Welcome

“An Inside Job”

by Pastor Jason Duley
I’ve always been fascinated by the pyramids of Egypt. It amazes me that ancient people
found ways to design and build these exceptional monu-
ments. There’s nothing like them in the world, in terms of
scale and intricacy. Our journey with Moses in the Bible
takes us right to these engineering marvels.
Much has been written of their design and purpose. Some
researchers have devised a “pyramid code,” which hypoth-
esizes that the pyramids were built according to astronomical
standards in order to predict world or cosmological events.
Every thousand years, the code says, a Pole Star will per-
fectly align with an important interior corridor called the
Descending Passage. What happens deep within the pyramid is what is important.
Imagine building your house so that on a special day—maybe your birthday—the stars
align perfectly outside your window. You’d have to have a pretty high opinion of yourself
to go through all that trouble, wouldn’t you? And remember that the pyramids aren’t
houses. These weren’t the places where ancient kings lived. These are just memorials.
Tombstones, really. Wow, you’ve got to be wealthy, powerful, and enormously arrogant
to enlist thousands of people to build a grave marker that’s 400 feet tall. That’s putting a
lot of stock in your death.
I was talking with one of our church members who visited the pyramids and even went
inside one. Describing the inside of this massive structure he said, “It’s empty.” Of course,
when I hear a description of an empty tomb, I think of Easter.
Like many peoples, modern and ancient, the Egyptians hoped for an afterlife. They
desired to give their pharaohs the best experience in the next world by building grand
tombs and filling them with relics, gold, and treasure. Replicating the splendor that only
their kings knew on Earth, they looked to build an eternal kingdom. But in the end, they
created an empty memorial.
Our faith—with Moses as its great forerunner, Christ as its fruition—claims a very different
outcome.
The good life in heaven, which many people still seek to build by earthly design, wealth,
accomplishments, and orienting their lives to some special star, is in reality found in
humble relationship. We participate in this life when we love God and others. What is
inside the human heart is more important than what’s inside the mighty pyramid.

Sundays: Friends in Faith

10:15am · Adult Flex
Led by Bill Johnson

With the coming of the new year the Friends in Faith class began
a study of the Gospel according to Luke, from the perspective of
looking “from the outside in.” Unlike the other Gospels, Luke
has also contributed another most important book to the New
Testament, the Acts of the Apostles, without which we would be
missing the background of the early church. The class will
emphasize a close reading of the biblical text and the associated explanatory
commentary, a brief video presentation by Dr. Don Carson and time for class discussion.

This exciting series brings readers face-to-face with the truth of
God’s precepts, promises, and purposes--in just minutes a day. With

known as Loudoun Hunger Relief (LHR), it seeks an increased focus on fresh,
nutritious foods. Out of the 1.2 million pounds of food provided last year, just
6% was fresh food. If LHR can increase its percentage of fresh food, it will
increase the health and wellness of our community.
Please bring in all donations of fresh food on the LAST Sunday of each month.

Meet the Pastors

REV. JASON DULEY - SENIOR PASTOR
Let me tell you what I believe. I believe the best life is one
that’s got meaning. I believe that God has given every person an
extraordinary purpose.
As a pastor of an active church, I get energy out of helping people
connect with God, with one another, and with their life’s purpose.
I invite you to connect with Galilee and to connect with me. Hit me
on social media (facebook.com/jason.duley.944) or simply pick up
the phone and call.
[email protected]

REV. MAT THEW SERGENT - ASSOCIATE PASTOR
My call to ministry had to wait as I spent twenty years in law enforce-
ment, rising to Police Captain. I found myself reaching out to victims,
trying to help them make sense out of horrible situations. In essence,
I was being the hands and feet of Christ even in my role as a police
officer. I also saw the results, in many offenders, of living a life outside
the love of God. There were times when I was reaching out to minister
to them as well.
I am grateful now to be working as a pastor at Galilee and the Chapel
at Lansdowne Woods. I believe my greatest usefulness as a minister is
my witness and love for the Good News of the Gospel.
[email protected]

REV. GEITRA MICKELSON - ASSOCIATE PASTOR
Geitra Mickelson, Galilee’s newest addition to our clergy staff, is an
Ohio native who comes to our church with a background in music,
education, and theater. Active in church throughout her life, Geitra
responded to the call to ministry here in Virginia, where she has
lived since 2001.
“I responded to a call when God’s love convicted my heart. I’m
eager to share that love with a hurt and broken world. Jesus has
made all the difference in my life, and I believe he can make a
difference in yours—no matter what!”
“My goal is to work alongside others who are passionately committed to helping those in
need.”
Geitra serves in Galilee’s ministries and at the Chapel at Lansdowne Woods, and is
pursuing the completion of her Masters of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary.
