Dussehra and Diwali Celebration 9th Octobber 2019
Message from Ambassador
Every year, Dussehra, which marks the victory of Lord Rama over the
ten-headed demon king Ravana, is celebrated in India and across the world
with grand festivities and colourful enthusiasm. The day also marks the
conclusion of the season of Durga Puja, when Bengalis enact the legend of
Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura, restoring Dharma in
the world.
This is the time when Indians together rejoice in the ‘Festival of Lights’
- Diwali, which joins Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists in celebration all
over the world. As per ancient Hindu tradition, Diwali commemorates the
return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana to Ayodhya,
ending a fourteen-year long exile. By lighting earthen oil lamps or diyas, we
celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and
good over evil.
I take this opportunity to send a warm message of greetings to the
Hindu Forum of Europe. May this festive season motivate us to offer our
fellow beings the best that we can give; and may we all be inspired to treat
one another with tolerance and goodwill.
May this Dussehra and Diwali bring you and your families peace,
prosperity and happiness. ****

Namaste and Happy Diwali to all of you.
Jai Swaminarayan
This is the 5th year that we are celebrating Diwali in the European Parliament.
The celebration of Diwali in Europe itself is a befitting occasion for all of us, coming from
different parts of Europe, for a get together and celebrations.
Diwali is a festival of brilliance, triumph, keeping to mutual respect, peace and harmony that
is shared by all the Dharmic faiths.
The Diwali festival also coincides with the Hindu New Year for many, which is always a good
moment for fresh starts and positive resolutions for the future.
Palan Foundation is privileged to host this event and we look forward to working with
Hindu Forum of Europe and MEPs to make the Hindu voice- a voice of compassion,
contribution and cooperation, visible and relevant.
Best wishes,

MESSAGE FOR DEEWALI 2019
FROM DADI JANKI
SPIRITUAL HEAD OF THE BRAHMA KUMARIS
Diwali is celebrated not only in India but around the world. It has the deep significance of the
triumph of truth over falsehood, goodness over evil, love over fear, light over darkness.
There is so much suffering in our world today and the world is changing faster than we could have
imagined. To whom can we turn for help?
God is remembered as the Remover of sorrow and the Giver of Happiness. God reminds us that we
are souls and that our original nature is peace. When I the soul, the conscious being, connect to the
Supreme, then I am liberated from suffering and fear. I am filled with strength and courage. I
become an instrument to bring God’s light into the world. This the true Deewali.
During Diwali night, Shri Lakshmi is believed to circle the earth. A symbol of prosperity, Shri Lakshmi
is decorated with garlands and invited into the home. In a world where material wealth is
worshipped, what should we ask Shri Lakshmi for? For the wealth of virtues. When we use virtues
in our lives we become generous hearted. We follow our conscience and it is as if a burden is lifted
from the self. We will always do what is right and true. When virtues circle the earth even physical
wealth will be shared and no child or adult will go hungry or remain without shelter.
Let us celebrate a Happy Diwali that brings health, happiness and prosperity to all.

Dear Friends
It gives me great pleasure and responsibility to send a message on this auspicious occasion
of Diwali and Dushera. Diwali is popularly known as the Festival of Light but many may not
know the significance of lights. The lights were for illuminating across and to welcome Lord
Rama and Sita Devi back home.
In India at the time of Diwali, the businesses start the New Year and the new accounting
books at the same time. As part of the religious ceremonies the accounting books are
blessed. This is also a period of rejoice and Pooja of Lord Ganesh, the god of prosperity. For
us, the Hindus, this is most important festival. It allows us the opportunity to celebrate with
friends, family and business colleagues, the auspicious time and re-engage with people that
we may not have had the opportunity during the year. A truly memorable period to share,
re-engage the lost relationships and more importantly vow to help each other during
coming years.
The celebrations start with Dussehra (also known as Vijayadasami, Dasar or sometimes
Dashain) which this year is on 08th October 2019. It is celebrated on the tenth day of the
month of Ashwin according to the Hindu lunar-solar calendar.
The day of Diwali is celebrated literally with a bang, with lots of fireworks, exchange of
pleasantries and most importantly by sharing and exchanging of gifts and sweets.
With Lord Ganesha’s belssings, the accounting is all interconnected and this time of Diwali, I
wish you prosperity and Happy New.

Message from the President, Spanish Hindu Federation
Tamaso ma jyotirgamaya: lead me from darkness to light.
Namaste,
On behalf of the Federation Hindu of Spain, I wish all my brothers and sisters all over Europe
a very auspicious Diwali.
The Federation Hindu of Spain works in partnership with the Hindu Forum of Europe to help,
preserve and protect our Sanatana Dharma´s values, traditions and religious beliefs..
Spanish ´Government still has not recognised Hinduism as a bonafide religion in spite of
being the oldest living religion of the world and third largest religion in the world. We hope
that soon, we will get the “official recognition” and we would get the same status as other
religions in Spain including recognitions of our religious marriage, Hindu chaplaincy in
hospitals and prisons, receiving funds for construction and maintenance of our temples and
more representation in the Government’s Institutional programs. Currently Hinduism is
ignored at Institutional level in spite of having a population of 50,000 Hindus in Spain.
We hope, this situation will change, and we humbly request the help of Hindu Forum of
Europe and the blessings of all Hindus from all over Europe.
As darkness is dispelled with light, we hope that our government will soon, recognise our
Sanatana Dharma as an integral part of the Spanish society.
Let us make Diwali celebration at the EU Parliament a yearly event and that it grows s bigger
and better.
Once again I wish you all a very joyful and blessed Diwali.
Shubh Diwali, Happy Diwali, Feliz Diwali. Om Shanti

A message from the Spiritual Commissioner
Diwali is about sharing. Since the Vedic times, sharing has been an important part in
all ritual. It is thought that the earliest meaning of the Sanskrit word for temple food
(prasada) is ‘to be shared’. As children we were taught not to be selfish but to share,
as we mature it is less about discipline and more to do with love or bhakti. The
glowing lamp of Diwali is love, a love guided by wisdom and manifested in sharing
and serving others.
For Hindus the world is one family—vasudaiva kutumbakam. As our borders lesson
and our global family come closer together, especially here in Europe, this ancient
message of love and sharing exemplified in Diwali becomes ever more important. We
can never remain wealthy by keeping others in poverty, there is enough for all and we
must share.
Happy Diwali

Sanskrit word Kal which means the time that is why she is seen as eternal. She is a Message from the
President, Hindu Forum Sweden
Historically, Diwali can be traced back to ancient India. Most likely it, began as an important harvest
festival. However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali.
In Bengal, the festival is dedicated to the worship of Mother Kali, the dark goddess of strength.
Goddess Kali’s name is derived from a loving and caring mother who is always there to protect her
children. Goddess Kali fights for integrity and destroys all the devils. She has prevalently called as
Shyama, Kalika, Kaal Nashini, and many more. She is the incarnation of Goddess Durga in vicious
shape that is acknowledged as Woman Power and courage i.e. In Bengali tradition to call her a
goddess representing Nari Shakti.
In each legend, myth and story of Deepawali, lies the significance of the victory of good over evil. It
is with each Deepawali and the lights that illuminate our homes and hearts that this simple truth finds
new reason and hope. From darkness unto light—the light empowers us to commit ourselves to good
deeds and brings us closer to divinity.
Let’s go to celebrate Diwali, Festival of Light, or Nari Shakti , Ma kali puja together this year too!
Wishing all of you a very happy and prosperous Diwali. Let us spread light of Diwali to places where
darkness has fallen. Peace and harmony is the only way forward and humanity is our journey.
Wishing you good health and great success in the coming months and years to come

Madhu Shastri, President, NCHT, UK
(National Council of Hindu Temples, UK)
Dear Lakshmiij and all members of the Hindu Forum of Europe,
I regret that because of prior engagements in India, I am unable to join you as you
celebrate Diwali in the European Parliament.
I recall the excitement in 2006 when the vision of the HFE was born, a vision which
hoped that one day Sanatan Dharma (Hinduism), our most ancient of the world’s
religions, would find respect and recognition throughout Europe. I recall the
enthusiasm with which our then President the late Shri Sudarshan Bhatiaji,
passionately supported the vision, and stepped forward with our NCHT (UK)
becoming one of the founder members.
I am sure that the celebration of light can dispel the darkest of concerns, that it can
ease the troubled mind and that it can dissolve the darkness of prejudice and fear of
differences. It is my wish that this festival expands and grows and that the gifts of
harmony, non-violence, wisdom and exuberant living which epitomise Sanatan
Dharma can light the corridors of the EU Parliament, with peace, harmony and
mutual respects.
Tamaso Maa Jyotir Gamaya!
With blessings for a joyous Diwali
Regards,

Proud to be British Proud to be Hindu
Message from the President of Hindu Forum of Britain
Namaste.
On behalf of the Hindu Forum of Britain, I wish all my brothers and sisters in Europe
‘Happy Diwali and prosperous new year ‘.
The HFB works in partnership with the HFE to peruse a programme to preserve and protect
our culture and help community move forward by participating fully in local regional and
national events, strategic interfaith meetings and Government consultations like Caste Bill,
crematoriums, Religious Education etc. ‘.
This year of 2019 brought in challenges from various avenues apart from usual scourge of
unimaginable terrorism in all its forms, support for raising awareness about Hate Crime
against Hindu and Jewish community, anti Hindu media to name but a few across Europe ,
focusses our minds to our common humanity and the need for the world for Dharmic values
is even greater.
This year also brought freedom for people of the state of Jammunand Kashmir;, minorities ,
women from all faiths can now celebrate first Diwali in Harmoney.
Diwali is the time when the world is reminded that ultimately, only Dharma can survive. The
Hindu dictum ‘Dharmo rakshati rakshitaha’ is even more telling now (Dharma protects those
who protect it).

The light of a single candle can illuminate endless others without
losing its own brightness
Light, colour, sound and, of course, food – all the essential hallmarks of the most important Hindu festival of
the year, Diwali. Diwali, however, is about much more. It is a time for personal reflection; a time to step away
from the ‘beaten track’ of life to reflect upon one’s spiritual journey as an individual and also as a family.
The festival dates back to the homecoming of King Rama of Ayodhya after a 14-year exile in the forest. The
people of Ayodhya (the capital of his kingdom) welcomed Rama by lighting lamps (deepa) in rows (avali), thus
its name, Deepavali, or simply shortened as Diwali.
Because of the lights, fireworks and sweets, Diwali is a great favourite with children, yet its deeper, underlying
messages are relevant for all. The festival is a reaffirmation of hope, a renewed commitment to family,
friendship and goodwill, and a religiously sanctioned celebration of the joys of life.
Customary activities during this time include a thorough spring-cleaning of the home, adorning new clothes
and decorating buildings with lights and authentic Indian artwork. Similar to the traditions of Christmas,
Diwali also involves the exchanging of gifts.
BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in London – the ‘Neasden Temple’ – hosts the largest Diwali festival in
Europe. Worshippers, visitors and members of the British community join together at this iconic community
celebration to joyously celebrate the rich culture and devotional vibrancy of the Hindu faith.
The Mandir is beautifully embellished with decorative lamps and candles as well as traditional Indian artwork.
Special prayers are held for home and business owners to close their existing account books and open new
ones in preparation for the year ahead. In doing so, they reflect upon their spiritual relationship with God.
Outside of the Mandir, thousands gather to enjoy the spectacular annual fireworks display which illuminates
the skies of north west London.
The Hindu New Year follows the day after and begins with prayers for peace and prosperity across the world.
Visitors to the Mandir have an opportunity to observe the Annakut – literally, ‘mountain of food’ – that is
prepared in thanksgiving to God for his providence over the year past and the year to come – an offering of
the first meal of the New Year. More than 1,200 of varieties of pure vegetarian food are artistically arranged to
create a visual wonder.
Opposite the Mandir, the fragrance of traditional Indian street cuisine from the food marquees captivates the
senses. A multitude of sumptuous sweet and savoury snacks are available on both days. The joyous and
uplifting atmosphere – both inside the Mandir as well as outside the complex in the surrounding streets –
attracts tens of thousands each year.
Yet, beyond the festive merriment, the underlying message, as inspired by His Holiness Mahant Swami
Maharaj, is one of unity and togetherness. He preaches the virtues of tolerance, respect, charity and humility
so that families, communities and the world at large can live in harmony and serve one another.
Just like the light of a single candle illuminates endless others without losing its own brightness, Diwali is a
time to burn selflessly like a candle and bring the ‘Festival of Light’ to countless others.

Sustainability of Hinduism - Panel Conversations & Reflections
(views expressed by members present compied by Santanam Swaminathan)
The Annual General Body Meeting of Hindu Forum of Europe was held in London on 22 June 2019.
Over 30 members from different countries attended the AGM. A Panel conversation cum Reflections
was held in the morning, the topic being SUSTAINABILITY OF HINDUISM.
Swami Sri Nirliptanandaji, who presided over the panel discussion, underlined the role of Dharma in
Hinduism. He said that Dharma is the foundation of Hinduism and that is what is protecting the
religion for thousands of years. He quoted the famous saying Dharmo Rakshati Rakshtah (Dharma
protects those who protect/follow Dharma). Swamiji also added Hinduism is the ‘the greatest and
oldest religion, it has its own Unique features, that sustains it.
Following points were presented by the members:
• Hinduism is a way of life; It is based on excellent philosophy;
• It is the only religion which respects other religion. Hindus consider every one, equal and do
not call others with disrespectful words (Kafir, Pagan etc) It gives us a discipline through
which we attain knowledge; It helps us to attain Moksha/liberation. Sacred books of other
religions are much younger to Hindu scriptures. They can be dated.
• Hinduism is Sanata- eternal. Hinduism is the only religion that is environmentally friendly.
Vegetarianism helps environment.
• Yoga leads to healthy life which is accepted throughout the world. Hindus mingle with
nature respecting trees and animals. Hindus consider the whole world as one and the
religion says Vasudaiva Kutumpakam. From the time of Big Bang we have calculations and
we are in the 14th Manvantara (Period of 14th Manu).
A religion can sustain:
Only when it considers everyone equal;
Only when it is environmentally friendly
Only when it doesn’t harm any animal or human being.
Only when it gives respect to all;
Only when it is kind towards nature and animals.
This way Hinduism is sustainable and established, and have been here from the Days of Ramayana
and Gita and Puranas.
To teach the school children we have to speak in simple language:
1.We believe in One God who can be worshipped in various forms;
2.We believe in Karma Theory; Do Good; you will receive good.
3.We believe in Rebirth
These are the three things that differentiate from Semitic religions.
Some interesting facts:
Archaeologically we are the oldest because we see clay tablets in cuneiform writing in Turkey/Syria
giving the names of Vedic Gods who are worshipped even today.
Historically we are the oldest, because even Greek writers wrote in third century BCE that Hindus
have 6000 years history. We have had over 140 generations in our Puranas. So we have to date back
calculation from 3rd century BCE that is 2300 years ago!
Culturally we were far superior when you place us along with Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks and
Mayan. No one can suddenly insert a new custom in marriage or funeral rituals. Those facts show
thousands of years of development.
Members kept on adding valid points. The discussion came to a close with prayers to the Lord.

In times of deep uncertainty, disorientation and fear for the future of the planet and of
humanity, we urgently need a clear and reassuring vision.
We constantly seek new ideas to recover peace and serenity in the world, but we forget that
the solutions, the models, are already available.
Millennia ago God descended as Ramacandra in the role of the perfect government
administrator, organizing a happy society in which everyone loved him and loved each other.
He fought to defeat Ravana, the personification of materialism, who wished to enjoy God’s
opulence separately, without honouring the true proprietor of everything, but at the end the
light of knowledge, of sincerity, of the warmth of spiritual affection prevailed over every
negativity.
The inhabitants of Ayodhya celebrated the return of Ramacandra lighting up the night with
lamps and lanterns; similarly we need to light up our hearts with the glow of hope and love;
their resplendent rays can illuminate the darkness of kali-yuga, our gloomy age.
That the divine light may always guide our steps and illuminate our choices.
Happy Diwali

Yoga and it benefits: Use of props
The eight limbs of yoga are1.Yama(Ethics-Truth, Ahimsa, Asteya (notstealing), 2.
Niyama(Discipline), 3.Asana(Posture),4.Pranayama (Rhythmic Control of Breath), 5.
Pratyahara (Looking Inward), 6.Dharna(Concentration)7. Dhyana (Meditation) 8.Samadhi
(State of super consciousness)
The yogasanas are not created out of the blue. They have come into existence as a
methodical approach to living. The asanas have a great potential to change the behavioural
pattern of the practitioner which in turn the mental stature, enabling the practitioner to
proceed further and remain in a positive path.
Yoga Practice involves asanas - Standing, Sitting, Twisting, Forward, Backward, Bending,
Inverted movements and Contractions.
The main path of Iyengar Yoga is
Precision: If hands have to be straight, it has to be absolute straight. If you have to bend the
knee it has to be at right angles. Metatarsals also need a lot of attention. The precision in the
Asana is not merely meant for the alignment of a particualar part, but for the proper
functioning of the human being. If the body is aligned with precision then the breath is
aligned with that same precision, if the breath is balanced then the mind, emotions and senses
get balanced. We have to study the connections of how these precise adjustments work on the
entire human being.
Timings: Iyengar Yoga practitioners are known for their “ability” to stay for prolonged
duration of time in different Asanas. For a beginner, it does mean developing a will-power
and is essential in early stages of practice. One should stay as long as it becomes meditative.
If uncomfortable come out of the pose.
Sequencing – The sequence in which the asanas are performed is determined by various
factors. These include the purpose of practice, the weather, and time of day, the health status
of the practitioner and the level of practice. With over 220 asanas, there can be any number
of permutations and combinations. However, there are certain thumb rules. For example,
Sarvangasana is never practiced before Sirsasana. Practice generally ends with Savasana or
any other such relaxing asanas.
Props: Have been a fruit of Guruji’s innovative genius. It is because of the prop that people
of all ages and health status can perform asanas with ease and attain benefits of the practice
of yoga. As Guruji explained during his presentation during his 85th birthday celebrations,
one should not be using a prop only as a crutch or support, but learn from the prop.
Heiracrchy in practice : A beginner may do Trikonasa, but a quality of an experienced
practitioner is totally different. For the first it is skeletal plane, for the advanced practitioner
it is meditation.
Breathing: It is normal for beginners, as they evolve with practice it becomes meditative
