Our School

Elderbank Primary School is situated in the east of
Irvine and serves the communities of Broomlands and
Bourtreehill. In addition to the mainstream primary
and early years Elderbank provides specialist support
for pupils placed in the Enhanced Deaf Provision and
Supported Learning Provision. Pupils come from
across Ayrshire to access these resources.

We encourage positive relationships with pupils staff,
parents, carers, partners and the wider community.
Our aim is to equip all of our learners to be successful
in an ever changing world.

This leaflet has been prepared to reflect on our
success and achievements in the session 2021-2022
and to share our priorities for 2022—2023.

Looking Back
2021-2022
Last session was a challenging one as we returned to the first year
with no formal lockdowns. However, the cancellation of Christmas
events and large gatherings in December 2021 meant school life
continued to operate differently as we aimed to keep everyone safe.
Our main priorities were:
 To improve writing across the school
 To develop Outdoor Learning
 To refine interventions and approaches to meet learners’

needs
 To enhance and develop positive relationships
Across the school and early Years there was a focus on writing
skills and the successful introduction of PM writing with a significant
investment from our Pupil Equity Fund on resources. There has
been a general trend of greater interest from learners towards writ-
ing. Staff feel empowered and are supportive and enthusiastic of
the developments.
Outdoor learning was a very successful improvement priority and
we worked across the school and early years to increase and im-
prove the quality of learner experiences and linked with the Family
Learning Team. The new Polytunnel was an excellent purchase
providing valuable real life learning opportunities for all. Outdoor
Learning framework was highly praised by the North Ayrshire
Council S.T.E.M team.
Our targeted intervention support for learners was adapted to meet
the needs of all and the decisions made were underpinned from our
assessment data and trends in attainment.
There continued to be a strong focus on building positive
relationships. This included Playground Champions, a focus on
House Competition and the opportunity for our Primary 7 pupils to
participate in team building and outdoor pursuits in the absence of
a residential experience.

Attainment
Throughout the year we gather lots of information on how our
children are progressing in their learning. To monitor their progress
we watch children working through tasks, listen to what they say,
ask important questions, set challenges and use some
standardised assessments. We get together and look carefully at
the Curriculum for Excellence experiences and outcomes to ensure
children are making progress.
North Ayrshire Council also ask us to summarise our children’s
progress in reading, writing, listening and talking as well as
numeracy and maths. They ask us to look particularly at children
who have reached the end of the Early, First and Second Levels:
P.1, P.4 and P.7. We are proud of how well our children are
progressing, but we are clear about our next steps.
In the session 2021-2022, there was an increase in attainment in
reading writing and numeracy at P1 and P7. The trend for the
Primary 4 cohort, was a slight decline in attainment across all
areas, in comparison to the previous cohort. There is a marginal
decline in talking and listening across P1, P4 and P7 and therefore,
this is a priority for session 2022-2023.

Elderbank achieved their Rights Respecting
Schools Gold Award following an
accreditation visit.

Investment in Literacy Resources which
supports learning and teaching

We worked with parents and carers to try and engage more
parents to form a Parent Council. We were successful in
getting some to volunteer with the aim of raising valuable
funds for the end of term fun day. This involved discos, prize
draws, and doughnut sales. We hope to establish the Parent
Council this session. We have lots of information ready for
the Parent’s Night

Our School Improvement Plan

2022—2023

Although the year was challenging, there were many
highlights and this can be seen by accessing the documents which
were emailed out last session or by clicking this link and the
second link for terms 3 and 4.

As part of the evaluation we require to evaluate the work of the
school and grade this appropriately using the How Good is Our
School Framework.

1:3 Leadership of Change Very Good
2:3 Learning Teaching and Assessment Good
3:1 Ensuring Wellbeing, Quality and Inclusion Very Good
3:2 Raising Attainment and Achievement Good

Our Improvement Priorities for the school , Supported
Learning and Enhanced Deaf Provision are:

Setting a framework to reduce the cost of the school day

To review the curriculum rationale to make sure what we are
offering meets the needs of all learners and includes the
introduction of play based learning in Primary 1

To focus on the Oracy intervention to improve talking and listening
skills.

To continue to develop positive relationships and promote health
and wellbeing for all learners.

We will also continue with the Outdoor Learning Opportunities and
development.

We look forward to working with you, your child and our school
community this session. If you wish to discuss any aspect of the
work of the school and Early Years, please do not hesitate to
contact the Leadership Team via the School Office on
01294-218632.
