Tornado
Tornadoes are known as one of the most damaging disasters. A tornado is a very powerful
column of winds which spirals around a center of low atmospheric pressure. A tornado will
look like a large black funnel which hangs down from a storm cloud.
The name “tornado” derives from the Latin
“tonare”. It means “to thunder”. While the Spanish
develops the word into “tornear” which means “to
turn or twist”. This is why a tornado is sometimes
called as twister or cyclone.
The winds inside a twister can spin around at
speeds up to 500 miles an hour, but it usually
travels at roughly 300 miles an hour. This speed
twisting makes a tornado the most dangerous
storm.
The average tornado has a diameter of about 200 to 300 yards. The smaller tornadoes are
known as satellite tornadoes. These small offspring, about 50 yards across, can be very
fierce and do lots of damage.
The forming of a tornado can be very quick. Sometimes it can form in a minute or less. A
tornado can travel across the ground at high speeds, then it can suddenly vanish. Most
tornadoes last less than twenty minutes and travel less than 15 miles. However, the super
storms sometimes travel over 100 miles before they are exhausted.

The Blue Whales
The blue whale is not only the biggest whale living today; the blue whale is the
biggest creature ever to have lived on Earth. They are mind-bogglingly gigantic; much
larger than any of the dinosaurs. Blue whales and the other ocean giants live their whole
lives in seawater.
Blue whales commonly reach the colossal length of 29m, that’s roughly as long as
three London red double-decker buses parked end to end. Blue whales in the Southern
Hemisphere are generally larger than those in the Northern Hemisphere and female blues
are larger than males.
The longest blue whale on record is a female measured at a South Georgia whaling
station in the South Atlantic (1909); she was 33.58m. The heaviest blue whale was also a
female hunted in the Southern Ocean, Antarctica, on 20 March 1947. She tipped the scales
at 190 tons which is equivalent to about 30 elephants or 2500 people.
Blue whales are now extremely rare due to uncontrolled commercial whaling. Some
populations could be endangered to the point of extinction. (ef.co.id/englishfirst)

MATERIAL CONCEPT
A. ADVERTISEMENT
What is advertisement?
An advertisement (or "ad" for short) is anything that draws good attention towards these
things. It is usually designed by an advertising agency for a sponsor or brand and made
public by various media. Ads appear on television, radio, newspapers, magazines and
billboards in streets and cities.
What is the use?
Advertising has three primary objectives: to inform, to persuade, and to remind.
Informative Advertising creates awareness of brands, products, services, and ideas. It
announces new products and programs and can educate people about the attributes and
benefits of new or established products.
What are the main parts in advertisement?
Regardless of where you place your advertisement, successful ads contain five
major parts.
1. A Catchy Headline. The headline is a major aspect of an advertisement. It often
appears at the top of an advertisement or in the middle so that it immediately attracts
attention from potential customers.
2. An Effective Sub-headline. The text is typically smaller and it gives more insight into
the product you are selling
3. Selling the Benefits. Quite often, people purchase for the benefits a product offers, not
the product itself or its features
4. Images and Packaging. While not all ads contain images, many companies use images
of their products, or people using their products, to grab consumer interest
5. Call-to-action. The call-to-action typically appears at the end of an advertisement and
is used to add a sense of urgency. It should instruct customers what steps they should
take to purchase your item or sign up with a service through your company. They
speak directly to the user. Instead of weaker call to action words like click here, an
effective call to action phrase example will use more specific words that speak directly
to the desired outcome:
• Discover your best life
• Join our community
• Book your next adventure.
Yayasan Tarakanita Bahasa Inggris Kelas IX 102
B. PERSUASIVE LANGUAGE
Persuasive language is used for many reasons, for example, to help to sell products or
services, or to convince people to accept a view or idea. Politicians often use persuasive
techniques to get their audience to agree with their views on a particular topic. Persuasive
language is a very powerful tool for getting what you want.
Here are some types of persuasive techniques and examples of how they can be used:
Technique Examples
Flattery - complimenting your audience. A person of your intelligence deserves much

A. SONG
Song is a short musical composition of words and music.
Songs are used for many purposes: to tell stories, express emotions or feelings, or convey
a moral message or belief.
Song structure refers to how a song is organized, using a combination of different sections.
A typical song structure includes a verse, chorus, and bridge in the following arrangement:
intro, verse — chorus — verse — chorus —bridge — chorus — outro. This is known as an
ABABCB structure, where A is the verse, B is the chorus and C is the bridge.
Hit songs and pop songs tend to follow the standard structure while jam bands and
experimental musicians might diverge from the formula. If a song sounds familiar to us
when we hear it for the first time, it’s because our ears have been trained to recognize the
most commonly used song structures. But that’s not to say there isn’t value in variation as
well.
Here is a lyric of a song Gift of a Friend. Discuss the lyric with your friends.
Questions for discussion:
1. Does the song use the typical structure ABABCB as explained above?
2. What is the theme of the song?
3. Which part of the lyric do you like most?
4. Does the song tell about your life? Please explain.

A tide that is taking me under

My voice drowned out in the thunder
But I won't cry and I won't start to crumble
Whenever they try to shut me or cut me down

When You Believe
(Singers: Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston)
Many nights we prayed
With no proof, anyone could hear
In our hearts a hopeful song
We barely understood
Now, we are not afraid
Although we know there's much to fear
We were moving mountains
Long before we knew we could, whoa, yes
There can be miracles
When you believe
Though hope is frail, it's hard to kill
Who knows what miracles you can achieve?
When you believe, somehow you will
You will when you believe
Oh-oh-oh
Mmm, yeah
In this time of fear
When prayer so often proves in vain
Hope seems like the summer bird
Too swiftly flown away
Yet now I'm standing here
My heart’s so full, I can't explain
Seeking faith and speakin' words
I never thought I'd say
