WORDS TO TALk ABOUT LANGUAGE
The following terms will help you understand and discuss
the skills you use in your reading and writing.

English Commenting on Texts

The PEE Principle for Commenting on Texts

PointThis method of organising a paragraph will help you to make your ideas clear.
What's your point?
First make a simple statement about what the writer does:
• The writer suggests that...
• The writer shows this by using ...

Evidence • The writer describes... as...
Give evidence from the text
to support your point.
• For example...
• For instance, in the third paragraph.

Explanation • The writer states:
Explain how the writer's methods affect the reader.
Explain how key words and techniques from the evidence help to
get these effects.

• This makes the reader feel that...
• This suggests that...

Here is an example of a PEE paragraph. It is part of an answer to this question:
"How does the advert use language to encourage people to buy the product?"
The writer suggests that a lot of consumers prefer this product. For example, the advert states: "You
won't be alone! In fact, nine out often people say they can feel the difference just two weeks after
switching brands." The use of this statistic makes the reader feel reassured that the product is
effective. Also, the word "You" aims the text at each individual reader so that they believe it
applies directly to them.

Try using the PEE principle to organise all your writing about texts.
Words to Talk about Texts
These terms will help you understand and discuss the skills you use in your reading and writing.

English Some Spelling Rules &  Strategies

1 ‘i’ before ‘e’

‘i’ before ‘e’ except after ‘c’ if there is a long ‘e’ sound or ‘i’ before ‘e’ if it rhymes with ‘me’.
Alternatively, ‘i’ after ‘e’ if it does not rhyme with ‘me’ and ‘i’ after ‘e’ when after ‘c’.

2 Plurals

If a word is plural, you usually add an ‘s’. If it ends in ‘s’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’ ‘x’ or ‘s’ add an ‘es’. You
should hear an ‘es’ sound in the plural form.
Words ending in ‘ff’ require an ‘s’; words ending in ‘f’ or ‘fe’ sometimes add ‘s’ and
sometimes change the ‘f’ to a ‘v’ and add ‘es’. Some words ending in ‘f’ can be spelled with
an ‘fs’ or a ‘ves’ ending.

3 Words ending in ‘y’

If the word before the ‘y’ is a vowel, you add ‘s’. If it is a consonant, you add ‘ies’.

4 Adding suffixes to words ending in ‘e’

When you add a suffix starting with a consonant, you usually keep the ‘e’. When you add a
suffix beginning with a vowel you usually drop the ‘e’.

5 Suffixes

If you add a suffix that starts with a vowel to a word that ends with a consonant, you usually
double the last letter of the word. This only applies to words of one syllable containing a
short vowel.
If you add a suffix that starts with a vowel to a stem that ends with an ‘l’ then you should
double the ‘l’.
If a word ends in ‘y’ with a vowel in front of it, simply add the suffix but if the ‘y’ is preceded
by a consonant, change the ‘y’ to ‘I’ and then add the suffix.
Remember that there are always exceptions to every rule.

Spelling Strategies

b Highlight where in the word you make a mistake by underlining, shading, colouring, putting a

shape around it or enlarging it to three times the size of the rest of the letters.
c Create a mnemonic or short phrase to help you remember: ‘Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips

Move’, ‘Friday, my friend, is at the end of the week’, ‘There is always gum in the middle of
an argument’ and there is no ‘humour’ in ‘humorous’.
Remember that you ‘cannot not spell’ a word but you can misspell a small part of it.

Mathematics Drawing Graphs

No matter what the subject, you should always follow the rules
below when you are drawing a graph.

1 Title at the top e.g. ‘A graph to show.......’

2 Use a pencil and a ruler to draw the axes.
• x-axis – independent variable
• y-axis – dependent variable

3 Decide what type of graph is to be drawn e.g. Line, bar, scatter...

4 Choose an appropriate scale for each axis.
• The scale must go up in even amounts e.g. 1, 2, 5, 10.
Note that some graphs will require a false origin
• x- Put a small mark on the axis at each new interval
• When plotted the points must cover at least half the page

5 Label the axes. State what the measurement is and do not forget units.
Format should be label/units eg length / m

6 Plot points accurately with a ʘ or an X
(check with individual subject teachers which is preferred)

7 Draw an appropriate line/curve depending on the subject requirements.
Sometimes this will be a line of best fit or a curve or joining the points with
short straight lines. Check which it is with your teacher.
