ATTENDANCE AT SCHOOL

Education is not an option – it is compulsory

Excellent attendance at school is important to allow a child or young person to fulfil
their potential.

Pupil Attendance Target is >95%

St Colm’s is committed to working with parents to encourage regular and punctual
attendance.
Parents have a legal duty to ensure:
Every child of compulsory school age shall receive efficient full time education
suitable to age, ability and aptitude and to any special educational need he may
have, either by regular school attendance or otherwise.
(Education and Libraries (Northern Ireland) Order 1986, Article 45)

Pupils are expected to be in school at 8.50am for registration at 9.00am. It is the re-
sponsibility of parents to ensure that your child is punctual. Latecoming is recorded
and repeated lateness is sanctioned. Only emergency dental and medical appoint-
ments should be made during school hours. Appointment card must be presented to
the Head of Year.

Procedures for parents in case of absence:

It is a parent / guardian’s responsibility to inform the school of the reason for a

pupil’s absence on the first day of absence.

First Day: Parent / guardian to ring the school with reason for absence

before 10.00am.

Return to school: Parent to complete note in planner to be shown to tutor.

If your child appears reluctant to attend school please discuss the matter promptly
with the class teacher or the Principal to ensure that you and your child receive
maximum support.

FAMILY HOLIDAYS DURING TERM TIME:
St Colm’s discourages holidays during term time due to the impact they have on
pupils’ learning. Family holidays taken during term time will be categorised as an
unauthorised absence.

challenging behaviour.

OUR SCHOOL WEBSITE
At St. Colm’s High School, parents/guardians and students are encouraged to visit
the school website on a regular basis.
This school website contains a calendar of events, student work and other important
information. This website is updated on a regular basis during the school year.
The school website address is: www.stcolmshigh.org.uk

Key event reminders will be announced on this site.
The school website also provides a link to ‘My School’: www.c2kschools.net.
‘My School’ provides the following services:
Email (Office 365): e.g. [email protected]
Each student is provided with a school email account – the email address consists of
the student’s username and ends with c2kni.net. Students must check their email on a
regular basis.
My Files:
Each student can access their school documents at home. This method of access is
useful for the completion of projects, homework or in the event of an unscheduled
absence. It is very important after making changes to a downloaded file that it is
uploaded again via ‘My Files’.
Fronter: ‘Fronter’ is our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Fronter allows
students to access courses developed by teaching staff and upload classwork and
homework.
All ICT facilities are secure and are monitored effectively by the school. In the event
of misuse, parents/guardians will be notified and students will be subject to sanctions
under the school’s Acceptable Use Policy.

CYBERBULLYING INFORMATION

Cyberbullying is when one person or a group of people hurt someone's feelings
using technology such as the internet, emails, chatrooms or texting. Threatening,
teasing or embarrassing someone virtually is just as harmful as bullying in the real
world. If you see it happening, report it. Don’t ignore it!! Those who take part in
online bullying often use a group of friends to target their victims. They can ask
others to add a comment to their photo on a social networking site, or forward
something embarrassing onto another group of friends. Sometimes, these people
don't actually realise they are bullying someone.

E-Mail
E-mails can be sent directly to a person or to a group of people to encourage them to
become part of the bullying. These messages or ‘hate mails’ can include examples of
racism, sexism and other types of prejudice. If someone sends you a message and
you forward or laugh at it, you're actually adding to the problem.

Discussion Forums
This is blogging and VLE discussions. You must remember this is a global forum and
anyone can contribute and view your comments. Be polite and courteous at all times.
Good netiquette is essential even in the virtual world.

Social Networking

By sharing photographs, posts and other media, you are communicating with a global
audience. You must understand the impact of this, even if you share media and are
not the original author you are still accountable #thinkbe4youpost. No one wants to
be victimised.

Mobile Devices
Do not send humiliating or abusive text, picture images or video, using a mobile
device. This includes anonymous text messages, photographs or group “WhatsApp”
and sharing videos of physical attacks on individuals.

Interactive Gaming
Games consoles allow players to chat online with anyone they find themselves
matched with in a multi-player game. Sometimes cyber-bullies abuse other players
and use threats. They can also lock victims out of games, spread false rumours about
someone or hack into someone's account.

9

CYBERBULLYING INFORMATION

Many victims of cyber-bullying have complained that they have seen personal
photos, emails or blog postings posted where others could see it without their
permission. Social networking sites make it a lot easier for web users to get hold
of personal information and photos of people. They can also get hold of someone
else's messaging accounts and chat to people pretending to be the victim. People
who bully sometimes send text messages that try to scare, upset or hurt someone
on purpose. Getting a message like this can be frightening, especially if it is from
someone you don't know. You may also be worried about photos or images that
you have sent over your mobile phone. Social networking sites, messaging and
online discussions can all be used to bully and make fun of someone. Even if the
bullying seems to be coming from someone you don't know, that doesn't mean
that you can’t stop it happening. In some cases bullies have set up social networking
“groups” that are dedicated to making fun out of someone. Some of these sites
encourage other people to join in with the bullying, by publishing someone’s
personal details or linking to their social network page.

Remember to read the school AU policy and encourage parents / guardians
to read it with you.

Teacher Relative CEOP

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP), is a UK agency which
is tasked with stopping production, distribution and viewing of child abuse materials
bringing offenders to UK courts.

Policing the internet: The PSNI take seriously cyberbullying very seriously —
Making offensive calls is actually a criminal offence. Anyone who is found guilty
could have to pay a large fine. If you are being bullied over your mobile phone, don't
be afraid to report it to the police. Don’t compromise your future — Universities,
interview panels and potential employers view social networking sites, personal
web pages and blogs. Remember your electronic audience is global!!
