GALILEE CHURCH

Welcome

At Galilee, we believe that we are ordinary people called to an extraordinary purpose:
to know Christ and to make Him known. We got our start in 1959, when the residents of
Broad Run Farms dreamed of creating their own church. Worship began in our original
building in 1965.
Sunday morning services are at 9 and 11. We incorporate a variety of music into our
worship and would love for you to join us. We’d especially like to see you at our Grow
Hour of small groups between services, starting at 10:15am.
We’re more than a church. We’re also a preschool, a community center that houses
recovery and support programs, a headquarters for scout groups, and a busy gym full of
individual and team sports competitions and practices.
Welcome to Galilee…we hope you make this your church home.

“Pictures”
Remember the good old days, when this question would make
no sense: “How many pictures do you have on your phone?”
You’d have to think of the wall in your home where the
AT&T phone was installed and wonder if there were any
logos or symbols on it. Certainly there were no photographs.
Then along came the cell phone. Suddenly everyone was
carrying not just a phone, but a computer, encyclopedia,
note-taker, recipe-holder…and camera.
If you’re like me you have a lot of pictures on your phone now. I’m not alone. My daughter
admitted that she has more than 4000 pics on her phone! Wow, I have about 100.
Since the phone became a camera, I’ve become a frequent photographer. I even look for
photo opportunities. Some of these pics I will post on social media. I never used to do
this, but it’s become part of my life. And that makes me wonder about a few things.
What am I looking for? On the ordinary day, I’m searching for something remarkable—
something memorable, something sharable. I know it when I see it. And when I see it, I
snap a picture.
Why do I take so many pics? To celebrate life! To hold on to the miracle of the everyday.
Jesus said, “If your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light.” (Matt. 6:22)
Cameras work by light, capturing the image the lens is focused on. Our minds also work
by a sort of light, taking in that part of the world that we focus on.
On my days off, I focus on the outdoors. I will venture up some high peak and be over-
awed with the spectacle that is shown to me. Snap, snap, snap. Click, click, click. When I
return home with pictures to show the family. I have to say that my show and tell is not
always received by a grateful audience. “Wow, Dad, a rock. Another rock. A tree, another
tree. That’s boring.”
Maybe a picture can’t capture everything.
But we all try! Memorial Day weekend, my oldest daughter camped on Skyline Drive with
a friend. She later dropped by to—wait for it—show me pics of the hike: rocks, another
rock, trees, oh look a waterfall.
We snap pictures to celebrate life and to share our lives with one another. And you know
something? None of my best pics are of rocks. All of my best photos are of people: family
and friends. We share our pictures on social media and even on that old-fashioned platform
of real life because we’ve been created as relational beings. We value one another.
You don’t need a camera or a phone with a hundred pictures on it, you don’t even need
good eyes, to sense the light of God in your life. Focusing on healthy relationships—with
people and with God—is what fills our life with light.

Children’s Ministry

Imagine if the heart of the family and the light of the church partnered together. Our
potential to influence a child would increase significantly. This is the mission of the
ThinkOrange Curriculum, which we use every week during Children’s Church at 9:00 and
11:00.

The theme for summer is “Kids Rock!” Throughout July, our children will be introduced
to people in the Bible who did amazing things while they were still kids. They rocked
because they did what God wanted them to do, and our kids can do that, too!

Our Bible verse for July is:

“God made us to do good works!”

-Ephesians 2:10

Sunday School

10:15am - 10:55am · Children’s Wing
Ages: K - 5th grade

10:15am — 10:55am Discipleship Hour:
Location: Every Sunday at 10:15
Ages: Middle & High School

We’ll be studying the biblical concept of hope. Don’t miss it!

Youth Center

Loudoun Interfaith Relief celebrated its 25th year with a name change. Now
known as Loudoun Hunger Relief (LHR), it seeks an increased focus on fresh,
nutritious foods. Out of the 1.2 million pounds of food provided last year, just
6% was fresh food. If LHR can increase its percentage of fresh food, it will
increase the health and wellness of our community.
Please bring in all donations of fresh food on the LAST Sunday of each month.

Apples Garlic Beets Oranges

Carrots Plantains Ginger root

Potatoes Lemons/Limes Onions

Peppers Turnips Yucca

Please feel free to continue to donate throughout the month shelf-stable items
such as rice, beans, cereal, flour, sugar, peanut butter, jelly/jam and canned
meats.

On behalf of LHR, and the Galilee LHR volunteers, thank you for supporting the
least among us. God Bless You.

Project Revamp

Exciting changes lie ahead for Galilee kids and small groups. School is out and Galilee
Trustees are working to renovate and re-launch the valuable classroom spaces in our
church. Follow our journey as we grow for God’s glory!

How can you help?
By donating classroom fixtures and furniture! We’ve established a registry that shows
the exact items that we need to outfit our new spaces. There are desks, shelves, rugs, and
more. Visit our Project Revamp Registry: www.myregistry.com/organization/James-Cox-
Sterling-Va/1376969
You can also donate online at galileeumc.org/give. Funds will be used to purchase items
on our registry and to buy supplies for renovation.
What’s the plan?
Each room has a different purpose, and so the revamp project will be tailored to each
space.
Nursery – on Sundays, a comfortable space for children aged two and younger. During
the week, Galilee Christian School will use this area as a large capacity room for two and
three year olds.
Nursery Side Room – a nursing mothers’ room with gliders, privacy screens, and a
changing table.
Room 200 – for Sunday and midweek small groups. Galilee Christian School’s
after-school program will use this room for tutoring and homework assistance.
Room 202 – a toddler classroom, allowing future growth for Galilee Christian School.
During the week, a location for small groups.
Room 203 – remodeled for Children’s Ministry CLUB 345 Large Group and as a kid-
friendly fellowship space. The after-school program will utilize the room during the
week.
Room 304 – new “Volunteer Oasis.” A welcoming room for fellowship among Children’s
Ministry volunteers. Used during the week by Galilee Christian School teachers and small
groups.

Sundays: Friends in Faith

Studying: The God Who is There
It can no longer be assumed that most people or even most Christians
have a basic understanding of the Bible. Many don’t know the difference
between the Old and New Testament, and even well-known biblical figures
are often misunderstood.
In this basic introduction to faith, D. A. Carson takes seekers, new Christians, and small
groups through the big story of Scripture. He helps readers to discover what they believe
and why they believe it.

Movie: “Do You Believe?” (Rated PG-13).
A dozen different souls-all moving in different directions, all longing for something
more. As their lives unexpectedly intersect, they each are about to discover there is
power in the Cross of Christ ... even if they don’t believe it...yet. When a local pastor is
shaken to the core by the visible faith of an old street-corner preacher, he is reminded
that true belief always requires action. His response ignites a faith-fueled journey that
powerfully impacts everyone it touches in ways that only God could orchestrate.

All are welcome and bring a friend.

Meet the Pastors

REV. JASON DULEY - SENIOR PASTOR
Why am I a pastor? For me, it’s a personal sense of gratitude. God
has given me life and everything else, too. In return, I am offering
my life in service to God and to people. Religion frequently focuses
on rituals and traditions, rather than working to help serve people
in everyday circumstances. Religions can tend toward externals—
rubbing sacred stones, bathing in sacred waters, striding up sacred
stairs. I say, stop. Just stop. Let me spend my time serving the needs
of the hungry, the hurting; teaching the Bible and befriending the
spiritually homeless.
Enough about me. Come to Galilee, named after the place where
Jesus made his home, and where he said: “I have not come to be
served, but to serve…”
[email protected]

REV. MAT THEW SERGENT - ASSOCIATE PASTOR
I am grateful to be working as a pastor at Galilee and the Chapel
at Lansdowne Woods. I remember in my youth “sitting at the feet
of my elders,” listening to the great stories of the faith. My sense
of God’s call began when I was fifteen years old, but during
college I dismissed the idea of becoming a pastor. I entered law
enforcement, eventually becoming a captain in the Falls Church
City Police Department. My sense of calling diminished for a time,
but it never went away. Over time it began to reveal itself again.
When the opportunity came to be the associate pastor of Galilee
and the pastor of the Older Adult Ministries program, I happily
agreed and answered God’s call to ministry. I did not think it would
be easy leaving law enforcement after twenty years, but I must say
I could not be happier in my decision! God is so good in so many
ways!
I believe my greatest usefulness as a minister is my witness and
love for the Good News of the Gospel. I love to tell the story of
Christ’s love for us all, just as my elders told me the stories when I
was young.
