I know some of you well and have been honored to work with you through our student groups, research, and thesis
projects. I know all of you a bit – through our class together. I'm sad our in-person time together was shortened – but even
with less time together – I know you are a wonderful group of smart and kind therapists.

I hope you remember that you know so much, and that there is always more to learn. I hope you remember to take a
breath – and why taking a breath works and helps. I hope you each have wonderful careers as thoughtful, kind, intelligent
people who each chose to become an occupational therapist. Congrats to each of you individually, and to all of you as a

May 15. 2020. CSU OT and ORS Class of 2020:
The world needs some very scrappy, big-hearted, grit-filled graduates to
help pull its people back into the lives they have so hopefully planned to
lead. It just so happens we have some very scrappy, big-hearted, grit-filled
graduates heading their way. Plus, these grads know some stuff. So, world,
stand back. Here comes the best we've got to help the many, many who
need nothing less than the best. Make a difference! Make us all proud!

Dear class of 2020 –

There will never be a graduating class like yours again!! In these last few months of your final spring semester, so much
has been thrown at you: Everything online since spring break - online lectures, online labs, online group work, even Zoom
and MS Teams thesis defenses!!! Now you’ll complete your academic degree and move on to fieldwork, all during this
pandemic isolation. Never have we longed for personal contact, touch, those congratulatory hugs so well deserved like now.

These past months you’ve had your share of disappointments - great disappointment at a time we should be so excited.
And yet you’ve persevered. Never has a class had to muster the courage, stamina, optimism, and hope through such
prolonged unknowing as this. And yet you’re doing it! You’re finishing against all odds. And while there’s no celebration to
recognize, you ARE recognized, appreciated, CELEBRATED and admired by your teachers, advisors, classmates, families, and
friends.

We all feel the terrible disappointment of not having graduation. But think about this: While graduation ceremonies
lead to good memories, there are so many, many more memories and friends from your 2-years-and-a-summer’s worth of
academic work at CSU-OT. Nothing can happen to take these memories away. Keep them close and near at hand. As for me
and my memories, I’ll always remember you to be a bright, interested, interesting and, most important, a kindhearted class.
You certainly were a wonderful group to share my last semester of teaching – and I’m thankful. And at times like these, I find
being thankful helps me push fear away. And being hopeful helps me realize whether 1 month or 6, things will be better.
Before we know it, we’ll be looking back, remembering the spring of 2020.

And how did you get through it? It’s simple: You’re AMAZING!!
