“Kaliyattam" - A Report ON ANNUAL DAY Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Poochatty, Thrissur, celebrated its 43rd Annual Day "Kaliyattam", on the 10th of February 2023. The Guests of Honour were: the District Collector, Smt Haritha V Kumar, IAS (in absentia) and Guru Kalamandalam Kshemavathy. The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Thrissur City, Shri Sajeev KK was a special invitee. The other guests present were: the Honorary Secretary Sri KP Radhakrishnan, Vice-chairman Shri P Haridas Menon, Vice-chairman Shri N Venugopal and Associate Secretary Shri.V.Ramachandran, all from the Bhavans Thrissur Kendra. Smt Anila Mechur Jayachandran, Principal, KMBVM, Pottore, Mr Thomas K Joseph, former Principal BVBVM Poochatty, Dr.VP.Jayanandan, President PTA, Smt Meenakshi Venkataraman, Secretary, BHAWAN, Bhavan's Poochatty Alumni Welfare Association, too graced the occasion.


A soulful rendition of the prayer by the school choir marked the start and the School Captain, Ms Devika Kannan welcomed the gathering. Shri KP Radhakrishnan, the Honorary Secretary, in his inaugural address spoke about the inevitable intrusion of social media in our lives, the need for bettering the bond shared with the children and the greater role parents have in it. He stressed on the importance of the Sukalpa Scholarship Exams conducted in school and lauded the efforts taken by the PT.Department in mentoring the children. In her inaugural address, the Guest of Honor, Guru Kalamandalam Kshemavathy spoke about discipline and hardwork being essential to the learning of classical dance forms, while emphasising on the importance of being happy and satisfied in one's life, and realizing of how integral moral values are. The Principal Smt.Chitra.S.Nair presented the Annual Report which showcased the activities and achievements of the students, their parents, the staff and the school at large. The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Thrissur City, Shri Sajeev KK, the recipient of the President's Police Medal for Meritorious Service 2022, was honoured.


The retiring Art teacher, Smt. Lathadevi NB and two non-teaching staff Smt. Ratnakumari and Smt. Shanthakumari, too were honoured on the occasion for their dedicated service. In his 'Reply Speech', the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shri Sajeev KK, spoke about teaching being a very challenging profession today and that education really means bringing out both physically and emotionally strong individuals ready to face the trials and tribulations of life. Smt Lathadevi NB highlighted the fact that there was something special about Bhavan's Poochatty as it draws people to it and her achievements in and out of school have been mainly due to the creative freedom and flexibility allowed here. Next was the Prize distribution. The prizes given away were the Shri C Subramaniam Award for Excellence in Character, the Endowment for the toppers of the SSCE Class 12 - 2022, the Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam "Pratibha Puraskar" sponsored by the Junior Chamber International- JCI Thrissur for meritorious students of Classes 9-12, and the Best Student Award for the year 2022- 23 for Classes 1-8.


Prizes were also given to the participants of the CBSE National Athletic Meet 2022-23, the overall champions of the 38th Dr KM Munshi Memorial Inter-school Athletic Meet 2022, the overall winners of the CBSE Cluster 10 Athletic Meet 2022, the winners of the Sahodaya School Complex, Thrissur- Inter-school Handball Tournament 2022-23 (boys), the first runner-up Thrissur Sahodaya District Indoor Games 2022-23, and the Individual Champions of the School Sports Meet. The much awaited house winners were also declared and the trophies were given. The Felicitations followed. Dr VP Jayanandan, President PTA urged to tap the energy of the students and help to utilise it constructively. Smt Meenakshi Venkataraman, Secretary, Bhavan's Poochatty Alumni Welfare Association, spoke about the presence of a strong network of alumni across the globe and pledged support to the school, the students and their parents. Finally, the School Vice-Captain Master Hiran PS proposed the Vote of Thanks marking the end of the formal function.


The much awaited entertainment programme "Kaliyattam '' started out with an Invocation dance. ‘Kaliyattam’ featured traditional folk dance forms and songs. The main idea was to create an awareness of the rich art forms exclusive to Kerala. The fare was exhaustive: Thira, Thumbi Thullal, Kalari, Theyyam Dance- Poothan, Kanyarkali, Chavitta Nadakam, Kolkali, Oppana, Margamkali, Maramkott, Nadan pattukal, Vattamudi, Mookonchattan, and Theyyam. Everyone was in praise of the way in which the students shed their inhibitions and performed with utmost zeal. The programme ended leaving the audience enthralled and mesmerised. ****


The Bhavan's Thrissur Kendra in its endeavour to turn its schools into Centres of Excellence started out the Awakening Series - Jagaran in 2019. Right from the onset, one of its prime objectives was to conduct an exhibition as a mega event . Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Poochatty, Thrissur, realised that dream on 21st January 2023. The seed sown bore fruit in the form ANAVARAN 2023 - a full-fledged Art and Science Exhibition based on the theme 'Innovations Leading to Sustainable Development.’ The much-awaited one-day exhibition conducted on Saturday, 21st January '23 from 9 am to 3:30 pm was inaugurated by Dr P. Indira Devi, ICAR, Emeritus Professor, KAU. Termed broadly as ‘Temples of Innovation’ , the exhibition consisted of pavilions in which students were divided into groups and were allotted different topics according to their classes. ANAVARAN '23 – An Exploration towards sustainable development


❖ Pavilion 1 called Effervescence was the Physical and Natural Science section. The topics touched upon were Science and Technology, Energy- its renewable and nonrenewable forms, production, and conservation, Water sources - their conservation and preservation, Ecosystem, Food and Nutrition, and Science in Everyday Life. ❖ Pavilion 2 called Mathemagic was the Mathematical Science section where working and still models , charts on the use of Art and Craft in Mathematics, Geometry in real life, forest and weather, Environmental Sustainability and Mathematical Modelling technology were presented by the students. ❖ Pavilion 3, Glowing Legacy connected to Social Science presented projects on various ancient, medieval and modern Indian art and architecture, tribal livelihood and culture, food and festivals of India, glimpses of early civilisation and SDG (Sustainable Development Goal)- models, in an appealing manner.


❖ Pavilion 4 was called Reset- connected to Information Technology. The Computer Science department portrayed the theme of sustainable development and digital STEM. Its three sections - Smart city named AHIVE, Augmented and Virtual reality- Metavista and the Games Corner for and by the kids left all amazed. ❖ Pavilion 5 - Udbhaavana - Art Integrated Learning showcased how a wide range of topics could be integrated with various art forms - Isomerism in Chemistry explained through dance and songs, role-play on gender equality, and poems on the girl child, to name a few. The main attraction was the Juice and Chips Corner where the main ingredients were different types of flowers. ❖ Pavilion 6 - Kaleidoscope- displayed a whole lot of photographs taken by the aspiring photographers of the school - the students themselves. Their theme of nature and the world around made everyone realize how beautiful the world really is and that it is all about one’s perspective - about adjusting the focus.


❖ Pavilion 7 - Petal's Pallette where Art and Craft items beautifully brought out the creativity of children without losing touch of the main theme - sustainable development. The colour and beauty seen here soothed both the eyes and the mind. ❖ Pavilion 8 – Zenith - Linguistics and Performances was an amalgam of all the languages. The highlight was the stage performances of the children, which ranged from dances to songs, skit, chenda melam to mention a few, that left the audience in rupture. A variety of charts, still and working models connected to Language and Literature too caught the interest of the visitors. This variety fare called ANAVARAN, in the words of the Chief Guest Dr Indira Devi was - "a wonderful show of the blend of student talent and careful mentoring by the teachers." She added, "I spent four hours with the young students drawing energy and enthusiasm from them. I congratulate the students, teachers and the efficient leadership of Mrs Chitra S Nair. " *****
