Welcome...

TO THE DEVIZES OUTDOOR CELEBRATORY
ARTS FESTIVAL FORTNIGHT 2016

Once again, DOCA is proud to bring you a spectacular two weeks of
free festival fun - showcasing some of the very best outdoor arts from
the South West, UK, Europe and beyond - Devizes’ famous Confetti
Battle, fabulous Festival Fringe events and remarkable Carnival.
This year we welcome back festival favourite, Ramshacklicious, with a brand
new street theatre show – Mr & Mr Burn - co-commissioned by DOCA and
Glastonbury Festival. You can expect a stunning array of contemporary
street theatre, fire, music and explosions throughout the fortnight of course,
with highlights such as the spectacular international circus collective,
Le Cirque Du Platzac, and the epic manipulation skills of Pangottic and
Circus Geeks who take juggling into a different dimension. Literally!
We welcome carnival artist Iola Weir to Devizes this year. She will be
working with local people in older age to make an entry together for the
Carnival. And is this the year that you wow the Carnival crowds with your
entry? You can download entry forms now from the DOCA website.
We couldn’t do it all without our incredible, dedicated team
of volunteer Festival Makers who are busy confetti stuffing, brochure selling,
flyer distributing, warm welcoming and carnival marshalling (among many
other things). If you’d like to join this merry band just get in touch!
Warm festival wishes from The DOCA Team

MEET THE ARTISTS & PERFORMER

15feet6 – Dynamite & Poetry
“When the fuse gets shorter and there are no more friends, get
ready for the boom for all that begins shall end”
In ‘Dynamite & Poetry’ four acrobats deliver an explosive
performance, literally making you jump out of your seat. They
blow up the stage with a spectacle of Russian bar, teeterboard
and Chinese pole. Risk is a necessity but all is complemented with
a keen blend of humour and poetry.

Circus Fergus
This highly interactive show is packed with family friendly gags
that will keep everyone laughing. You can expect incredible
juggling – from juggling up to 5 torches to juggling with his feet –
and an unmissable Grand Finale on top of a giant unicycle.

Cirque Bijou – Circus Cafe
Prompted by a comedy duo of ‘French’ waiters, members of the
audience can select a dish from the a la carte menu and will receive
their very own surprise circus performance. Whether it’s in the
form of juggling, hula hoop, acrobatics, comedy or just something
down right bizarre they are guaranteed to enjoy their grub!

Dizzy O’Dare – The Giant Balloon Show
Take everything you know about balloons, and twist that into a
highly entertaining 45minutes that will have the whole family in
stitches and awe. Expect feverous balloon sculptures, high energy
comic performance and the all important giant balloon! This is a
small-scale show, which plays big.
“A master class in entertainment!”

Entlechy Arts – Bed
Bed is a touring live art /street theatre performance event
co-designed by a group of emerging older artists (in their 70s
and 80s) from south east London. Members of the company
co-created the work because they needed to make a creative
response to the feelings of invisibility that they experience on a
day to day basis.

RS... @DOCA_info

Devizes Carnival & Devizes
International Street Festival

Francesca Mari – “CIRCO A PUA”

An eccentric, elegant, vivacious maid with a sarcastic sense of
humour finds herself in the middle of a group of people. A suitcase
becomes a table, a stage, a container. Expect juggling, balloons, a
2.5m high giraffe and an inevitable fiery ending of course...

Frolicked – Arthur

Arthur is an efficient and service driven hygiene inspector with
high expectations. He has incredibly high standards and expects
his surroundings to be immaculate, including (and especially)
any nearby people! He’ll clean anything... and anyone... with
meticulous attention to detail. Arthur may be a stickler for
hygiene, but he’s got a kind and incredibly sweet side too. Be
warned – you may already think you’re clean, but Arthur will make
sure that you’re spotless!

Frolicked – The Boggarts

Boggarts are little leaf goblins that firmly believe everyone else is in
their territory, and their territory happens to be wherever they decide
to roam. These legless wonders are totally obsessed with human
being legs (particularly shoes). But be careful not to antagonise
these little creatures – they may be small but they’re chock full of
mischief... and their bark may be accompanied by a toothless bite!

Fullstop Acrobatic Theatre

Every day we are bombarded by strong images of masculinity and
femininity. The roles that men and women play in biological, social
and cultural contexts are an inexhaustible point of discussion.
Inspired by this theme, Fullstop Acrobatic Theatre has combined
circus, theatre and dance to create this surprising show.

GlassHouse – You, Me and Everybody Else 27

Norfolk based company GlassHouse Dance has created an exciting 27
dance-theatre performance for the street. Set in various locations,
three duets unfold to tell the story of a relationship seen at different
points in time. The audience is taken on a journey that reflects
the couples own, at points comic and laugh-out-loud at others
poignant and touching. Beginning with them falling in love for the
first time, the question is where will you and they end up next?

Cirque Du Platzac – Kermiz

A temperamental aerialist, a Spanish toreador, a trumpeter on a
slack rope and a German acrobat with a fascination for staplers –
just some of the eccentric characters from Le Cirque du Platzak.

Kermiz is a circus adventure in a childish dream: not a sweet
story, more like the dark side of a Grimm fairy tale. Kermiz mixes
the atmosphere of the old circus with nouveau cirque, peppered
with rousing folk music.

Pangottic – Project_Vee

Project_Vee Roulette wheel meets juggling: danger, skill and
unpredictable moments. Project_Vee is a nod to a Soviet era
circus act, remixed for the 21st century. Steel, concrete and
motors meet in an unlikely way; Project_Vee takes juggling in a
different dimension. Literally.

Plunge Boom – Smoke

A man moves amongst members of the public. Gradually smoke
begins to creep from out of his trouser leg. He gives his leg a
shake and the smoke stops. Next, it arises from his collar, then his
sleeves. What starts as a tiny wisp, ends up as an all-consuming
plume. Can you help him out before he disappears completely?

Mr & Mr Burn

Meet Mr & Mr Burn, an explosive, chaotic, offbeat double act with
a touch of disaster about them. One part strange function room
musician, the other part, the not so tuneful crooner.

Listen as they fill the air with some sweet swinging, brass
heavy music, performed from their small but decadent mobile
bandstand. But will they get through their concert without
setting their whole world on fire?

Co-commissioned by DOCA and Glastonbury Festival.

Hold on – Stefano Di Renzo

Welcome to the world of Hold on where gravity, counterweight
and centrifugal force are tested to new limits. Witness a wordless
performance of delightful virtuosity where buckets whirl around,
cups and balls fly through the air and planks become catapults.
All culminating with the charming character holding himself afloat
in the air just by the strength of his grip whilst he is precariously
balancing on top of the rope he is holding on to. He holds himself
up, if he lets go he will fall…

28

Stopgap – Bill & Bobby

After a night on the town two revellers awake to find
themselves in a bath...

Convinced that the party is not over, the two friends play a tipsy
tribute to the dancing partnerships of the silver screen.

Bill & Bobby celebrates a golden time of good old - fashioned
entertainment, when dancing together and ‘happily ever after’
went hand in hand.

Strong Lady Productions – LEAP

LEAP into the unexpected with this surprising acrobatic show as
two performers revel in the joy of performing the biggest tricks
they can with astounding strength and grace. Reuben leaps
high into into the air and only Charmaine can stop him hitting
the ground! In a final test of trust he climbs up and around a 5m
pole held of the ground in her hands, to balance on top with a
backdrop of only sky, before a final LEAP of faith…

With tenderness and delight these friends explore the limits of
what is possible when you ask the question “If I Leap, Will You
Catch Me?

The Raree Man’s Peepshow

The peepshow was one of the most popular forms of street
entertainment in the 18th and 19th centuries - not only depicting
scenes for amusement, but often as a way to educate, showcase
exotic scenarios and present moral tales. Join The Raree Man to
view animated scenes through the peepholes, just as they did in
centuries gone by.

Wet Picnic: The Lift

The Lift is a roving theatrical experience that envelops its
audience, welcoming them into a world of captured moments,
giving them a surreal experience that they won’t forget.

An elegant elevator (on wheels) arrives accompanied by three
bellhops. The audience are invited to step inside and choose a
moment by selecting one of ten different ‘floor’ buttons. Each
button triggers a particular scene or event which is performed
for both the audience member in The Lift and those on the
outside looking in.

ON THE MUSIC STAGES...

The Kevin Brown Trio SUNDAY 28TH
Hailed by Mark Knopfler, Kevin Brown is a living legend and quite simply one of the
UK’s finest acoustic blues guitarists on the Circuit today. From the main stage at
Glastonbury to the beer joints of Texas, and with 11 albums to his credit, Kevin has a
growing number of loyal fans who not only love his touch and tone but have grown
to admire his heartfelt songs, often delivered with a great sense of humour and dry
northern wit. Music for the heart and feet- perfect!

Afro Cluster SUNDAY 28TH
Recently returned from the BBC Introducing stage at Glastonbury, Afro Cluster,
together with front man MC Skunkadelic, meld authentic sounds and rhythms of
afro-funk and hip-hop with impassioned, politically conscious lyrics atop bold
melodies, afro-beat aural acrobatics, rich harmonies and complex rhythms.

Gugge 2000 MONDAY 29TH
This massive exuberant band from Bournemouth is the first Guggenmusik ensemble
to be formed in the UK. More commonly seen and heard in Switzerland and Austria,
this lively big, big band sound will have you tapping your feet and smiling. They are
as good to watch as they are to listen to.

Hot Seats MONDAY 29TH
Ben, Graham, Jake, Josh, and Ed like to play stringband music. They call it that
because it’s just too tedious to try and get into whether it’s old time, bluegrass,
ragtime, country, or general freakout music. Mainly based in Richmond, VA, the
band have been playing together since 2002.

30

Hackney Colliery Band MONDAY 29TH

Formed in 2008 out of a desire to play music that appealed to the feet as
much as to the ears, the Hackney Colliery Band is east London’s unique take
on the brass band. Featuring trumpets, trombones, saxes, sousaphone and
marching percussion, the band are totally acoustic and yet able to blow the roof
off any room. Hackney Colliery Band’s members have hugely diverse musical
backgrounds, ranging from work with cutting edge jazz groups to the Royal Opera
House, and from Jarvis Cocker to major international orchestras.

Gee Baby I Love You MONDAY 29TH

Genuine soul, raw funk and blues with professional, exhilarating showmanship
that lifts you higher and higher. Exciting to watch and bound to get everyone
dancing. Fronting the band is the wildly charismatic J.O. whose distinctive
guitar playing and powerful vocals are complimented by the wonderful vocals of
Cherie, who also takes the spotlight on a number of tunes.

Driving the band is Joe 90 on drums and Rick on bass. Many years together, have
made them one of the tightest rhythm sections around. The melodies are provided by
Tom on keyboards. The infamous GeeBaby Brass Section are almost a show in their
own right. Featuring Martyn “Hot Lips” Harries on trumpet, Savio on trombone and
“Nick” on alto sax.

DOCA PRESENTS

KERMIZ

BY

Cirque Du Platzac

SUNDAY 28TH AUGUST
7.30PM

The Green
A guy excited by lawnmowers and heads of lettuce, a temperamental Italian
aerialist fighting with a Spanish toreador, a trumpeter on a slack rope, and
a German acrobat with a fascination for staplers. These are just some of the
eccentric characters from the twelve-man collective Le Cirque du Platzak.
Kermiz mixes the atmosphere of the old circus with nouveau cirque, peppered
with rousing folk music. Expect an never-to-be-forgotten evening from this
troupe of extraordinary circus performers and musicians.
