Do not forget when you e-mail or write to confirm the booking
of your visiting speaker you should not only give them your
landline telephone number but also a mobile phone number as
well. This will give the speaker the opportunity of contacting
you or a committee member to inform you if they break down
on the way to your meeting or there is a road hold-up.

This will enable you to explain to your members for the delay,
but also give you the peace of mind the speaker is on the way
and be able to give you an expected time of arrival .

save lives across Yorkshire. In fact, as a Charity
we only receive help through secondment of
paramedics from the NHS, through the Yorkshire
Ambulance Service NHS Trust. To keep both of
Yorkshire’s air ambulances in the air, we need to
raise £12,000 per day, this is the equivalent to £4.4
million per year. As a rapid response air
emergency service the Charity serves a population
of approximately 5 million people across 4 million
acres. Our two air ambulances operate from the
Nostell Priory Estate near Wakefield and RAF
Topcliffe near Thirsk, and together both air
ambulances cover the whole of the region.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR SPEAKERS & SPEAKER FINDERS

Portable Appliance Testing

Recently, I was contacted by a speaker from one of my publications with some
information for the benefit of all speakers and speaker finders. It would seem that many
of the venues we use, particularly local authority and church owned premises are now
asking in greater numbers for all electrical equipment brought onto their premises
to be PAT tested.

Please note that any electrical equipment that does not carry a PAT tested sticker may
not be allowed to be used at some venues and is for health and safety reasons.

This has implications for slide projectors, digital projectors, cables, lights,
extension cables, portable music devices and all similar equipment At the very least
basically it means any electrical appliance where the power to run it has to be plugged
into the power of the premises speakers are booked to speak at.

The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers, employees
and the self-employed persons to comply with the provisions of the regulations. All
reasonable and practicable steps must be taken to ensure that no danger results from
the use of such equipment. This in effect requires the implementation of a systematic
and regular program of maintenance, inspection and testing.

A quick glance in the Yellow Pages or a browse for PAT testing on the internet should
help to locate the name of someone local to you who can perform the necessary tests on
your equipment. Once the test have been carried out, each item tested will have a
sticker fitted showing a date (often annually) when it needs to be re-tested.

Once your equipment has been tested you will be issued with a certificate, whilst
not suggesting you should carry this with you to all your bookings it is worth knowing
that you may be requested to produce it. So, having a copy of the certificate in your
equipment bag may just save the embarrassment of being told you cannot use
your equipment at that particular venue.
A speaker cannot rely on being told about these requirements by the organisation
which has booked them, they may not be aware of them.
