Life is Why

Life is Why LIFE IS WHY

Your suppor t of the 2016 “Hear ts in Havana” Houston Hear t Ball is an honored commitment
to a bold legacy of heart health brought forth by a handful of pioneering physicians and
social workers who founded the American Heart Association in 1924. These forward-thinkers
believed those suffering from heart diseases need not be confined to complete bed rest –
or worse.

As we celebrate our 91st Anniversary, the American Heart Association celebrates all the
moments in life that keep each of us striving for a healthier life. We teach the importance
of healthy lifestyle choices, and provide science-based treatment guidelines to healthcare
professionals to ensure the best treatment for every patient, every time. We educate
lawmakers, policymakers and the public. We have funded more than $3.7 billion in research
since 1949, more than any organization outside the federal government, resulting in 13 Nobel
Prize winners and lifesaving advances such as the first artificial heart valve, cholesterol-
inhibiting drugs, heart transplant capabilities, and CPR techniques and guidelines.

OUR CHILDREN ARE WHY

Through the American Heart Association’s effort in public policy and advocacy, more than 16
million students are impacted across the country — roughly one third of all schools. Because
of our work with the USDA to update school nutrition standards, 30 million kids are eating
healthier school meals today. Thanks to legislation we supported that requires CPR education
in school, nearly 1.4 million students in 24 states are now trained lifesavers.

We’re proud of our accomplishments, but our work is far from done. Over the past 40 years,
rates of obesity have risen dramatically among childern of all ages, more than quadrupling
among those ages 6 to 11. In fact, childhood obesity is now the No. 1 health concern among
parents in the United States. topping drug abuse and smoking.

THE FUTURE IS WHY

We are working toward improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent,
and reducing deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent, all by the year
2020. We spend nearly 80 cents of every dollar on research, education and community
outreach. We want families to live healthier, longer lives so they can experience more of life’s
precious moments. Our work is key to shaping the future for the next generation.
