Fundraising for Shenyce – Head Shaving
and Hair Raising
Earlier this term we had a few very brave students who took part in
a student led fundraiser to support our school community member
Shenyce Marsden-Roberts who is currently baƩling cancer.
Organised by Olivea Brown and strongly supported by her dad Ben
Brown, a head shaving, hair raising event took place. This combined
with a cake aucƟon at Ben’s work place had raised a total of $2100 to
be donated to Shenyce’s ‘GivealiƩle’ page.
Special thanks to Olivea Brown, Ben Brown, Gabrielle Evans, Safari
Henderson and Cailah Marshall for their bravery. Also thanks to
Rebecca Wichmann and Delwyn Koce for assisƟng with the shaving.

OPEN NIGHT FOR YEAR 6 STUDENTS
Wednesday 31 August is our Open Night for Year 6 students for next year.
Please help us to spread the word to your friends and family. Our contribuƟng schools have all been given
a personal invitaƟon to aƩend but students in other schools will rely on the adverƟsement in the paper and
word of mouth.
Your child may be asked to help out on the night and will bring home a permission slip for this if they are.
The Open Night starts at 6pm and will conclude at approximately 8pm.

PAID UNION MEETINGS – Wednesday 14 SEPTEMBER
This week all schools have been advised of an upcoming paid union meeƟng for all union members in schools
– both Primary and Secondary.
The meeƟng is for all BOP NZEI and PPTA members is on Wednesday 14 September at 9am.
Here is the message from the unions to parents:
“The Government has announced a proposal to dramaƟcally change the way schools are funded. Principals
and Boards of Trustees would have to make trade-offs between teaching staff and other costs schools face.
Teachers are very worried that the global budget would lead to:
• fewer teachers and larger class sizes
• less job security for teachers
• lower quality teaching
• fewer hours for teacher aides and support staff
• more complex financial work for Boards of Trustees
The Government’s current funding review is a once-in-a-generaƟon opportunity to beƩer fund educaƟon.
NZEI Te Riu Roa and PPTA are the unions that represent more than 60,000 teachers and support staff from
birth to year 13. They have asked all members at our school to aƩend meeƟngs in September to hear more
about the proposal and help determine the educaƟon sector’s response.
It is important for union members in your school to aƩend these meeƟngs to have a say about how we get
beƩer funding, not bulk funding.”
Many schools around the country are closing for the day to allow staff to aƩend and then having a teacher
only day.
Te Puke schools do not wish to close for instrucƟon for the day.
We have arranged for the buses and taxis to bring our children to school later and go home as usual on this
day.
All schools will start for instrucƟon at 11am. Buses and taxis will complete their usual run to allow children to
be here for an 11am start Ɵme. Students who walk or bike will also need to be here for an 11am start.
School will then finish at 3pm as usual with buses and taxi’s running normally.
Students who aƩend from 11am – 3pm will count as full aƩendance on this day.
We apologise for this inconvenience. It is highly unusual for the unions to call a meeƟng during the school day
and this is an indicaƟon of how seriously they view this maƩer.

the Disabled.
150 Gingerbread horses were baked, iced and decorated then sold at school and downtown to the Te Puke

YEAR 7 NETBALL TEAM INTERMEDIATE CHAMPS!
The BOP/Poverty Bay Inter-Intermediate Winter
Tournament Day is a toughie.
Netball, Soccer, Hockey and Rugby played out amongst
all 12 Intermediates across the BOP and Poverty Bay.
CompeƟƟon is tough and games are fought hard for.
All our codes did really well but in parƟcular our Rugby
team who were very unlucky not to make the Semis.
However, Netball was the stand out performers with
the Year 8A team coming second place to Tauranga in
their final and the Year 7A team the 2016 champions.
CongratulaƟons to everyone but especially the netball
girls.

AIMS GAMES 2016
The Games are HUGE this year! We thought they were big last year but they have grown massively.
We are on countdown with our preparaƟon to compete at the Games. TPI goes hard to compete at
the highest level – we are not there just to make up the numbers. If we have entered a code it is with
the belief that our compeƟtors have a chance of winning a medal. Coaches are compleƟng training
schedules with teams and individuals in preparaƟon and soon we will be calling a parents meeƟng of
all compeƟtor’s parents to prepare fully for the Games. Parents will be required to parƟcipate in this
meeƟng to learn about the Games, team protocols, expectaƟons on the players and supporters for the
week. A separate noƟce will come home regarding this.
Our thanks in advance to all those parents and whanau who are coaching, managing, umpiring,
refereeing, supporƟng and transporƟng our children to events.
It’s going to be GREAT if we all have the same goal in mind – our student’s success and enjoyment of
the Games.
Check out the AIMS Games website for details of what is on – it will blow your mind.
10,000 athletes coming plus coaches, managers, umpires, parents, grandparents, media, etc etc. The
Bay knows how to put on a great event. See you there!
TECT SUPPORT
We have been very fortunate to receive a donaƟon of $13000.00 from the
TECT Charitable Trust. This money together with the sum raised from the
Kia Kaha fun run will be used to purchase a radio staƟon and
filming equipment. It also helped us purchase eight new computers for
our Library. We are very grateful for the support from TECT – thank you!
