Welcome

When Jesus said, “Follow me,” he initiated his church into a life of service. We believe that
loving others is part of the abundant life promised in the Bible. That’s why you’ll find
opportunities to serve in the community, in the region, and abroad at Galilee. Take a look
at pages of this bulletin—there’s something for you here.
We also believe that Jesus guides us on this path—we’re not alone. Knowing Christ
means growing in faith, knowledge, and love among a small group of searchers. In
September, the 10:15 Grow Hour returns with a bang. You’ll find new Grow Groups and
old favorites meeting every week to nurture you in the life of Christ.
If you have any questions, pop into the office, call us at 703.430.2203, or email us at
[email protected]. You’re welcome at Galilee.

Small Groups

Sundays: Friends in Faith BEGINS SEPT. 9.

10:15am · Adult Flex
Led by Bill Johnson

New study for the “Friends in Faith” Class this fall
We will begin the fall term with an in-depth study of The Parables
of Jesus. Each of the six sessions will include a video presentation
by a theology professor from one of several different seminaries,
followed by a class discussion. Jesus’ parables provided a means
for explaining complex spiritual knowledge through stories familiar
to His listeners in order to make the inherent truth understandable
to them. Seeing that these truths are still relevant to today’s society will be one of the
goals of the study.

At Galilee Church, we offer regular, intentional opportunities for people to grow in faith.
We strive to prepare people of all ages for a deeper relationship with God. Our greatest
tool for growth is the small group, where people come together to study the word and
build understanding, faith, and strong relationships. Our small groups are open to
everyone at any time. Feel free to drop in when you are able to see if a group is the right
fit for you.

WHAT DO STEPHEN MINISTERS DO?

Ever Thought about Becoming a Stephen Minister?

Galilee will be training another class of Stephen Ministers beginning in January. Stephen
Ministers work alongside our pastors to care, encourage, and provide emotional and
spiritual support to people who are going through a difficult time, such as divorce, grief,
hospitalization, unemployment, terminal illness, relocation, chronic illness, or loneliness.
If you have gifts for caring, encouragement, and listening, please begin to prayerfully
consider whether you might want to be part of this exciting ministry. If you think you
might be interested, talk with one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders: Ann Kuo, Marcia Martin,
Tammy Mitchell or Mickie Stalcup. You can also email: [email protected]

Do It All in Jesus’ Name

Stephen Ministers bring distinctively Christian care to those in need. They use both
words and deeds to express Christ’s care for others—listening and comforting, calling on
the training they have received and employing the tools of faith. If this job description
fits your personal goals for ministry, consider becoming a Stephen Minister. A training
class is starting in January. For more information, contact the church office, 703-430-
2203 or email: [email protected].

Next Level Innovations

September always brings a resurgence of activity and the feel of a ‘new year’, and
evidence of all the NLI work that has been going on will become more evident as
we move into the busy fall season.
Here are some highlights of NLI efforts and accomplishments –
• Staff members have spent considerable time with their counterparts at our mentor
church, nearby Floris UMC, which is a large and vibrant congregation. Staffing, worship
planning, youth ministry, Serve and audio/visual leaders from both churches have met
with one another to share ideas, successes, and more, and Pastor Jason continues to meet
regularly with Tom Berlin, Sr. Pastor at FUMC, to discuss many elements of church growth
and management.
• In response to the NLI report, there has been significant transition towards
differentiating our two Sunday morning services, specifically towards making the 11AM
worship service the highly traditional – hymns from only the hardback hymnal will
be featured, there will be more organ music, and other worship elements, such as the
Apostle’s Creed. GPP (Praise Music) will only perform at 9AM services.
• GROW groups will begin again in September and there are plans in the works for a
Grow Fair later this Fall, which will be designed to help congregants choose where and
how they might like to participate in this popular feature of Sunday morning worship.
• Backpack Buddies is ramping up activity to meet the needs of the school children we
serve, and your support is always welcome and needed.
• Clearly one of the most visible evidence of NLI accomplishments is through the
Trustees’ building care and maintenance, which this summer has included roof
replacement and other less noticeable, but equally important, updates and changes.
They continue to work on future building needs and will have more news to share with
us later this fall.
We will hold another Town Hall later this autumn to share all the accomplishments and
movement towards NLI goals and objectives – look for a date to be announced later this
month.
Please continue to pray for the work of NLI and all the folks involved who are giving
of their time and talent to take Galilee UMC from ‘good to great’ and continue our
mission to know Christ and to make Christ known to others. As always, your feedback,
comments, volunteer interests and questions are welcome – reach out to me any time at
[email protected].

Meet the Pastors

REV. JASON DULEY - SENIOR PASTOR
Let me tell you what I believe. I believe the best life is one
that’s got meaning. I believe that God has given every person
an extraordinary purpose.
As a pastor of an active church, I get energy out of helping
people connect with God, with one another, and with their
life’s purpose.
I invite you to connect with Galilee and to connect with me. Hit me on social media
(facebook.com/jason.duley.944) or simply pick up the phone and call.

REV. GEITRA MICKELSON - ASSOCIATE PASTOR
Geitra Mickelson, Galilee’s newest addition to our clergy staff, is an
Ohio native who comes to our church with a background in music,
education, and theater. Active in church throughout her life, Geitra
responded to the call to ministry here in Virginia, where she has
lived since 2001.
“I responded to a call when God’s love convicted my heart. I’m
eager to share that love with a hurt and broken world. Jesus has
made all the difference in my life, and I believe he can make a
difference in yours—no matter what!”
“My goal is to work alongside others who are passionately committed to helping those in
need.”
Geitra serves in Galilee’s ministries and at the Chapel at Lansdowne Woods, and is
pursuing the completion of her Masters of Divinity at Wesley Theological Seminary.
