How to add literature to
Mendeley

Although Mendeley is a great application that has a
lot of literature (literature search), it is limited, and
you might not be able to discover what you're
looking for.

If that's the case, don't worry; Mendeley can
accommodate the situation in two ways, and you can
choose whichever method is most suitable for you to
cite the literature article you want:

• Drag and drop

• Web importer

Drag n Drop

1. Let us assume that this document isn’t found on Mendeley’s
‘Literature search’

2. Download the article on your device (if you can't access the pdf
version, don't worry; sci-hub can help)

3. Drag the downloaded document into the Mendeley folder that you
want the literature item to be part of, as shown below

Web Importer

An application that can be seen on the toolbar of your
browser. It allows users to instantly import documents and
literature pieces from a search engine into the Mendeley

application reference library.

1. Click on ‘tools' at the top of the page and select “Install web
importer” to instal the web-importer.

2. A webpage opens up. Select which browser you would like to add
the web importer extention to and complete the process of
downloading.

3. You can import any documents directly from the webpage to any folder in
your account once you've registered in with the same email you used to
sign up for the desktop Mendeley application. If the PDF is available for
free on the webpage, you also have the option of downloading it. You can
find it in the desktop application's library once you've saved it.

4. All documents that are saved on your library on the Mendeley Desktop

application can also be accessed on the Mendeley webpage if you sign into
your account and click on ‘library’.

How to cite / reference

1. Clicks on ‘tools’ on the top left-hand corner of the application and
select the option ‘install WS word Plugin’.(please note that I have
installed)

2. Open your Word document. I'll use a blank page as an example:
choose ‘reference' from the toolbar, then ‘insert citation' just under it.

3. When you want to cite, select ‘insert citation’ and a pop up will
appear. Click on ‘Go to Mendeley’.

4. This will open your ‘library’ of saved references on your Mendeley
application. Click on the relevant document and select ‘Cite’ –this will

transfer the citation directly onto your word document.

5. After you have completed you work on the document, simply click
‘insert bibliography’ under ‘reference’ on the toolbar to add a

bibliography.

6. This will automatically insert a list of all the references you
referenced while authoring the document.

Changing the referencing style

1. You may be needed to cite using a specific referencing style at
times. You can change the referencing by clicking on ‘styles’ under
‘referencing’ and choose ‘more styles...’
