Introduction to Non-Conformist and Catholic Records
on Microfilm
What is a non-conformist?
A non-conformist is someone who could not be counted as part of the
Church of England. They are often part of other churches. Examples
include Quaker, Catholic, Methodist or Baptist.
Up to 1644 non-conformists were persecuted and are unlikely to have kept
written records. Even after 1644 they were often obliged to marry in the
Church of England and were often buried in parish churchyard. These
events, however, may remain unregistered.
The Marriage Act of 1753 only recognised as legal those marriages taken
by Anglican clergy (Quakers and Jews were exempt). Despite these
tendencies many non-conformist churches did keep their own registers,
often in the possession of individual ministers.
There is no requirement to deposit such records with local record offices so
coverage can be patchy. Many records are held at The National Archive.
What do the records contain?
Like Church of England Parish Records non-conformist records contain
baptisms, marriages and burials. Sometimes births and deaths are
mentioned. Catholic records sometimes provide registers of confirmations
and first communicants. Meetings of Society of Friends (Quakers) are
sometimes included.
Using this Handlist
Part one provides a list of non-conformist records held by place, with a
key to abbreviations.
Part two provides a list of records by denomination, giving the name
and place of the church, chapel or meeting house, the record type,
covering dates and corresponding film number. Any associated notes
are also included.
Part three provides an index to the Wesleyan Methodist Historic Roll,
which names people who contributed to the Million Guinea Appeal of
1898.
These records are on microfiche. They are arranged in the handlist by
place, with fiche number and page numbers listed alongside.

Notes
1. The Congregational Chapel in Chapel Lane was built on the site of the old
meeting house in 1833. It was formerly known as Upper Meeting House.
2. Pershore Broad Street Chapel was founded in 1658.
3. The mission hall was not affiliated to any non-conformist church, but was run
on a non-denominational basis.

Wesleyan Methodist Historic Roll
The Wesleyan Methodist Historic Roll comprises 50 volumes, organised into areas,
in which the names of some 1,025,000 contributors to the Million Guinea Appeal of
1898 are recorded. The Appeal raised £1,073,682 before it was closed in 1908 and
was used to purchase the site of the Royal Aquarium opposite Westminster Abbey,
build Westminster Central Hall and expand the missionary work of the Wesleyan
Methodist Church both at home and abroad.
The microfiche at Worcestershire Library and History Centre comprise fiche 1-19
from volume 22. These contain the Worcestershire Circuits which were part of the
Birmingham & Shrewsbury District in 1898-1908.
