2.0 Parts and Functions of
Brain
2.1 Human brain can be divided into 3 regions
which are :
Hindbrain/ Brain stem :
Has medulla oblongata that controls
autonomic functions (breathing, heart
rate) and the cerebellum which
coordinates sensory input and maintains
muscle movement and balance.
Midbrain :
Connects the brain stem to the thalamus, allowing information to
be relayed from the senses to the brain and back to the muscles.
Also for vision, hearing, temperature control, motor control and
alertness.
Forebrain :
Has the cerebral cortex and surrounds the brain stem and
midbrain. It involves in the process of thinking thoughts and
problem solving. It has two cerebral hemispheres, a folded and
wrinkled surface. The two hemispheres work in co-ordination,
although one side is dominant.
2.2 The cortex of a brain is labelled into 4
major parts which are :
Parietal

and motor position. of tissue called the

(cranium) helps protect
the brain from injury.
The brain contains two hemispheres that each performs a
number of different roles. These two communicate with
one another via corpus collosum.
- No matter how lateralized the brain can get, though, the two sides still work together -
science writer, Carl Zimmer
2.3 LEFT BRAIN
Adapts at tasks that involve logic, language, and analytical
thinking. The left-brain is described as being better at:
Language

songs thinking
Reasoning Mathematics
The right brain of the brain focuses on the visual,
and processes information in an intuitive and
simultaneous way, looking first at the whole picture
then the details.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR BRAIN HEALTHY?
Get physical exercise Research shows that using your
muscles may also help your mind.
Exercise also spurs the development
of new nerve cells and increases the
connections between brain cells
(synapses). Exercise also lowers
blood pressure, improves cholesterol
levels, fights diabetes, and reduces
mental stress
Effects of diet Good nutrition can help your mind as well
as your body
Eat the right foods. That means reducing
your consumption of saturated fat and
cholesterol from animal sources and of
trans-fatty acids from partially
hydrogenated vegetable oils.
Remember your Bs. Three B vitamins, folic
acid, B6, and B12, can help lower your
homocysteine levels, high levels of which
have been linked to an increased risk of
dementia. Fortified cereal, other grains,
and leafy green vegetables are good sources
of B vitamins.
Protect your head
You may be surprised to learn
that moderate to severe head
injuries early in life
increase the risk of cognitive
impairment in old age.
Concussions increase risk by a
factor of 10.
Keep the blood flowing
The brain needs a good blood
flow to deliver vital
nutrients and oxygen and take
away waste products. Smoking,
high blood pressure,
uncontrolled diabetes,
obesity and high cholesterol
all sludge up the arteries
and impede blood flow.
