WRAY MEMORIAL METHODIST ENGLISH CHURCH

The Rev. Fred Crowell Wray was an ordained minister of the
United Methodist Church, a member of the Virginia Annual
Conference, and missionary of the General Board of Global
Ministries of the United Methodist Church. He served the Lord
for 40 years in India, teaching ‘The Work of the Pastor’ at
Leonard Theological College in Jabalpur, Central India.
At various times he served congregations in Calcutta, Luck-
now, Jabalpur, Pune and Bombay. He established the Ar-
chives of the Methodist Church in India. He had published
several books of the history of various Indian Methodist
churches and institutions.
In the later years of his life in Bombay, he took a group of
homeless street boys under his loving care.
A good proportion of the present day leadership of both Protestant and Orthodox
churches in India credit Rev. Wray for their pastoral education. He came as a short-term
missionary Pastor to India and arrived in Jabalpur, where he met Naomi Ruth who was
also a missionary to India where they were engaged after two years. When they re-
turned to the U.S. they were married in Detroit.
Fred Wray went to Boston University to finish a Master’s in Theology, and Naomi fin-
ished her Master’s in Art History and Christian Art by Indian artists. They were then sent
to Jabalpur, to teach at Leonard Theological College. Together they have 3 children who
were all born in India. All of them are involved in educational work: a son, Gregory Allan
Wray and two daughters, Cynthia Marian Wray Wannamaker and Jennifer Susan Wray
Olson.
Mrs. Naomi Ruth Wray became a deaconess in the Indian Methodist Church, was active
in WSCS and the deaconess organization. From being hostess at the Methodist Center
in Bombay and consultant to Christian artists in India to her service as chairperson of
the Archives and History Committee, Naomi Wray puts her background as an art histori-
an into multiple effort.
They were married for 43 years till Rev. Fred Wray passed away at the age of 70 on
February 10,1999 at Schuyler at his home. In the last 10 years of his life, he had lived in
his home-town of Schuyler where he helped establish the Community Library and the
Walton’s Mountain Museum. He had been active in the work of the Thomas Jefferson
Area Food Bank in Charlottesville and involved in the ministry of the New Faith United
Methodist Church in Schuyler.
We are honoured to be named after this great man of God who dedicated his life to our

country and city. We are honoured to be called WRAY MEMORIAL METHODIST ENG-
LISH CHURCH !!!
