Lesson Title: Making a 3D Model
Subject: 3D Modeling
Level: 7th Grade
Prerequisite skills or knowledge (connect to prior lesson):
Prerequisite skill: orthogonal spatial geometry basic notions
Time Requirements for First Exposure & Incentive: 20 minutes
Time Requirement for In-Class Activity: 25 minutes
Time Requirement for Post-Class Activity: 15 minutes
Worksheet for preparing what students will do before, during, and after the lesson
Before class sheet and tools
In class sheet
Shared activities Homework sheet
Step 1: Define Content Scope, Learning Objectives, & Instructional Strategies
Students will learn how to manipulate a 3D object with the basic manipulation operations:
move through an axis direction, flip by an angle, duplicate, trim and group.
By using an online application they will model a heart form piece, prepared for 3D printing.
With this activity they will be able to create 3D objects in computer ready to be exported and
printed in a 3D printer.
Goal 1:
Content Type Learning Objective Task, Question, or Activity
- Usage a 3D app
- How to use a 3D - Individually
app to manipulate registering and
an object? creating an example
of an artifact in 3D
- 3D commands for - Manipulating and - In pairs, project an
manipulating an export a 3D model object to be printed
artifact to be printed in a 3D out
printer
The direct instruction and project-based learning are the best approach to this learning activity.
First of all students will learning with step by step instructions. Then, in pairs, they will prepare
a new related situation to became their own project and will develop all steps to achieve their
final product and present to others.
Step 2: Student’s gain familiarity with new material before class
At home, they will watch a video, made by the teacher, explaining the steps of the process to
register in the 3D app Tinkercad.com using the email school account.
Then, by themselves, they have to repeat the steps and do it by they own using their own
device.
Step 3: Activities that motivate students to prepare before class
A simple 4 steps tutorial about how to 3D modeling, will bring some early motivation to the
usage of this app. For this, teacher will ask students to watch about the basics at
https://www.tinkercad.com/learn
Step 4: In-class activities that provide students opportunities to deepen understanding
In order to apply the tasks that they did before class, they will model a heart object.
Teacher may use the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28JyBgUJBKc or make a new
one with his/her own voice so students can repeat the procedure with more engagement to the
activity.
Engagement time: 5 minutes
Teacher will show them how to work during the lesson and will make a small check in before
starting it.
The students will work in pairs.
Explanation: 10 minutes
Teacher will ask students to prepare and access the app, according to the task they did before
class.
Teacher will present the worksheet that will guide the process of the object modeling.
Student’s working group: 20 minutes
During pair’s work, students will work freely on their own way, guided by teacher that should
tutor them lightly. The teacher will assume only a help resource in certain difficulties that can
appear in the process.
Work Presentation: 10 minutes
The final presentation of the work to the class it’s an learning activity also, because groups can
help each other in order to minimize learning gap between students.
Teacher only orient the process of presentation and students will assume the command of the
work presentation.
Class conclusion: 5 minutes
Teacher will give a new assignment (a new project) to be done at home, individually.
Step 5: Post-class activities that extend student learning
The best project done by students at home, presented in class, and choose by the students,
will be printed in the 3D printer.
Step 6: Ongoing Evaluation and Assessment
A checklist to assess the work done before class can be used by the teacher in the explanation
activity.
A rubric sheet to assess the workgroup by students and teachers
A rubric sheet to classify the project made by students at the class
The usage of rubrics will help students and teacher to understand the students achievements
and performance in the process of modeling. It can be used to reorient and help to overcome
difficulties.
