4 Sejahtera Centre for Sustainability and Humanity International Islamic University Malaysia IIUM Sejahtera Centre for Sustainability and Humanity (SC4SH) was established to champion the university’s Whole Institution Transformation (WIT) with the strategic mission of “Humanising Education Through Sustainable Development Goals and Maqasid Shariah” (Basic Human Needs of Existence) since 2018, endorsed as a Centre of Studies by the Board of Governance in their Meeting No 61 effective 1st September 2021. The centre’s scopes of Sejahtera, Sustainability, and Humanity are translated operationally into five main functions: Education for Sustainable Development, Sejahtera Neighbourhood (RCE Greater Gombak), Sustainable Campus, the UNESCO Chair in Futures Studies (Anticipation for Sustainability and Wellbeing), and Community Engagement.
5 SEJAHTERA by Chong Hui Shien Everything begins within the heart, which serves as the foundation for society, the world, and the entire universe. In the midst of rapid globalisation, we have collectively embraced a Western approach that prioritises the mind over the heart. In order to foster worldwide well-being, a rather multilayered concept that conveys a deeper meaning than any single word can convey, it is essential that we introspect and nourish our hearts in order to achieve the true form of wellbeing. The glowing three-dimensional heart installed in the middle of the artwork symbolises the unifying SEJAHTERA force that brings everyone together. There is a diverse array of individuals, including children, men, women, and older adults, each with their own personal stages of heart and brain development. These variations are visually depicted through the intricate embroidery. Red threads interconnect the individuals, symbolising the bonds between them and fostering a sense of sustainable community.
6 Sejahtera: Sustainability in Action the Malaysian Way Sejahtera is the local concept of sustainable development addressing the macro aspects of living, which consist of economy, society, culture and ecology. This macro level has to be well balanced with the micro aspects, which consist of cognitive, intellectual and physical …complimented with the inner dimensions of human being such as spiritual, ethical and emotional elements. Sustainable growth shares this holistic view, seeking to balance economic development with social equity and environmental health. To achieve the ultimate sustainable growth, two things are needed which are pure heart and positive mindset as depicted. While SEJAHTERA is a Malaysian way of putting sustainable development into way of living, other ASEAN countries have their own distinctive ways in showcasing all these concepts and understanding into action.
