51 News from the Parish Council of TIMBERLAND AND THORPE TILNEY Timberland Parish Council held their Annual General Meeting on 15th May 2023. Over the course of the past 12 months the members of the parish council have worked hard for the benefit of parishioners. During the past twelve months the Parish Council lost a friend and colleague, John Sharman. The PC paid suitable tribute to John shortly after his passing. In addition, was the departure of Cheryl Burbidge as parish clerk and the Chair expressed thanks for her support and dedication to the role. Kay Harvey was appointed as the new clerk and joined in January 2023. The Parish Council welcomes her to this role. Timberland Green continues to remain the focal point for leisure activities in the village. The green is maintained to a very high standard and is open for use yearround. Perhaps of most concern to many parishioners is the state of the roads in the parish. Many of the roads are subject to large numbers of potholes, crumbling verges and subsidence. There has also been concern raised about the excessive speed that some drivers use when travelling around the parish. The PC takes these issues very seriously and continues to report concerns to the district council for resolution. County Councillor Rob Kendrick remains a good friend to the parish and provides full support in trying to get improvements to local highways, but funding remains scare and as a result improvements are slow. Towards the end of the year two significant commercial planning applications were raised. The first is the Bio digestion Plant targeted for Metheringham aerodrome. The second is the Solar Farm planned for Blankney Estates. The PC determined that we would act to ensure that parishioners are kept fully informed on the progress of these proposals and PC members have attended meetings on both these plans. This will continue as the year progresses. From a financial perspective the PC is in a sound position. In summary, 2022/2023 was a year filled with challenges and the new year promises to be the same. Going forward the PC would welcome more parishioner attendance at PC meetings to hear concerns, suggestions, and feedback on any subject which affects the parish. If you cannot make the meetings in person, you can contact the PC via the clerk by email [email protected] or by telephone 07968 943825. We welcome your support. 55 Longstanding Timberland resident Mr Frank Massingham passed away just a few days before his 102nd birthday. These photos were taken by Nicky Wilkes from MATES on his 100th birthday, which took place during the pandemic. People gathered outside his house to sing Happy Birthday and celebrate with him in a sociallydistanced way. Postman Tom delivered the card from the Queen. The Parish Council wishes to express its deepest sympathy at the recent passing of former councillor Chris Neale. Those of us who knew Chris and had the pleasure of working alongside him as parish councillors will remember him as a good friend and respected colleague who made an outstanding contribution to the life of the parish. Chris moved to Timberland in 1992 and lived here for the remainder of his life, passing away at the good age of 77. He rapidly put down roots and became a popular figure. He could often be seen strolling around the village with his dog Sapper and was always happy to stop for a natter when the opportunity arose. His approachability and friendly demeanour ensured he was a very popular gentleman, and he rapidly made many friends who will greatly mourn his passing. As parish councillor, Chris’s achievements are impressive. It is largely down to his efforts that the parish has the popular village green for recreational purposes. Around 2012, together with the chair, Chris engaged with Lincolnshire County Council to negotiate the lease of the village green, following which he worked hard to ensure that fencing and hedges were laid to make it the recreation area we now enjoy. Using his links to Sleaford Town football club he acquired a set of goal posts which he and Terry erected for use by the parish’s budding footballers. Chris also ensured that the pitch was fit for play by acquiring the first village mower following the sad demise of Martin Cricket Club. But it was not only his diplomatic skills that were put to good use; his practical skills were also exploited. For more than 20 years Chris maintained the Church grounds, cutting the grass and the hedges and generally ensuring that things were kept in good order before handing over the reins to his son-in-law. As a skilled welder, he constructed the first village beacon in honour of the late Queen’s Golden Jubilee. Sadly, Chris had to build another after the incumbent chair accidentally sold the first for scrap! Practice, as they say, makes perfect!! The beacon was used just last year to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Chris worked hard for the benefit of Timberland and the wider parish. His impact on village life was significant and he leaves a legacy of which his family can be proud. FAREWELL TO FRANK MASSINGHAM This dedication to former councillor Chris Neale, who died on 18 January 2023, was read at the meeting of Timberland Parish Council on 23 January 2023. 57 Great Coronation celebrations It was good to see so many events take place across the district. As I was helping with events in Metheringham I wasn’t able to visit celebrations in other villages but hear they went well. Thanks must go to all the organisers and volunteers who worked so hard to make it a memorable time. Martin Village Hall gets a facelift Volunteers from our Highways contractors periodically spend a day or so on community projects. This time Martin Village Hall was selected for the project. I know the Hall management are delighted with the finished paint job in the entrance lobby area. Do you know someone who could volunteer? Volunteers are needed to work with Children and Young People in Positive Futures and Youth and Community Development. Community Panel Members are also needed to work with children and young people who have been sentenced by a youth court. If someone you know is thinking about a career in this field, this is a great chance to gain valuable hands-on experience as well as basic qualifications such as safeguarding and health and safety. Find out more by visiting www.lincolnshire. gov.uk and select Apply to become a volunteer – Community panel members. Major road improvements This year will see a major scheme costing £2.8 million pounds to improve the B 1191 between Martin and Woodhall Spa. Highways officers have been working on the project for some time with engineers from our roads laboratory conducting investigations into the road structure. Nearer the time there will be publicity about the project and diversions signed.
