2021 INTERNATIONAL
ARTIST HONOREE
Simone Leigh

Simone Leigh’s practice incorporates sculpture, video, and
installation; all are informed by her ongoing exploration of
black female-identified subjectivity. Leigh works in a mode she
describes as auto-ethnographic. Her objects often employ ma-
terials and forms traditionally associated with African art; her
performance- influenced installations create spaces where his-
torical precedent and self-determination commingle. Through
her investigations of visual overlaps between cultures, time
periods, and geographies, she confronts and examines ideas
of the female body, race, beauty, and community.

“I feel like I’m a part of a larger group
of artists and thinkers who have
reached critical mass, and despite
the really horrific climate that we’ve
reached, it still doesn’t distract me
from the fact of how amazing it is to
be a Black artist right now.”

The Guerrilla Girls

The Guerrilla Girls are feminist activist artists. They wear gorilla masks
in public and use facts, humor and outrageous visuals to expose gender
and ethnic bias as well as corruption in politics, art, film, and pop
culture. Their anonymity keeps the focus on the issues, and away from
themselves. They believe in an intersectional feminism that fights
discrimination and supports human rights for all people and all
genders. Their new book The Art of Behaving Badly contains almost
all the Guerrilla Girls‘ work 1985-today.

During Recognition Week, The Guerrilla Girls will participate in both a
Critical Dialog program entitled Realization, Activation and Agitation
as well as an interactive Artist Lecture.
