ANECVDOTES
Ms Aditi Misra
Director Principal, Delhi Public School, Gurgaon
I have always believed in kitchen remedies or Granny’s
cures to treat minor health issues.
My favourite kitchen remedy is turmeric in hot milk. It sorts
out infections (specially a sore throat) and strengthens the
immune system.
I tried it on my daughtervin law who’s not familiar with
Indian herbal remedies. I had to warn her that it’s going to
taste terrible!
She had the concoction reluctantly but was delighted that
she had a peaceful night without coughing!
So now, we have turmeric in her kitchen too which she uses
liberally when needed!

Instant Relief from Bee Sting
An encounter with bees in my childhood in our backyard
orchard left me with an unforgettable experience with
nature cure. My siblings and I were stung, and we were in
terrible pain. Hearing our cries, our maid quickly rubbed a

swollen area and lo! the pain
vanished magically. The wonder of home-remedy settled
home since then. I still believe in looking for such measures
before calling a doctor, like ginger-basil for cough, turmeric-
milk for pain relief, carom and nigella sniffing for common
cold.

Our country has abundant supply of herbs and spices. Since ages,
Indians believed and practiced naturopathy. Father of the nation
Mahatma Gandhi said, 'India does not need to import drugs from
outside when she has an inexhaustible stock of a variety of drugs
grown in the villages themselves'. Some of the most valuable items
found in normal Indian households are remedy for most of the
common diseases we suffer. Current study explores the role of spices
in kitchen as well as within medical fraternity as it acts as anti
proliferative, anti-hyper hcuhmoalenstvheeroallethm. iaS,picaensti-adlsiaobheetilcp having anti-
inflammatory effects on to cure many
diseases like cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, cancer and AIDS.
Majority of the Indian women suffer from anemia. Daily consumption
of raw-banana-skin's boiled water invariably increases the hemoglobin
in blood. I remember consuming raw turmeric with jaggery every
morning as I had weak liver since childhood. I remembered my father
taking homemade dried neem leaves powder with water every
morning to control his diabetes. Twenty years back Turmeric &
calcium (Chuna) was the most common healing ingredients to apply
on routine sprains on hands & legs. In our childhood we used to
inhale fresh black cumin to control running nose. And who can forget
Indian Kadha in different forms mostly with ginger, basil, black pepper
and honey to recover from common cold, cough & sore throat? I
appreciate the initiative of RWYC group to introduce Indian kitchen
and explain its utility to the budding youngsters. I look forward to
get associated with RWYC's innovative and effective projects in
future too.

“Nature holds the key to our aesthetic, intellectual, cognitive
and even spiritual satisfaction.”.
Nature’s cure is a constructive method of treatment which
aims at removing the basic cause of disease through the
rational use of the elements freely available in nature. I
have only spoken about this to close friends, but hopefully
by sharing my story others vcan relate. I was lucky enough
to not get ACNE in my teens but it started appearing at the
age of 25. I tried everything but all in vain. Finally, I came
across this easy home remedy which gave me respite and
my acne started healing. My message for those going
through some rough acne flares is this, ‘’You will get through
it. Do not let acne hold you or yourself’’.
Nature Care- Acne
A teaspoonful of coriander juice, mixed with a pinch of
turmeric powder, is an effective home remedy for acne and
blackheads. The mixture should be applied to the face after
thoroughly washing it, every night before retiring. The juice
of raw potatoes has also proved very valuable in clearing
skin blemishes.

There was a time when cures came only from Nature. Over
time, man created new situations and new materials, which
in turn created new diseases, and then started needing
man-made solutions.
My husband suffered from IBS and Amebiasis in the 1980's
and no amount of Digene & Gelusil would help. He was
offered maixmedixitnurteheofraItsioabogvfo2l, :1T:1.ripAhsaplaooannfudl Lavan Bhaskar
churan to be taken at
bedtime. He continued having this mixture for over two
years. It has now been over 30 years and he has never
had any need for man-made medicines for this problem.

Granny's Home Remedies was indeed a wonderful idea to
delve into our kitchens and connect with our elders at the
same time. The students who took part excitedly shared
how much fun it was to 'prescribe' a remedy and get to
play 'Doctor'. Lata Bhandari told me about the remedy for
cracked heels. And how her granny lovingly used to
massage ahetrryh. eIelshawveithunitu. vsBueailnlyg the winter season, I too
gave it dry skin and the remedy
seemed doable. I applied it twice a week and I could see
visible improvement in my feet.
