had with us was not enough.
When we were divided by class, gender, religion and what not.
When we thought we were all INVINCIBLE.

We were hit by the biggest flood the state witnessed in the middle of august
2018, a result of the dams being opened accompanied with heavy rain, the water
bodies overflowed and the water level above land kept rising. Roads, Railways and
all means of transportation were disrupted. The water invaded our lands, NO! The
water took back their lands with force and Kerala drowned. The moment we felt our
lives were at stake or the people we love were in danger is when we realized how
vulnerable we truly are.

The floods washed away our homes, our possessions and also all our divisions.
The waters favored none it affected us all without taking our differences to regard.
When nature forgot our differences so did the people. The only purpose everyone
had was to save every single person possible. It didn’t matter who extended the
helping hand people reached out without second thoughts. Now I don’t know if it
is survival instincts or if these differences don’t really mean that much to people like
they claim to do but deep down I felt proud that even though it didn’t happen all
the time we were at least capable of coexisting.

The floods were more than just death and destruction, it proved to become a
wakeup call for many and to change the way they looked at their own lives. It put
us into different situations and helped us realize that we could survive together. It
taught us that life was beyond money and power. It showed us that god never
closed its doors for anyone. It helped us not to underestimate people for what they
do for a living. Most importantly helped to understand the people who really care
for us and those who pretend to, After all it is in the time of crisis when people show
their true self

When the waters broke our walls and bridged our gaps, is when Kerala truly be-

KERALA FLOODS
LESSONS LEARNED AND
UNLEARNED (EE 96 3RD)

LESSON FOR
A LIFETIME

ZIYADALI 1st BBA

August turned out to be disastrous in 2018 for Keralite. When the monsoons show-
ered against our favor, Kerala lost many lives to the roaring water. The state wit-
nessed the chaos created by the forces of nature. Although taken back by the
gravity of disaster, the state fought back bravely, instilling our confidence in human-
ity and brotherhood. The flood also was a wakeup call. A situation that showed the
true colors of many and the shortcoming of the current system.

Kerala, as well as the nation of India does not have a well-molded disaster man-
agement system. It is true that there are governmental agencies like fire and rescue
disaster response teams, meteorological department as well as the armed forces
to handle the situation. But to be honest, these agencies are ill-equipped and lacks
proper training. The problem here was that Kerala was never identified as a risk area
for floods. So, it can be said that we were “unprepared”. There needs to be a com-
prehensive policy on disaster management. There needs to be co-operation and
communication between different departments. The situation with Kerala was that
the security guidelines were decades old. The risk assessment reports were also out-
dated. That’s what made the situation out of control. We can’t control the forces of
nature. But, we can be prepared to meet the destructing side of it.

Another point of concern is illegal constructions. There can be two dimensions to this.
One is buildings that encroach on rivers and hinterland. Second is commercial and res-
idential constructions that does not conform to the safety guidelines issued by govern-
ment. Construction in high risk areas of landslide should be avoided. These illegal and
unscientific civil works tend to do more damage to property as well as life.

The masses came together to provide relief to those affected by floods. This is a
story of humanity and sense of empathy. The common people, the public, the bu-
reaucrats, the law makers all came down to help the needy forgetting their differ-
ences, casting away the shackles, of cast, creed and religion. They stepped up to
extend a helping hand. This is an example for all of us. This is the secular community
that our nation badly needs.

Kerala floods sure was a disaster of great proportions. Even being riddled by sev-
eral short comings, the people of Kerala reclaimed their land, fighting the wind and
water. This is the story that we shall pass on to the generations. These are the lessons
that we shall keep in mind in order to rebuild our state. The chorus shall sing –

proved by their family, having sex outside marriage, becoming the victim of rape,
dressing in ways which are deemed inappropriate, engaging in non-heterosexual
relations or renouncing a faith.

Honour killing started practising many years ago. Being an idiot seems squeamish.
Society and prejudice concepts are pathetic as they do not feed you, nurture you,
but kill every inch in you.

● Inter-caste marriages

The caste system in India prohibits marriage outside the caste. However, inter-caste
marriages have gradually gained acceptance due to increasing education, em-
ployment, middle-class economic background, and urbanization. According to a
survey in 2014, about 5% of marriages are inter-caste in India.

● Caste system

Caste is the segregation, where individual castes lived together, the dominant
caste living in the centre and other castes living on the periphery. Religion is de-
signed by some mere people who wanted the superior dominance of powers, and
economic mainstream and caste are designed by those idiots who wanted the
subdivided powers of dominance. The funny thing is that irrespective of this particu-
lar understanding, they have been practising the whole days and still misses that
dominance and powers held with the ancestors.

● Human sacrifice

Human sacrifice has been practised in various cultures throughout history. Victims
were typically ritually killed in a manner that was supposed to please or appease
gods, spirits or the deceased. Closely related practices found in some tribal societies
are cannibalism and headhunting.

● Men are superior to women

The concepts of superiority complexes such as thoughts of men are more intel-
ligent than women ceased to exist before, but they are not completely avoided.
Even now, a section of society treats the women fraternity on unequal terms, even
their rights and freedoms are denied. But today, the scenario has changed so the
men who hold those concepts should try to change their best to avoid their misper-
ceptions, as women can handle a family in a well-versed manner. Growing some
beard and moustache doesn’t make one a man.

● Apostasy sufferings

Apostasy is the formal disaffiliation from or abandonment or renunciation of a
religion by a person.

Greatness lies not in being strong, but in the right using of strength. We define
what we are by what we do.

● Honour killing

Honour killing or shame killing is the homicide of a member of a family, due to

to face any such disaster. She asked herself and to God, “why me?” What wrong
has she done? She helped and loved everyone. But this is how life turned out for her
and that too at a tender age. The spring time in her life seemed to end so abruptly
without any notice.

Finally, she decides to upload the values her parents taught her and the mem-
ories would be always with her. All the stories, they told her, all the hugs they gave
her, all the kisses. It’s them who have been taken away from the world. She believed
that their memories should live through her, that they themselves would live through
her. And she wanted to do at least that justice to her long lost family. Hence, she
decided to move on. Her distant relatives were reluctant to adopt her. So she lived
in an orphanage. She was financed by the profit she inherited from her father’s
business. However, the business itself stopped since there was no one to look after
and many of its assets were stolen by others. Oana didn’t bother to go behind it as
money mattered little to her. She got a little profit to help her build her life and she
would build it on her own.

Oana studied well and took up English literature as her major. She worked in small-
er companies first, finally ending up as lecturer in a reputed institution. She had a lot
of free time to write her ideas into paper. She wrote the stories her parents said. She
transferred the memories of her past: her spring time with her parents were she knew
no pain, her summer time in her life where her soul was dry and her mind was like
the burning rock under the scorching sun. She gave a new life to her family through
her writings. Whenever she wrote about her family, it was like living those old times
again, she felt like her family with her present around her. They were smiling! She
never felt done when she wrote about them. She could write a hundred stories were
she would bring some aspect of her life with them into it, some aspect of her parents
and brother.

Her writings became famous. She received many awards including Re Booker
Prize. She made new friends and well-wishers. She met a man, married and had chil-
dren. The saying became true in life, “what you sow shall you reap”. She sowed love
and pity to others, she received her right rewards. She had a season to sow and now
is her season to reap. She sowed her pain and reaped happiness in her later life. She
knew that just like a tree has a life and experiences seasons of spring, autumn, winter
and summer, she experienced all these. Finally the tree dies, so will she. Then, she will
be happily reunited with her long-lost family. She did justice to her family by keeping
them alive in her memories and writings. She published books in their names. The
world recognized her family. She would have made them proud, she thought. Even
little animals, birds and fishes experience seasons. During one, they would start off
with their parents. During another, they may be all alone in the wild. Then, they had
joyous seasons and made a family of their own. In the end, they all die. Seasons are
a part of every living and nonliving things life. There is no constant season for anyone
or anything.

SECOND FREEDOM

STRUGGLE
-Ajith Thomas II BCom CA

When India got political freedom on a fateful Friday of August 15, 1947, our an-
cestors had a dream of witnessing an emerging land full of opportunities for growth
and development; without barriers of ignorance, injustice, discrimination, suppres-
sion and illusion.

Initially, the euphoria of this new found freedom kept the countrymen mesmer-
ized for a couple of decades.

We have travelled a complete 71 years since then and yet the promise of the
‘tryst with destiny ‘, seems to elude the whole Indian society. I wonder whether it is
really the same land where Mahatma Gandhi lived.

Again we had to travel miles to build a great nation. To build up a developed na-
tion we all should ensure basic health and education to all our brothers and sisters
in their formative years. Dreams for a developed nation cannot be actualized on
drumbeats with a hollow framework for basic health and education in any country.

Any program for social transformation is incomplete without ensuring basic health
and education for all. But the irony is that despite huge monetary investment on
both these fronts. We are witnessing pathetic results in health as well as education.
