Chapter One: Building Connection We had to leave early in the morning in extremely chilly circumstances of 5°C, which was challenging for us because we had never encountered such cold before. Whatever it is, it will be an unforgettable moment. Alhamdulilah, finally we made it to Ansan, Seoul to visit the prestigious Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH). We were warmly welcomed by Dr. D.Y. Lee, the head of Research Institute of Convergence Technology. KITECH is a renowned South Korean government research institute, established in 1989 to help develop innovative technologies for the domestic industry, with a special focus on export competitiveness and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). KITECH supports three key R&D area which are Root Industry Technology, Clean Manufacturing System Technology and Industry Convergence Technology. KITECH receives both government and private funding, and distributes most of its research grants to private companies that collaborate with them. We had a brief introduction about the nature and scope of KITECH and followed by a short discussion about possible collaboration opportunities between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and KITECH, which seems very promising. We were truly amazed that such an advanced and well-established institute are managed by only 19 administration staff, 199 researchers and 215 postdoctoral or temporary staff. The facilities and the labs are well maintained and equipped with state-of-the-art machines and technology.

We were informed that KITECH was the largest institute so far, grouped under the Korea Research Council for Industrial Science and Technology. KITECH has another five sub-institutes all over Korea that are currently under the supervision of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy of Korea. KITECH has been expanding their international collaborative partners which included Indonesia, China, Vietnam and USA. We hope that with this visit we may be able to initiate a fruitful joint research collaboration for Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with KITECH in the near future. We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. D.Y Lee, Prof. Ts. Dr. Safian bin Sharif and Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Azlan bin Suhaimi for arranging the visit for us.

Through Dr. Sabrinah binti Adam, the Deputy Director of Centre of Community and Industry Network, we managed to secure a visit to the Malaysia’s Embassy in Seoul. A productive discussion, chaired by Datin Norhadila binti Ab. Halim and assisted by Madam Liyana Jalwati binti Alias, takes us on the journey of exploring opportunities and suggesting collaboration programme between Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and the Embassy. We look into the probability of attachment programme for UTM staff and student likewise, which would be beneficial for both parties. The embassy frequently engaged in various activities ranging from official visit, hosting programme for Malaysian student in Seoul, participating in conference and seminars and many others. Datin Norhadila, who recently joined the Embassy, happily shared her experience of the Korean culture diversity, working environment and not to mention the places we should visit and foods to try. This has left us with excitement and curiosity to go and explore Seoul, playing tourist. We would like to thank Datin for your kind hospitality and generosity!

After the visit to the Embassy, we managed to drop by Itaewon, which is fondly known by the tourists as a place for its large expatriate population and attracts visitors from all over the world. It’s a melting pot of cultures, with diverse restaurants, shops, and entertainment options catering to various tastes and preferences. While Itaewon is primarily known for its lively and vibrant atmosphere, it also boasts some notable and impressive landmarks. These include the Itaewon Antique Furniture Street, where visitors can explore a wide and exquisite selection of vintage furniture shops, and the War Memorial of Korea, a museum commemorating the Korean War located nearby. Itaewon also offers a unique and distinctive blend of culture, which includes the Muslim community there. One of the challenges of going to a foreign country is always finding the Halal foods. But fret not, Itaewon offers various and delicious Halal cuisines. We went to the Eid Restaurant for lunch and Manis Snacks Kitchen to try some famous and mouth-watering Korean snacks like the teokbokki, ramen, fishcakes and dumplings. These eateries are near to Itaewon Central Mosque, one of the main and popular tourist attractions here. Established in 1976, this mosque is open to all visitors who want to learn more about Islam. The first floor of the mosque houses the Korea Muslim Federation office while on the second floor and third floor are the prayer hall. Since the opening of Seoul Central Mosque, seven more mosques have been built throughout Korea. However, Seoul Central Mosque remains the only mosque in the Seoul Capital Area and thus it serves as the functional and central hub of the Islamic cultural community centre in Seoul.

Hanyang University is one of the leading and prestigious private research universities in South Korea, with campuses in Seoul and Ansan. It was founded in 1939 by Dr. L.J Kim as the Dong-A Engineering Institute. Over the years, it has expanded and grown to become a comprehensive and well-rounded university offering a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs in various fields including engineering, business, social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. Like Universiti Teknologi Malaysia being one of the five Research Universities in Malaysia, Hanyang University on the other hand has a strong and solid reputation for research and innovation, with its established and prominent research centers, and it is particularly renowned and acclaimed for its engineering programs as well as focusing on various areas of academic excellence and research contributions. We went for an official and formal visit to Hanyang University, School of Mechanical Engineering on 7th November 2023. Led by Dr. Mohd Faridh bin Ahmad Zaharuddin and Prof. Ts. Dr. Safian bin Sharif. A fruitful and productive engagement with the Dean, along side with a visit to a few of many advanced and cutting-edge labs there are truly eyeopener and inspiring. The systematic and well-organized facilities, as well as conducive and comfortable study environment became an attraction and appeal for international and local students here.”

The day has come for the trip! After months of planning for the trip, we were greeted by the cool air of Seoul upon landed at the Incheon Airport. It was sunny, but it feels different from back home. The first challenge was to pass through the Korean Immigration. We were told so many tales and scary stories where visitors to Korea especially Malaysian did not pass the Immigration security check and were sent back home. A completed file was prepared consisting out K-ETA copy, flight information, accommodation booking, insurance, tentative and even copies of passport and NRIC. Alhamdulillah, all went well and the Immigration ‘Oppa and Unni’ even wished us good luck on our journey. Dr. Azlan dan Prof. Dr. Safian eagerly wait for us outside the arrival hall, as they have arrived few days earlier than us. We had breakfast and set off to our hotel. It was our first experience riding the Subway train from Incheon to Myeongdong, and I kid you not, hauling your big and heavy luggage up and down the many stairs in the subway is sure a memorable experience. We even wished that we do not packed so much for the trip. But hey, travel like local, that’s the one we aimed for.

6 hours of flight and almost one day and half wearing the same clothes, we were whisked right away after dropping off our luggage at the hotel to the Gangnam District to visit the Seoul International Invention Fair 2023 (SIIF 2023) at the Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX). The Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) is an annual event held in Seoul, South Korea, aimed at showcasing innovative inventions from around the world. It serves as a platform for inventors, researchers, and entrepreneurs to present their creations, exchange ideas, and explore potential collaborations. SIIF typically features various categories of inventions, including technology, science, engineering, and design.

The fair provides opportunities for participants to network with industry professionals, investors, and potential partners, facilitating the commercialization and dissemination of innovative technologies. SIIF also includes seminars, workshops, and exhibitions to promote knowledge sharing and technological advancement. Since DVCRI UTM are the main organiser for the first ever research and innovation exhibition UTM Nexus Expo 2023, this visit focused on benchmarking purposes on how to organise exhibition at international level.

Situated outside Convention and Exhibition Center (COEX), are the Gangnam Style Statue which dedicated to the South Korean music hit Gangnam Style by PSY. The song was released in 2012 and remains the most-watched YouTube video ever. The five meter-high and eight meter-wide bronze sculpture is modelled after the iconic horse-riding dance from PSY’s mega-hit song ‘Gangnam Style.’ This sculpture was built to give Seoul a landmark reflecting its culture and history, similar to New York City’s “Bull of Wall Street” or London’s “Piccadilly Circus.” COEX Starfield Library, on the other hand located in the COEX Mall. It’s known for its unique design featuring towering bookshelves filled with over 50,000 books in various languages. The library is open to the public, offering a serene environment for reading and relaxation amidst the bustling atmosphere of the mall. The impressive architecture and extensive collection make Starfield Library a must-visit destination for book lovers and tourists alike in Seoul.

Chapter Three: Hanbok Elegance On our third day in Seoul, we paid a visit to Gyeongbokgung Palace early in the morning. The palace, also known as Gyeongbok Palace, is a grand palace located in northern Seoul, South Korea. It was the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty and one of the Five Grand Palaces built during that period. Gyeongbokgung was originally constructed in 1395 and served as the principal residence of Korean kings until it was burned down during the Japanese invasions of Korea in the late 16th century. The palace was later reconstructed in the late 19th century and has undergone several renovations since then. Today, it stands as one of Seoul’s most iconic landmarks and a symbol of Korea’s rich cultural heritage.

Assisted by our young tourist guide, Mr. Jay Park, we were introduced to the history of the palace as well as explored various historical buildings, including the Geunjeongjeon Hall, the Hall of royal ceremonies and Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, which were built on an artificial lake. This palace also houses the National Palace Museum of Korea, which showcases artifacts and artworks from the Joseon dynasty. We also had an opportunity to see the guard changing ceremony which held twice daily. The guard changing ceremony, known as “Sumunjang” or “Sujeongjeon,” reenacts the changing of the royal guards during the Joseon Dynasty. The guards wear colourful traditional uniforms of the royal guards complete with vibrant costumes and ornate helmets.

Two of us, Aliyah and Ann had the opportunity to try and wear Hanbok during the visit to the Gyeongbokgung Palace. The entrance fee to the palace will be waived for those who dressed up in traditional Hanbok. Hanbok is the traditional Korean clothing characterized by vibrant colors and design. Unlike during the Joseon Dynasty where Hanbok were wore daily, now it often It worn for special occasions such as weddings, holidays, and celebrations.

Hanbok consists of a jeogori (jacket) and baji (pants) or chima (skirt) for women, and a jeogori and baji for men. The design and colors of hanbok vary depending on the wearer’s age, social status, and the occasion. So, wish list checked for both Aliyah and Ann and, our experience in the palace is sure a memorable one.

Chapter Four: Myeongdong Night The Myeongdong Night Market Seoul is one of the most popular destinations for tourists looking to shop in Seoul, thanks to its extensive collection of good stores and boutiques where you can browse a variety of great items and products, making it one of the best night markets in Seoul.

One of the best places to shop in South Korea is Myeongdong Market, which has a wide variety of hip cafes and restaurants in addition to department stores, independent retailers, and shopping centres. Noon Square retail Mall, Lotte Young Plaza, and Lotte Department Store are a few of the well-known retail centres in Myeongdong Market.

Myeongdong Market is more than just a fashion destination; it’s also one of Seoul’s top spots for traditional Korean cuisine. Dozens of street kiosks provide variety of food and beverages. This market is also provided plenty of local and international brands.

In this area of the market, you’ll be able to walk through a collection of shoe stores and select what you like best from an assortment of different options from both local and international brands. That’s not all; there are also several great bag stores that offer a variety of appealing models.

Neon lights pulse like a vibrant heart as you exit the Seoul subway. Myeongdong explodes with sizzling food, excited chatter, and K-Pop blasting from stores. A giant inflatable kimchi beckons you into a world of culinary adventure. Weaving through the crowd, steaming stalls assault your senses. Skewers of glistening meats and mountains of cotton candy compete for your attention. You grab fiery tteokbokki, followed by the outrageous sight (and taste!) of deep-fried Oreos. Wandering further, you discover a treasure trove of souvenirs. Glittery cat ears and a hilarious (though incomprehensible) Korean pun t-shirt join your collection. Laughter erupts from a giant Jenga game, a moment of shared amusement with fellow travelers. As night falls, you savor a warm hotteok and sip refreshing boba tea, oblivious to the passing time. Myeongdong, a whirlwind of sights, smells, and tastes, leaves you with a smile as wide as a kimchi pancake and memories to cherish.

Chapter Five: Nami’s Palette Nami Island, also known as Namiseom, is a picturesque island located in the middle of the Han River, near Chuncheon in South Korea. It gained international fame after being featured in the popular Korean drama, “Winter Sonata.” Visiting Nami Island is like stepping into a fairy tale, with its tree-lined paths, serene landscapes, and a charming atmosphere that captivates visitors from around the world.

The experience on Nami Island began with a scenic ferry ride from the mainland to the island. The clear blue waters of the Han River and the surrounding lush greenery set the stage for an enchanting journey. As the ferry approached the island, we could already see the iconic metasequoia trees lining the pathway.
