The “Poem Corner”
Here are reflections on some of my favourite poems..
Happy Reading…
“The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost
About the poet: Robert Lee frost was an American poet, born in
San Francisco. His work was initially published in the United
States. The Road Not Taken is one of his famous poems. He has
also won some awards as well such as the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.
In the poem the speaker is walking through a forest whose leaves have
turned yellow so that tells us that it's autumn season. The speaker
while walking on the road regrets that he or she is not able to travel
both the roads that are before him/her.
The road in the poem the Road not taken symbolises our life. The poet
says that the path that we don't choose in life is the road not taken.
He describes his feelings about that choice that we left in the past.
The path which we have chosen decides our future and our destination.
People usually choose the path that is most travelled and experienced,
only a few people choose a different path and tend to learn alot from
life when they travel the road that is travelled less.
The main theme of the “Road Not Taken” is that we must believe that
our choices are unique and each one of us is different and possess
different qualities. Being brave and choosing the road that is travelled
less is gaining actual experience in life.
The poet also speaks about the concept of seizing the day and living it
to the fullest. The regret or doubt seen throughout the poem is that
he took the road that was less grassy and travelled less, he felt
travelling the road that was travelled by most people would have made
his life different.
The Road Not Taken has a rhyme scheme of ABAAB. The poem consists
of four stanzas of 5 lines each.
Some of the literary devices used in the poem are Metaphor, Simile,
Symbolism, Imagery.
“Night of the scorpion” by Nissim Ezekiel
I remember the night my mother
was stung by a scorpion. Ten hours
of steady rain had driven him
to crawl beneath a sack of rice.
Parting with his poison - flash
of diabolic tail in the dark room -
he risked the rain again.
The peasants came like swarms of flies
and buzzed the name of God a hundred times
to paralyse the Evil One.
With candles and with lanterns
throwing giant scorpion shadows
on the mud-baked walls
they searched for him: he was not found.
They clicked their tongues.
With every movement that the scorpion made his poison moved in Mother's
blood, they said.
May he sit still, they said
May the sins of your previous birth
be burned away tonight, they said.
May your suffering decrease
the misfortunes of your next birth, they said.
May the sum of all evil
balanced in this unreal world
against the sum of good
become diminished by your pain.
May the poison purify your flesh
of desire, and your spirit of ambition,
they said, and they sat around
on the floor with my mother in the centre,
the peace of understanding on each face.
More candles, more lanterns, more neighbours,
more insects, and the endless rain.
My mother twisted through and through,
groaning on a mat.
My father, sceptic, rationalist,
trying every curse and blessing,
powder, mixture, herb and hybrid.
He even poured a little paraffin
upon the bitten toe and put a match to it.
I watched the flame feeding on my mother.
I watched the holy man perform his rites to tame the poison with an
incantation.
After twenty hours
it lost its sting.
My mother only said
Thank God the scorpion picked on me
And spared my children.
About the poet: Nissim Ezekiel was an Indian Jewish poet, actor,
playwright and editor. He was born in Mumbai. The Night of the
scorpion is one of his famous works. He has been awarded the
Padma Shri.
The poem “Night of the scorpion” is written by the famous poem
Nissim Ezekiel. The poet shows the love of a mother is countless and
unconditional no matter what happens. A mother never thinks twice if
she faces any situation and always cares for her children. This poem
shows the value of love in the world.
The theme of this poem comes from a religious background and the
poet wrote the poem to give an impression of anger, but also an
underlying message of motherly love along with a hint of culture and
superstition.
Towards the end of the poem we see the irony, that is, the poet's
mother expresses her gratitude to God for saving her children. It is a
universal truth that a mother cannot tolerate the suffering of her
children.
The poem does not have a specific rhyme scheme and is written in free
verse. The scorpion in the poem is seen as an evil force, bringer of pain
and anguish. The poem also highlights the superstitious side of India
and how villagers believe in them.
“No Men are Foreign” by James Kirkup
Remember, no men are strange, no countries foreign
Beneath all uniforms, a single body breathes
Like ours: the land our brothers walk upon
Is earth like this, in which we all shall lie.
They, too, aware of sun and air and water,
Are fed by peaceful harvests, by war’s long winter starv’d.
Their hands are ours, and in their lines we read
A labour not different from our own.
Remember they have eyes like ours that wake
Or sleep, and strength that can be won
By love. In every land is common life
That all can recognise and understand.
Let us remember, whenever we are told
To hate our brothers, it is ourselves
That we shall dispossess, betray, condemn.
Remember, we who take arms against each other
It is the human earth that we defile.
Our hells of fire and dust outrage the innocence
Of air that is everywhere our own,
Remember, no men are foreign, and no countries strange.
About the poet: James Kirkup was an English poet, translator and
travel writer. He wrote about 45 books that included
autobiographies, novels and plays. No Men are foreign is a very
nice poem where he speaks about how there is discrimination
amongst people in the society , when the reality is that we all are
the same and we all exhibit similar qualities. There is also a
famous saying “ Man is comes from dust and returns back to dust”
so what is the point of discrimiation.
“No men are foreign is a beautiful poem , it tells us all about the
divisions based on caste, colour, gender and religion are baseless since
we are all similar in our basic need of common resources in life. We all
have a common source of origin and we all are dependent on the same
resources for our survival.
The poet addresses the readers and reminds them that no men are
strangers and no country is foreign. He says no one is different from
the other. He wishes to remove the borders of the countries so that
everyone will be free to move around. Under the uniform, we all have
the same body, which breathes in the same way. The land on which the
men of other countries walk is similar to us. The earth is one, and we all
will be buried after death on the same earth.
In the second stanza, the poet says that people of other countries also
have the same sun, air and water. It means that God does not
differentiate between people and treats everyone equally. At the time
of peace, everyone eats food and enjoys their life. But they also suffer
during the war and long winters. So, the poet means that everyone has
seen good and bad days in their life. All of us have the same hands, and
we all work hard to earn our livelihood.
Here, the poet says that the people of other countries have eyes
similar to us that wake and sleep. They also have the strength that can
be won by love. Everywhere on the land, life is universally the same. It
means that we have similarity in our body parts and it functions in a
similar way. If we can recognise it, then we will understand that all
human beings share equal traits.
In the fourth stanza, the poet says that whenever we are told to hate
a person of another country and think of him as our enemy, then we are
depriving, cheating and condemning ourselves. He further says that we
should not pick up weapons to fight against each other. We should not
fight amongst us and should live in harmony.
In the last stanza, the poet laments that human beings are spoiling the
earth by their hate. They are destroying their innocence by the fire of
war. The smoke which comes out through the weapons fills the air with
dust. He further adds that the air which is present everywhere is ours.
We should not make it dirty by our feelings of hatred. We should
remember that no men are foreign, and no countries are strangers. We
all are equal and the same.
This poem does not have a rhyme scheme and is written in free verse.
Some of the literary devices used in this poem are Metaphor and also
repetition has been used.
