B wls Malaysia AIM FOR THE SKY MALAYSIA has successfully developed into a formidable force on the World stage in lawn bowls. Written a colourful history - with winners at World Championships, Commonwealth Games, Asian Championships and SEA Games. In 2008, Safuan Said took the world by storm when he was crowned World No.1 in the men’s singles. Nor Iryani Azmi, Mohd Hizlee Abd Rais, Siti Zalina Ahmad and Emma Firyana Saroji did the nation proud winning World titles, too. Last December, Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple missed the World title by a whisker losing to England’s Sam Tolchard (3-12, 6-4, 2-3) at the World Singles Champion of Champions in New Zealand. Malaysia hope to continue the legacy and reach the pinnacle. They are not far off superpowers - Australia, England and New Zealand. PRESIDENT’S LANE WHAT an exciting way to kick-start 2023 ! Last December, Izzat Shameer Dzukeple made heads turn in World Bowls - winning a silver in the Singles Champion of Champions in New Zealand. We made waves at the World Bowls again last month. Nurul Alyani Jamil took the podium - a bronze - at the World Bowls Indoor Championships in Australia. We retained our stronghold in Asia, too, for a record 12th-time early this year (4- gold, 2-silver and 2-bronze). The future augurs well, too. We emerged overall champions of the Asian Under-25 tournament - making a clean sweep (3-gold). We are stepping up efforts to consolidate our position on the World stage. Programmes and competitions are lined-up for corporate sectors, national age-groups and in schools. In June, we will kick-off the inaugural ‘National League’ in our bid to unearth and tap a bigger pool of talents for the national team. Our immediate goal is to make waves in Gold Coast for the 2023 World Bowls Championships in August. We are bent on taking lawn bowls to the next level ! POWERHOUSE OF ASIA 12-TIME winners - Malaysia the undisputed champions of Asia. The Malaysia Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF) took great pains to work their way up with an effective sports development system in place - for their success. At the 14th Asian Lawn Bowls championships - the national team emerged overall champions with 4-gold, 2-silver and 2-bronze medals while Philippines came second (3-0-2) followed by India (1-3-1) in third place. Nurul Alyani Jamil starred for Malaysia with 2 golds in the women’s singles and triples events while Izzat Shameer Dzulkeple, a silver medalist at the 2022 World champion of champions in Auckland, snatched the men’s singles title. WORLD BOWLS 2023 World Bowls Championships, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia - Aug 29-Sept 10 BATTLE ROYALE COME August all eyes will be on Gold Coast for the World Bowls Championships. A record number of 47 nations - the biggest field in the events history - will descend on Queensland, Australia. A world class showdown is on the cards with heavyweights from Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Wales, England and many more vying for honours. Asian giants - Malaysia, India and the Philippines - will also be out to strut their stuff. At the 2016 Championships, the New Zealand’s men team finished top with 2 golds and 2 bronzes. A NEW BEGINNING JACK KE SEKOLAH A NATIONAL League for Lawn Bowls. The 1st ‘Reneuco Bowls League’ will kick-off June this year. The Malaysia Lawn Bowls Federation (MLBF) has high aspirations. It’s the beginning of many good things. There will be top level action in five zones played over six months. The objective is to unearth and expose a bigger pool of talents for the national team. The ideal platform, too, for the aspiring players to build their careers. The competition is for singles, pairs, triples and fours events - both men and women. 1st Edition June 2023 PARENTS, enrol your children for Lawn Bowl classes. It is easy to learn and everyone can play the game. Its about concentration, co-ordination and precision. The “Jack Ke Sekolah” programme is designed for kids to get an early taste of the game. About 1,000 kids from 100 schools nationwide will benefit from this programme introduced last year. Besides introduction to the game, there will also be competitions for the Under-15 kids. The idea is to give them an early start to develop their skills. National players and coaches will also conduct introductory courses for school teachers. The equipment needed to play lawn bowls - a bowl, a jack and a mat. The jack is the target ball. The game is to accurately roll the bowl close to the jack. She bowed out to eventual winner Julie Forrest (6-3, 5-3). The Scottish veteran is no stranger in World Bowls claiming her 12th world title. For Nurul the experience will do a world of good ahead of her ambitious career. Izzat Shameer Dzulkepli’s campaign in the men’s section ended in the quarter-finals to New Zealand’s Andrew Kelly (9- 3, 3-8, 1-0).
